Is the forum getting boring?

Does it lack the fun the Covid times brought?

Is it because certain fabbers aren't in them anymore?

For those of you that have been around for years when were the best times and more importantly why?

I know a few years back there seemed to be more in depth discussions on things and that seems to have disappeared completely in my time on fab.

Or maybe it's just me and I'm not so interested.

I think the problem lies with us.

If we have been here awhile then we have probably seen it and read it all before, often more than once.

There ARE less deep and meaningful threads but I don’t think the forum has many willing to contribute to deep and meaningful like it did back then (I don’t mean that in a mean way). These days folk seem to like to keep things light.

There is less angst though, I think, so that’s a plus.

The forum photo challenges used to be epic I’ve only been here a couple of years so can’t comment on how it used to be, but there’s still some lovely people in the forums to chat with.

Does it come around in eras, op, the good times then the less good?

When I have that feeling... I go and do something else. Please note, that's not meant in a rude way but it's like people who say "oh I'm so bored". Go and do something then.

I loved the Covid era on the fora - I think in part that's down to the general zeitgeist - more randomness, more support, more creativeness.

I don't think the forum is getting boring. I also don't think there are halcyon days. At all. I've been around for ermm... well some time now.

There have been plenty of more in depth conversations since your time on Fab - maybe that's confirmation bias on your part because you're yearning for the years before? I do wish more people would start them though - there seems to be a trend currently towards the more banal, daft topics. Easy chewing gum for the mind. I miss having proper discussions without people taking it as a slight, resorting to name calling etc.

I do think it's in a bit of a trough but it's very cyclic so it happens.

And because it's important to say this - none of this is a dig at you. I've read many threads like this over the years.

If you want it to change - be part of that change.

Covid was alright but the peak for me was last year. Great people that are on the site but can’t post anymore. Great threads and engagement.

I don’t think the forums are boring now I just think that there are different posters at different points that aren’t going to be for everyone. But if people don’t like it they can post more fun things themselvesg.

There seems to be lots of lovely people though and some regulars who are gems.

I’ve only noticed sone unpleasantness here and there and I think that makes people wary maybe.

I enjoyed the covid period it was certainly a lot more lively, people are back to work and reality again now so it's dwindling a little.

I have days I love the forums and days I'm just like.....boring and CBA.

No seriously, you raise a few different points. First things here ebb and flow. As a friend of mine says 'nothing gold can stay'

Covid time was a one in a lifetime experience, showed us the best and worst of people. We're going through an adjustment period now to find a new normal. To use the cliche, you do get it all here, from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Keep your gratitude higher than your expectations and be certain that everything changes, including people.

I like the thinking/ discussion threads. Throwing some different ideas into the mix, make people think differently.

I miss those but there doesn't seem to be many people who want that anymore.

I haven’t been around long enough, maybe a year so I wouldn’t know the difference. Some days are a lot more quiet than others. There are a fair few threads discussing the same topic just worded differently but that’s to be expected really, there’s only so much new topics you can start.

I get days when I think the same as you OP, then there's days I'm constantly laughing like yesterday with those brave forumites putting up them statuses, It was so funny.

I think that there needs to be more people taking the plunge and starting the threads that they want to see on the forums instead of getting bored with the content that's already here. I can't answer for what it was like before or during covid although I was on fab before then, I'm relatively new to the forums.

Sometimes it does feel like there's only a handful of members that are creative with the forum threads.

Often the replies can be repetitive too, I can predict almost word for word what some people will say, I'm not sure why they repeat themselves.

The constant drivel some start is just annoying, but easily scrolled past.

Variety is great. Deep and meaningful or light hearted (and ideally both together, which I think is when we can often express ourselves best); thoughtful or trivial and flippant, original or repetitive. On the internet, as in life, tolerating others is key. Easy to scroll past if they're not interesting to you, and no need to shut them down publicly if they're trying to say something and buggering it up in tone or content, like we all do too often.

New to the forum myself, though, so am only just getting a feel for the folk and the tone. To the eyes of a newcomer, there seems plenty of thoughtful, friendly discussion in amongst the (mainly very cheerful and also friendly) more superficial chatter. The mix of both is welcome.

I think they are pretty much the same as they have been since I joined a few years ago. I think people tend to see them in the past times with rose tinted glasses. They have always been repetitive and at times quieter than others.

A lot of time the people who say it was more fun back then is because it was the people they liked and interacted with posted more. People move on and new people join in.It is a cycle that keeps happening as far as I can see anyhow.

I think they are the same as they've always been. I've been here almost four years.

I do find myself posting less and logging in less often, but I always go through phases like this, and with it being Summer and more to do it's noticeable on the forums with less people around.

I have noticed some of my fave posters don't pop up as often anymore or are UNLOS which is a bit of a bummer. But that’s not to say the rest of you are boring or disliked, we all add something here and I like what thr majority of people add to this place.

If you don't like the forums, then be part of adding the change you want to see. Or don't log on. And I mean that in general not directed to anyone in particular.

If you really feel like that, then you need to take a holiday from even looking at the forums. I don't deny anybody's right to come in and say whatever they want (within the rules) but going out of your way to take part in something just to declare that you don't find it interesting is... Odd? Worrying?

You wouldn't go along to a football match and shout out that you hated football and you thought that every match was the same. You wouldn't go to an Oasis concert (replace with name of some currently popular band

) just to tell everyone that you thought they were rubbish, that music was boring and repetitive, bring back the Beatles/ Stones/ Hendrix/ Beethoven/ Gregorian chants/ whatever.

I feel that the forums are what they are. They are a product of the people that post on them, shaped by external events, influenced by seasons of the year, even by phases of the moon and tidal changes maybe. Sometimes there may be a dip. Sometimes it may be that world events leave people too emotionally exhausted to sparkle here.

Take a holiday, come back feeling refreshed. If something isn't as you'd like it to be, make your own contributions. Be part of the community, make it your own. It's more fun than being the old guy in the corner of the pub, accosting people and telling them that the beer is rubbish, it's not what it used to be like. If the beer is rubbish here, then try the cider. Or explore other pubs, find one with beer you do like. Don't be the grumpy guy in the corner.

I think that when people talk about the forum being better in the past, it's generally because people that they like were active at that point in time, people who don't post now for whatever reason. The people using a forum make it what it is, and if you're indifferent to or dislike all of the people using it, it's probably not going to be the most enjoyable place to spend time.

With regards to the deeper threads, there was a lot of noise from certain individuals a while back trying to shut them all down as people were "being nasty" and "we should all be nice to each other". It's subjective, I viewed it as debate (albeit heated debate at times). I've always enjoyed that type of thread, and have had some really interesting conversations and learnt new things off of the back of them over the years. I've also received a lot of flak, both on and off of here, for taking part in them if people haven't liked my opinion...I'm positive I'm not the only person to experience that.

I appreciate your views, however I don't need to take a break in the least. It's only perspective after all. But like I say your perspective is a valuable one. If amd when I feel the need fir a break I'll aim and work my way to a ban

What I would be questioning if I were you, is why you did my contribution odd or worrying? As it really is none of your concern what I post, how I post..the only concern you really have is around what you post or how you post. I woundnt watch others...

I think it's doing the new regular posters a disservice to say it's not as good anymore or it used to be better in the past. It was definitely more active when I started posting but that's because it was in lockdown and no one could go anywhere.

With regards to deeper conversations, they still happen but feel like we're in precarious times where a slightly sensitive topic can light the touch paper of opinion from both sides and debate can turn personal really quickly because some people can't express their opinion in any other way.

It's ok though, and still happy to contribute where I'm happy to

I think they are getting a bit boring just lately. There was that 5% a while back of thought provoking stuff made it worth wading through all the rest, but they have either left, stopped posting or post much less frequently now. Your posts are ok though OP & of course the queen is back , so it ain’t all bad

Very much this. It's rather evident isn't it - the same sort of thread that would get derision, be seen as being boring, banal or weird is seen as quirky, cute or interesting if someone likes the poster often enough.

Every forum I've ever been involved in, with a wide range of subjects, has had regular threads about 'it ain't what it used to be'. There's always a grain of truth - people come, people go, there are those who are missed - but usually best to crack on and enjoy the present rather than hanker back to the past.

I've only been using the forum for a couple of years. Probably a bit less than that, so wasn't active during the first lockdown etc, but it's been peaks and troughs even since I have been here. I guess it was ever thus.

I never really like the it's "not like the old days" stuff; I always suspect there's a bit of 'rose tinted glasses' going on. But, even if they were better *for you* (I don't mean you; I mean for *one* but didn't want to sound like a dick), that doesn't necessarily mean they were better full stop. The forum as it is now might be someone else's perfect, if that makes sense.

I agree they can be a bit repetitive (there are only so many times we can talk about cake or whatever), but so be it. I like a balance: I enjoy the thought provoking threads, but also like the balance of the lightweight. I try to go with the flow, knowing that if I don't like something I can just ignore it.

I think the "be the change" point above sums it up; if we don't like threads running, start ones we do. Hell, I might even get round to it one day...

For me they are yes. But I like the thought provoking threads, rather than the flirty threads, most of my friends only occasionally post or they lurk now, so we chat on different platforms, rather than socialise in the forum.

I'll enjoy coming back refreshed after my summer break has finished

I do try and start thought provoking posts but they never seem to gain any popularity. If I’m lucky I get maybe somewhere around 20-40 comments sometimes more but then, which do you prefer, bums or boobs goes into 2-3 threads.

I think while people wish there were more in-depth threads the truth is that they don’t present the opportunity for quick humour and flirting
