Little Question - Huge Gap in Knowledge ...

I have a friend going into hospital next week who is having a tumour zapped with 252 rays of radiotherapy called Gamma Knife Surgery ....... I understand everything that is going to happen but what I dont understand is ...... how can you have that amount of zapping (and I am assuming its like intense lasering) without feeling it as I would imagine it would be like burning the tumour ........ anybody have an opinion on this or any other radiotherapy? ........ why is there not a serious confused smiley?

Not everything in your body has pain receptors. For example, most brain surgery is done while you're awake so they can make sure they don't hit anything important.

My understanding is that the 'beams' all come from different directions, so most of your body gets exposed to tiny, harmless doses, but the beams all intersect at a point inside the tumour, where the dose is massive. Presumably you won't have any nerves inside a tumour so no, you wouldn't feel it.

ok that makes sense and I think I had forgotten that tumours dont have nerves d'oh but then probably tooo wrapped up in the whole process probably

Radiotherapy is pretty brutal, for instance if you get it on your cheek you can have burns on the back of your neck as it just blasts through your whole head. (yes your brain melts a bit)

It's very invasive and very painful.

It doesnt go anywhere and it doesnt shrink either ........ the zapping is done hopefully to stop it growing ... and that will be seen over a 3 year period ......... if it carries on growing after the 3 years then its surgery ............ some get a second dose of zapping but thats normally for the older generation as no one knows the impact of lots of zapping ... and thank u about the bemused smiley xx

Not Gammma knife surgery "

Gamma Knife surgery isnt because it is within 0.01 mm precise .......... its fascinating to see how they build the programme of treatment and zapping to each individual tumour

would you like to back this up with some evidence?

Family member has just had 5 weeks radiotherapy and the most traumatic part was the travelling.
