The UK Top 40

Back when music was music and not painful noise with angry lyrics filled with effin and jeffin. I listened to the top 40 every Sunday on Radio 1. I haven’t done this for a good couple of decades now as I feel the music has moved on to something that’s not my taste.

Only yesterday a car past me with all windows open and what I can only describe as modern rap music, again lots of swearing and even the N word coming out the speakers a lot.

So i’m thinking I’m way off of touch when it comes to the music of today, my spotify playlist consists of over 400 songs mainly from the 80s, there’s a few classics from the 60s, 70s, 90s and the few that have been noticed in the new millennium.

Harry Styles, I know of him cause social and mainstream media have put him out there, and he seems to be quite popular from what’s been said to me, but i wouldn’t know one of his song if it was played to me.

This weekend I’m going to listen to the current UK top 40 and see if I recognise and even like what’s being put out there today.

Has your music taste changed with the times or are you like me, prefer the music of your younger years?

I couldn't tell you a single song that's in the charts and that's been the case for about 20 years now.

I seem to recall that the chart rundown or top 40 is now on a Thursday, but could be wrong..

I used to listen to Radio 2 when at work, but decided to start listening to Spotify, Jeremy Vine used to always get my back up.

Harry Styles is fantastic, I saw him live this week. His songs are good and his stage presence is like a mixture of Bowie and Jagger.

There’s plenty of good modern music just as there is plenty that is not to my taste but that is subjective.

Everyone thinks that the music from their era is the best but what we all tend to forget is that back then there was what we thought was good music and what we thought was bad music, just like now.

I still listen to 90s hip hop when the moods hits me but I kind of moved over to Dancehall and that has stuck with me so mostly listen to that, old and new.

I often listen to new music from UK rap/grime but Dancehall is my go to

was great when wogan done the breakfast show, Radio 1 back in the 90s was also really good.

Since being a teen, I've found my music style away from the top 40, generally.

There have been some I've picked up on through radio play.

I still listen to up to date bands as well as others going back to to 60's.

There is so much good music out there have haven't had the radio play or the push to get them known.

Yeah, of course it's changed, so have I . I'm older now Once thursday TOTP and sunday top 40 was everything

A lot happened since then, mp3 napster and now very few people actually buy physical copies of music. Thanks to our super always on fast internet connection , I can listen to any and everything.

The only BBC stations I'll listen to now are Six and Four.

Record shops are going the way of milliners and barrel makers.

My musical tastes have always been varied. I’ve just opened my ears to more genre’s as I’ve gotten older.

The only difference is these days I couldn’t give you a list of current artists that fill the top ten, as I don’t pay attention to the chart. If I hear a song and I like it I add it to my Spotify.

On Mixcloud there’s loads of old 80’s radio shows including the old Radio 1 top 40 countdowns that people recorded back in the day and have downloaded for you to listen again to.

As it’s Summer I listened to an old Radio One Roadshow t’other day. Took me back, like.

For every 80s banger we remember and still hear there’s loads of ansolute tosh from that era we’ve forgotten though

I agree with you though, music today .. generally meh.

Nope born in the 80s, listened to it growing up with my dad, then met my current husband who is an 80s fan too. I dip into the 90s music but it's mostly 80s in our home, car etc.

Totally respect all others decades and genres, as all music has it's attraction to me, but 80s is my favourite.

My music tastes abruptly ceased sometime in the early 2000s. My favourite eras are the 50s and 60s though. I can sing most things from the late 50s and through the 60s. I do also like a lot of 70s stuff, less 80s (heavy metal, mainly) and selected 90s and 00s.

Vinyl sales have increased but it only ever be a niche interest. It's bothersome to do right. Deck, needle, pre-amp, amp speakers and fragile media. I won't dispute the SQ is better but maybe not best.

I listen to a lot of 90s and early 2000s stuff but there’s still plenty of good music being made. The top 40 isn’t the best place to find it.

Afraid I am still living in the 60s and 70s

with the Pirate Radio Stations, the arrival of Radio 1,and the start of the Prog Rock era.

In car entertainment was 8 track cartridge player

I too have given up on Radio 2 with the exception of Sounds of the 60s on Saturday mornings and Sounds of the 70s on Sunday afternoons courtesy of Tony Blackburn and Johnnie Walker respectively.

I get what you mean, listening to the same music can turn you off it, specially one song being constantly played will do that, our local radio station does it, if it finds a song is popular, it will get played 4 or 5 times through the working day, you soon switch off from it cause it’s been over played, as well as the usual 80s pop i do have a lot of obscure one offs i’ve picked up along the way.

I listen to music from loads of different times. Some from when most of the forums think that music was at its peak. Some from my own youth. Some stuff that’s just been released.

I’m especially a fan of rap though and think it can tell such beautiful stories

There are some great india and alternative bands on Radio 1 at the minute that I love. Wet Leg, Self Esteem and Nova Twins are really good.

Of course there's a lot of pop and grime has become mainstream too but there are some great artists with songs I can definitely appreciate. Try to keep an open mind OP

This guy is incredibly talented and very entertaining and I find it hard to believe that anyone growing up in the 80's/90's wouldn't enjoy his music, even his rap songs . . .

He has a massive following on YouTube and what I really like about him is that he encourages other young artists and offers them a platform on which to promote themselves.
