So tomorrow the old rivalries start what’s everyone’s opinions on how it will go ? Obviously I would love to see England win the series but we are highly dependent on Jimmy Anderson at 40 to keep fit Moeene Ali is another anomaly his last match v Oz at Edgbaston he got destroyed and no way is Stokes fit I just hope our top order batsman don’t do the recent collapse My prediction Oz to win 3-1 with one match abandoned due to rain

I think we’ll be ok. I have a good feeling about Moeen. It’ll take a great batting effort as well but I’m positive. Excited to tune in.

I agree on the likely scoreline OP, especially after seeing what the Aussies did to India, I can't see England winning. It'll be close though; the series score might not reflect the matches.

I think on English wickets with our style of play that we will do alright.

Also, growing up as a spin bowler in village cricket, can I highlight the absolute disrespect the English have for them? Their frontline spinner is injured so they bring someone out of retirement who was primarily a batsman who did part time off spin. Is there really that dearth of quality that no one else could be given a chance?

England have had loads of good spinners over the years and there are a couple of decent ones out there.

It's just that Bazball dictates that you pack your side full of batsmen that can do other things and Moeen is the obvious choice for that. Why else is Bairstow in there as keeper? He's not there as number one choice in that position.

The spinner problem is that as promising a talent the young chaps are. An Ashes series can trash an inexperienced spinners mentality and confidence for the rest of his career. The Aussie top order smash him out of all parts of the ground. Moeen is a smart choice, he won’t mind one way or the other because he’ll disappear back into retirement as soon as the series has ended.

I’m torn on the series scoreline. On one hand I’d love an exciting 3-2 or 3-1 win. On the other, I fear that Baz Ball will see us skittled many times, and that the Aussie top 4 score really heavily.

To be fair, I think they'd be struggling to fill the overs as their attack is looking like an ageing (albeit quality) Broad and Anderson, Ollie Robinson, Moeen, and an unfit Ben Stokes. It's a lot of heavy lifting by Moeen needed to keep it ticking over and hoping the others can find wickets in their short bursts.

I get what you mean, but is it much of a good look bringing a part time spinner out of retirement if others are performing at county level? It happens a lot at grass roots too where younger spinners are taken off if they give away a 4 or 6 ball for a couple of overs which craps on their confidence even more.

It will potentially be a tight series. They key is the batting from England vs the Aussie attack. If they can score runs then England will win. However the selection of Ali is not the best imo. Never been that great and especially vs Australia. It was a time to bring in another spinner. Sends the wrong message. I also wouldn’t have left Wood out of this test. His raw pace is needed especially with the forecast.

However really looking forward to the start. I reckon 3-2 England.

I was SO looking forward to this a few months ago, mostly because I thought with Wood and Archer back we finally had some quicks who could match fire for fire when it comes to the Australian pace attack.

Now both are injured, Stokes can't bowl and can barely bat or field, our leading attack is 76 years old, we've dropped the best England wicket-keeper in a generation, and we have a retired spinner. It's an appalling prospect.

Wood isn’t injured, they haven’t picked him for this test. Stokes will bowl, the injury to Leach is unfortunate but who else would you pick to replace him? I agree with you about Foakes though, always play your best keeper.

As others have said Aussies battering India is different to the Ashes. I think (hope) that they may be overfaced with some of our batting but also know that they will come out hard with the ball and I can see a couple of tests being very one sided in each direction with a more balanced outcome in the others.

It's true his knee has been dodgy for a while, but I'd take him on one leg. What he brings to the team and the group at large is so much more than the runs & wickets, it's about his leadership and the tone he sets. I'm old enough to remember when Mike Brearley was captain, not that great as a player but his leadership was superb. The fact he could get the most out of the likes of Botham meant he was worth his place, even if he never scored a run

Cant see us taking 20 wickets but you never know... English conditions... I suspect the hot summer hard pitches will suit the aussie bowlers more than us. Depends how broad goes really. When hes hot hes hot. And him and warner have a cracking rivalry.

So... Depends on the toss really. No drawers unless weather intervenes. Think we have a good record at edgbaston dont we? So 4 1 aussies.

I think his random field placements are wayyyyy better than joe roots 9 2 fiels bowl short and wide tactics. Why anyone wants to remove 2 ways of getting a batsman out all innings is beyond me.

I used to think that too then went to a match, such a diverse crowd, supporters from both sides sitting together laughing joking and drinking, one eye on the cricket the other talking to people you have never met.

I used to go to football a lot and cannot remember befriending anyone

Honestly can't see the appeal.

I think I'd rather know what the Beckhams were doing.

I never went to a public school (though did go to a prep school) but I love cricket because my Nan, from Jamaica, got me into playing it at a young age!

Funny because I went to public and it was only for private school boys if they seriously wanted to get into it. But I grew up watching it with my Dad and I'm Indian so of course I was going to be into cricket "

Absolutely and it's infectious! I was too young to see a lot of things in sport but watching the fearsome foursome of Holiding, Roberts, Marshall and Garner is one of the things I would've loved to have seen live.

Hoping for clouds today, don't think the wicket is going to help us out. The worry for me is our pace attack, without swing and movement, is a little one dimensional.

New thing learnt for me today, if the fielder fields and throws the ball and it hits the wicket and bails come off, if the batsman is in they batting side get another run.

Regardless of how many runs he gets, if aussies win, many will say its because we didn't play our best wicket keeper.

The missed stumping alone cost 38 runs.

The problem is if you play Foakes, someone has to make way and Johnny's runs are a necessity.
