Hey all I've gotta go for the camera down my throat in a couple of weeks and now starting to get really nervous about it, obv being swingers me and mr duo have joked about comparing it to deep throating lol but joking aside its starting too get to me now.... I've been told they can offer sedation but I've heard that it doesn't really make much difference what's everyone else's experience of this if they've ever had it before as all I've heard is horror stories and I kinda of cant imagine what it's going to be like really ......... Think what's making it worse is I've gotta stop taking my medication for 2 weeks before the appointment too so all my symptoms of heart burn, acid and sickness are gonna be at an all time high before they start shoving a camera down there too

I've had this (J).

I was under anaesthetic - not sure weather it was local or general but I was awake but sort of drowsy..

You can definetly feel it down your throat , I just remember a lot of gagging and bits of fluid been vomited up..!

Then once I came round all was fine.. You'll be ok

Good luck x

Go for the sedative, you'll barely remember the procedure. I've had a couple and it really helps.

I had the sedation and I think it made little difference, I remember every second of it. But then I know others who can't remember a thing, so I would take it and hope it works for you. It's certainly not the most pleasant experience, but thankfully it doesn't last long. Good luck x

There are two ways to have it done. 1. Local anesthetic spray to back of throat, helps reduce gag reflex. 2. Mild sedation, involving needle in hand snd hsving it injected.

Good luck xx

Thank you everyone I know it's gonna be worth it in the end cos I really can't go on as I am now without it being investigated and sorted ............ill be making sure I ask straight away for the sedation now then and make sure it's taking its full effect before they proceed with doing it...........I. Thinking I'd rather be giving birth than having this done lol x

hope this makes you feel better, i had a camera shoved somewhere worse than my throat! funny thing was that i knew the doctor because her house caught fire a few weeks prior. she allowed me to look at the monitor which was really interesting. it was uncomfortable but not that bad! the worse bit was when the camera went through the valve into the bladder.

good luck.

The first time I had the sedation - it was rohipnol (sp?) or a similar drug and concious during the procedure. You are not allowed to leave for several hours later until effects have worn off. Second time just had a throat mild anaesthetic as didn't want to wait. Not pleasant but was the preferred option on reflection. Easier said than done but being relaxed helps.

Take the sedation, it helps....it isn;t pleasant but from somone with a very high gag reflex, it makes it easier..you are woosy but not out of it and the sedation doesn't carry the same risks as a general

I have to be sedated for anything like that as I have small windpipe so It's a tussle to get anything down. I also have to have why jaw stretched as due to being wired in the past I can't open my mouth very wide.

I had one in Nov 2010.

I won't lie and say it was pleasant or comfortable, as for me it wasn't.

I had a local but could stil feel and had a very sore throat after.

I tried to shut my eyes as seeing it all makes it worse imo.

What got me through was my specialist and his team, the care I received.

It doesn't last that long and worth it, try to think and stay positive.

Good luck.

I had it once sedated(twilight sleep),and once knocked out. Both times they ballooned my esophagus to open it up a bit. DON'T do it without sedation, I don't know of any Doc that would.Takes about 20 mins. and 1/2 hour recovery. Eat some soup,go to bed, you will be fine. Oh yeah, don't be trying to outdo Linda Lovelace.

Not sure you can actually have a general as you need to be awake to swallow but as others have said it's like you are there but not lol

A little sore after but you will be ok hun. Can you take Kalms? Just thought as they are herbal they might relax you. ! Worth checking out xx

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I think whether you have sedation or not, its not going to be pleasant. I had it without and hated every minute of it, but I could get dressed and go straight afterwards instead of having to wait for the sedative to wear off.

I found it OK going down, it was coming back up that was the problem. And the horrible nurse asked why I was crying.

By the way, it's not remotely as painful as childbirth, but it is unpleasant. Take some rescue remedy or something along with you.

There are actually 3 ways to do this, sedative ie knocked out ish, spray to the throat to numb it and last and not to be recommended is have nothing at all.

I have had 2 first nothing and gagged vomited and was terrible, second time was spray, i gagged vomited oh and he burst my osophageos and was rushed to intensive care with facial emphasimea i know the spelling is wrong, but there are big risks invilved with this as i am now aware of.... 9 days in intensive care proves it!

You will be fine, just keep positive and think about how this test will sort out exactly what's wrong and how to treat it. There are far more painful procedures than endoscopy. Go for the local and you'll be ok. Its the thought of it that's offputting. Good luck and take care

Hi

I've had this done both with local and general anaesthetic,

With the local, I remember them talking me though what they were going to do and then when they started to insert the camera but after that I can't remember much it's very hazy. I used to have an awful gag reflex and was positive I would be sick but I wasn't, you will be absolutely fine. I would stick with the local if possible because you will be able to leave quicker.

With the general I didn't have a choice because I had to have a broncoscopy and biopsy which they needed to do while I was "asleep"

Good luck x

Ive had it done about 4 times and each time was with throat spray...I was a bag of nerves before the procedure but the staff were marvellous put me at ease and at each one it went well.

Good luck and try to not worry too much focus on the positive, easy said than done I know.

Who knows

Have tried the throat spray when the doc wanted to investigate a growth on my vocal chords, didnt work and they ended up going up my nose to and down to have a look.

Had an endoscopy and they gave me sedation to make me compliant (thats a first), was awake the whole time and it didnt seem too bad a procedure

Had an endoscopy about 15 years ago. Had the option of no sedation, didn't fancy that, or spray and an injection in my hand, which I opted for. Essentially it numbs the valve in your windpipe. The spray was wierd, as you lose the ability, so it felt to swallow, though not unpleasant and once the sedative had kicked in it was fine. Not unpleasant, the medical staff want you to get through it as easy as possible, although it looked like they were rewiring my house it seemed alot of tubing going in. A little sense of pushing and tugging and it was over. They let you go, once you can drink something. I played football that evening.

Hi, had it done last year with no sedative at all. TBH don't remember them offering me anything!! I (D, male) had never had anything down my throat before and the whole thing was over quite quickly. Brought a teat to m eye and wasn't the nicest feeling in the world but was off and away 5 mins after the procedure.

sorry to say this but i think it helps if you have a nice doctor or nurse so you feel more relaxed.

when i had it done a young doctor was doing it, i think he might of been a student an older doctor was watching him and a girl.

when he put it in my throat i felt sick like i was choking and i tried to pull it out and he told me off, then a nurse held my hands behind my back.

the nurse was very nice though and the discomfort only lasted for a few seconds.

Having had one Endoscopy in May 2007 I had mild sedation....had to have a top up. In January 2011 I had another one this time fully sedated and only with the fairies for one and a half hours, no problems whatsoever.

Go for full sedation you know nothing about anything. Good luck as it sounds worse than it is.

Thanks again everyone just reading all your experiences are actually helping me feel more relaxed about it and its not sounding as horrible as I was imagining it had 3 days without any medication for all the heart burn acid and sickness and I'm starting to think coping with this for another week and half is going to be a lot worse than the procedure itself now on the plus side I might lose a bit if weight due to the lack of eating lol x

I had it done last year, because I was driving and had to get off straight away I opted for no sedation. They gave me a numbing spray which worked very well.

I gagged a little when it was going in and again when it was coming out but nothing too bad.

The nursing team were excellent and help me relax throughout, the doctor was a bit cold but he was only doing his job.

All in all it wasn't a too bad an experience and all i had was a bit of a sore throat afterwards.

Good luck I'm sure you'll be ok.

"The first time I had the sedation - it was rohipnol (sp?) or a similar drug and concious during the procedure. "

rohypnol was used in the NHS for endoscopies and similar procedures as it has exactly the right properties, it is a sedative, but the patient still has control and with 95% of patients they suffer amnesia so are not disturbed by memory of the procedure. It's not used any longer, but similar substances are used offering the same effects

I have had the pleasure (!!?? ) of having a camera in every hole I have! lol. The gastroscopies were varied. the first was the worst and that I had a large dose of Vallium. Hated every min of it. The rest (I have had four down my throat) were under anesthetic.(my sister works at Christies and she has said that you don't actually go fully under even though you think you do) The last one, they put me in a side room to wake up and after four hours I was still asleep! My wife asked and when they said, she said ' Oh don't do that or he will sleep all night!)

The ones up my backside hurt the most and that was when they took it around the bend. I tried to get off the table !!

Every time all they have found is some mild irritation.

The one up my penis, God I am sure the guy was gay!! lol He seemed to enjoy it too much lol.

I'm more worried of the sedation not working at all and it hurting and not being able to swallow for them and it making me sick etc especially knowing that the acid and sickness I get now is going to be even worse after the 14 days of no medication which usually reduced it I can have severe acid and sickness on an empty stomach which is obv why its being investigated since they've tried everything possible for the last couple of years to try and help it and on the max dose

I think it was started by being on regular ibrupofen for a long period of time plus other medications for rheumatoid arthritis and raynauds syndrome it took them such a long time to diagnose all this etc I had my gall bladder out 18 months ago due to gall stones which they thought would reduce it too it did for a little while after but now its back with avengence and they've tried taking me off all medication for the arthritis and raynauds with no effect so now its the further investigations to see what else it could be I never had heartburn or acud this bad when I was having my little boy even 7 years ago

Hopefully they can give me some help or answers so know it'll be worth it in the end they've said if I really need the medication I can still take it but for me it works better once regularly taken stopping it then starting again won't really help and the staff nurse who I asked about this said it may affect the result etc so don't want to risk taking it if they say I have to have another one just because of taking the medication hopefully they see and find everything they need to in the first one so I don't have to have anymore

We have both had an endoscopy and really didnt find anything to worry about, Sarah was under sedation and reckons it was fine, didnt know anything about it, the only bad part was the surgeon getting the tube down her throat before she went under totally, well at least she thinks it was the tube, thats what he told her lol.

I had mine by being local anaesthetic and found it to be ok, really is NOT worth getting worked up over,

Hope it works out ok for you.

Diazepam or midazolam is used. Maybe propofol if there is an anaesthetist there.

For lower gi endoscopies pethidine is added as a pain reliever.

I've had 2 down and 2 up, 1 of each without sedation and 1 of each with sedation. Totally bearable but take conscious sedation if it's offered. The worst part of it all is the moviprep you've to take before a colonoscopy that is truly horrendous
