Aldi self service

Popped into our local store yesterday, 2 of the 6 tills removed and 8 self serve checkouts in place. The 4 traditional tills were rammed and the self service empty as who wants to really put a big shop through and try to balance everything on a scale the size of a tea towel?

Progress or madness? It's the first time we have seen them in either of the budget supermarkets.

Probably not installed for those with a giant trolley full. More aimed at the folk with a few things in their hands, or a small basket full?

I don’t mind them either way. Will use them if they’re free and I’m in a hurry. I’ll use the manned tills if I’m more leisurely paced.

I used to think like this, then I thought. "who WANTS to be stuck on a till all day?" If they have to work in a supermarket there are lots of different roles.

I used to think like this, then I thought. "who WANTS to be stuck on a till all day?" If they have to work in a supermarket there are lots of different roles."

For some with mobility issues, sitting on a till is perfect employment.

I don't use a bus , and yes I fill my own fuel when in the UK. In Spain someone does it for me as they like to create employment not remove it

And then complain about unemployment.

I think the logic is that if we insist on not using the self checkout and choose the manned tills, the option of having no option in the future is less likely

I was in a boots store recently and stood in a queue only to be told it was for returns only, everything went through the self service till. I said I wanted to use a "real" till but they didn't have any. The member of staff kindly helped me but when it came to paying and I pulled out cash it was "oh...we are card only". Had to buy what I wanted elsewhere. Not sure if this is a trial but I voted with my feet.

Exactly .

I find there's more of this happening in the UK than I see in Europe.

The UK seems hellbent on reducing staff as much as they can and then wonder why we have an unemployment problem.

I'd rather wait a few minutes in a queue for a staffed till than use the self service checkouts. And I tell the person in the store my reason for doing it when they tell me every 5 minutes there's a self service checkout free.

Every little helps.

No supermarket chain is struggling financially and it isn't done for the customers benefit it's done purely to maximise the already high profits.

Only one winner and a lot of losers

If that was supposed to be a comparison it failed drastically.

There will always be a mail service.

Keep using self service checkouts I can guarantee that eventually there won't be a manned checkout.

It's already heading that way with a few stores popping up that have zero staff in them.

If everything eventually becomes self service and cashless who do you think

A) it benefits the most?

B ) it effects the most?

The Lidl in central Maidstone relocated recently. Before they moved I was told by the one assistant looking after eight self-service tills that the new place won't have any self-service because too much shop lifting was taking place...

With cost of living going up, I don't blame a little light fingering at the tills...

I’ve worked in tesco and Morrisons on the checkouts and honestly the staff don’t give a flying which till you use, the managers will simply shove staff in another area if there isn’t enough work on the till and tbh being moved to another area to work was better then being locked in a box you can’t leave, even to pee, without permission. Which can feel damn degrading

Use the self scans or the ‘real’ till on your own comfort level, it honestly makes zero difference to staff, we’re there either way for the same amount of time and wage

Totally agree with this. Very often at Aldi get stuck behind one of our more life experience patrons at the till and never get flustered if they have a good natter. In fact quite often offer to help pack, carry the bags to the car or even offer them a lift if they look like they are going to struggle. Always take the time to have a good chat, most seem to be widowed and with kids who call far too infrequently. It's nice to be nice.

I always use the manned tills. When a friendly member of staff tells me there is space at the self service tills I softy say “it’s ok, I don’t work here” and smile

Been in quite a few with a mix of both- excellent in the morning or lunchtime, when you just have a sandwich and banana to pay for, but barbara, who has all day free has decided to shop for the entire month in the middle of the busiest times of the day- and you can guarantee she'll have 15 coupons to go through but can't find her bloody purse in the cavernous handbag that she could have fished out while she was queueing

(as you can tell- i was stuck behind her on my way to work this week...no self service checkouts in that branch and only one belt open )

It's starting to reverse a little thank goodness as many, including myself, going back to cash. In a survey the difference between us and other European countries is staggering. We had gone down to only 18% cash transactions though now its back to about 28%. Rest of Europe has been around 50%. Use or lose it. Everything I can pay in cash now I do and hope others will do too.

I don't see the argument that they cost jobs, the terminals need to be manufactured, installed, serviced and have a lot of IT infrastructure behind them to keep them running. All of that provides jobs, probably more jobs than they cost through replacing cashiers, better paid jobs I would imagine too.

Supermarkets also have the boom in home deliveries, especially since covid so that provides lots of extra jobs of different skill levels that didn't exist a few years ago.

As for using them I prefer them if I just have a couple of items, but if I am doing a full shop then it's the old school checkout.

Morrison have the best self checkouts. Apart from the small baskets ones there are four long conveyor belt ones like the staff on checkouts with ample room to put your stuff

Haha how do you work out which side is the "bagging area"? I always get it wrong... Some are L to R, others the opposite... Then for no reason the Bagging Area has a tantrum and red lights a blaring... And nobody comes to the rescue... So I gather my stuff up and fuck up another SS till...

Having no self service tills is one of the main reasons I went to ALDI. Unfortunately if they're available and are quicker (because of less manned tills)people inevitably will use them.

I'll just now go back to whatever supermarket is on my route than making a point of going to aldi

A thought struck me the other day. Haven't been to a supermarket (or any shop for that matter) since 2020.

Everything is ordered online and delivered to the door.

On that basis, is there a need for supermarkets anymore ? Mine is just functioning (for me at least) as a giant fridge and warehouse that I order from.

I think the era of giant supermarkets is going to come to an end. Sure, there will be smaller "convenience" stores for milk, bread and eggs perhaps.

.

But I cannot see how sustainable it can continue to be to build, staff and run a massive warehouse anymore.

My brother finished working at Aldi going on for 2 years ago now, well before self service in their stores. He spent have his shift or sometimes more, dealing with shoplifters and calling the police etc. The thefts are independent of the self service tills.

In the Netherlands, the Albert Heijn supermarket had barriers around the self serve area. You had to scan your receipt from the self serve checkout to be released. Good idea.

I love the self serve tills. They've had them in our aldi for ages and I refuse to use the manned tills now. The queues are shorter and I don't get my shopping thrown at me. I use the self service in most places now as I find them quicker and more convenient.

We had self serve tills at the local Lidl I like to go to but was removed as cunts round here will steal owt not fastened down.much Prefer the self serve as can go at own pace they practically launch the bait at you on the operator till I just throw it back in the basket then pack at own pace by the self

This morning went to my local Asda superstore, this at seven am when they opened. . They have now reduced staffed tills to five. When first opened approx twenty staffed tills. There are now basket tills( max I think 10 items) trolley tills and scanned tills. I was lucky as there was someone on a staffed till this morning. So used this. On way out had to go past other tills. There must have been about twenty people using basket and trolley tills. Over half of them were waiting for help as there was either a red or amber light on . One female was walking out and leaving her shopping behind. She said to a member of staff that could not wait any longer to have problem sorted at till. Is this progress ?

You can't use a trolley at my local Lidl, it's basket only. Much as though I don't like the idea of self service tills simply because of the jobs issue I used to find Aldi particularly frustrating standing for ages behind people with a week's worth of shopping when I only had a couple of beers to pay for. The self service is so much quicker.

I rather use tesco as they have same prices and I don't like to be rushed, I use send service and don't queue more than seconds
