Gonorrhoea and syphilis sex infections reach record levels in England

Be careful out there folks.

The BBC is reporting that England is seeing record high levels of gonorrhoea and syphilis sexually transmitted infections, following a dip during Covid years, new figures reveal.

People are being urged to practice safe sex to protect themselves and get tested if they may be at risk.

There were 82,592 cases of gonorrhoea in 2022 - up 50% on the 54,661 recorded the year before, the UK Health Security Agency says.

Syphilis cases increased by 15% from 7,543 to 8,692.

Condoms don't cover everything.

Condom use is safer sex, not "safe" sex

Unfortunately, once you get herpes it stays with you forever and pops it's ugly head now and again. Is controlled by Acyclovir tablets. Eventually wanes out as time goes by. Also, get vaccinated for hepatitis B

As far as HIV there's a three month window.

For example if you go with someone and find out a day or two later they are HIV infected, then you need to get tested and three months later. The GUM clinic will advise. Other STDs can take a few days to manifest.

If you want to truly be safe the only way is to never have sex again. I have a feeling that probably isnt going to be the popular option

With everything in life comes risks. Getting up out of bed in the morning is risky, when you get up you could have a heart attack, step funny and break your leg but we still do it.

Its what you do to manage and mitigate those risks that matters. Whether it be through condoms or other forms of protection. Do what suits you to bring the risk level to where you happy with it and just take care

Without a doubt it’s partially connected to the increased availability and use of prep.

That’s really changed a lot of peoples attitudes to using protection.

Religiously tested every 12 weeks, fre supply of condoms , free lube, even free prep if desired.

There's no excuse for folk not to get tested to be honest.

But oral sex spreads many sti too and like most I'd rather do without than wear a condom during a blowjob.

Limiting how many casual partners you have will reduce the risk.

If your 3 fuck buddies each have 3 fuckbuddies who also have 3 fuck buddies etc etc etc and you indulge in oral then your risk is way higher than average

Only for the stupid , im on prep but I still use condoms for any penetrative sex. I even use them on toys. The only time I don't is for oral. But as a top my risk is a lot less than my bottoms. But I get tested every 12 weeks and I limit the amount of randoms I fuck

Out of all the partners I meet it's those who claim to be "straight" that take the most risks

PREP is an anti HIV medication. You get it prescribed from GUM clinic.

Either take two tablets two hours or more before sex, one the next day and one the day after. Or can be daily continuous. Dr will advise. Kidney function needs to be checked every three months. It only prevents HIV not other STDs. Very expensive so to be used wisely. Usually given to men who have sex with men

Risk analysis is something most of us are quite poor at, and it's not helped by the media. Take those 56k cases for example, that's less than .0001% of the population.

I'd suggest that a good number of people on here are more careful than the general population (it's part of the culture) as well.

Probably a lot more chance of getting COVID, who is still wearing a mask?

Why is regular testing the only way forward? I'm not advocating people don't get tested but isn't a range of defenses better? After all the test confirms you either have an sti or you don't, but you still have one.

What people should be asking is why are people not getting tested regularly as syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia are 100% curable.

Also do people tell others they have been influenced that they have met.

A range of defense could be. But I think it's like in everything in life, you make a logical assessment and work out the risk factors and go with it. Like giving a blowjob without a condom on. Am I going to stop doing that? No.

I think openly talking about getting tested, destigmatising it, better access to testing, people being more open about having things and telling those they've come into contact with is the right way to go about it. Regular testing isn't the only way forward but it does go some way.

And yes, it's clichéd but there isn't such a thing as safe sex. Only safer sex. If you're adult enough to have sex, you should be adult enough to discuss it sensibly with those you're having it with.

I can say that most of the times I go im one of the oldest in the room. It's also usually more women than men there. But I make apportionments. The drop in clinic might be different and my local one also has men only clinics on certain day
