Newcastle and Gateshead

this came up today best a friend sent me a link from an article about "the chappelle show" and how it has reached it's 10th birthday.....

shocking rude, funny, controversial and thought provoking... hasn't been anything like it.. only ran 3 seasons but is very much iconic in black comedy....

so what are the shows that you think we have missed.... i have a week off soon i am going to go DVD mad... I have already committed to watching the wire from season 1... anything else???

This includes US tv?

I'd really like to metion: Generation Kill.

A series of six programmes adapted from the writings of a Rolling Stone (magazine, not band) reporter as he followeda Recon Squad through the Iran Invasion.

Excellant tv, and not quite what you would expect.

Ok, this is quite geeky, but if you've got the second season you can put on the subs to show the 'homageometer'

Love that show.

There was a sci-fi series on C4 about 15 odd years ago called Dark Skies. Started off with a really good pilot episode and then went downhill into stupidity very quickly. Can't remember if they made a second series (I wouldn't have done!!!)

The Avengers (Earths Mightiest Heroes) cartoon series was also good - ran for two seasons before they cancelled it so they could re-tool it to be more in-line with where the are taking the movie franchise.

The Booth At The End.

A guy sits in a diner and grants people their wishes. The catch is they're given tasks to accomplish before the wish is granted.

It's only set in one location (the diner) but it is captivating from the moment it starts.

If you want something light hearted then I suggest Better Off Ted.

"The Water Margin. Very odd at the time but probably would be more accepted now. And Monkey.

Me and my brother used to mute the sound on that show and make up our own script...Brings back so many memories..."

In the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heavens sought order. But the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed. Time and the pure essence of Heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the Sun and the Moon all worked upon a certain rock, old as creation. And it became magically fertile. That first egg was named "Thought". Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha, said, "With our thoughts, we make the World". Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it came a stone monkey.

The nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

Monkeeeeeeeeeey!

"Seinfeld. Only recently got into this. "

Seinfeld is the best sitcom every made. Soooo funny.

A more obscure one i quite liked was 'Orrible starring Johnny Vaughan. Absolutly panned at the time but i always thought it was pretty funny.

Invasion,

I think it was on channel four, only ran for one season in the uk, shame because the second series looked good.

"Game of thrones is brilliant! And if you like your gangster films like "goodfellas" or "casino" then boardwalk empire is definitely worth watching "

I will second the Boardwalk Empire series. There hasn't been many dramas or films about the gangsters during prohibition. I was surprised to find out Al Capone was a bit small fry. Maybe in future seasons we see him becoming more notorious?

If you like mob/gangster shows there was a show on in the late eighties called Crime Story, it was really good.

Wikipedia has a good write up on it if you're interested.

Best show ever has to be 'The Wire'.

Got all 6 seasons on boxed set- if its not yet on your must watch list, make some space!

The comedian Sean Lock wrote and starred in a great little comedy called 15 Storeys High. Very dry / absurdist humour.

"Pushing up daisies??? (Anna Friel)

Supernatural

Carnivale

Being Human "

I think it was called pushing daisies and it was just lovely. Such a warm and fun show to watch. Pity like most good (but slightly different) shows, it got cancelled after 2 seasons.

Supernatural has always been fun, I do miss the old hunt a monster a week days. Just started watching season 8 last week.

Wonderfalls was another that was really good. (from the same people that did pushing daisies) about a girl who worked at Niagara Falls and her life was starting to be controlled by small plastic toys from the shop that talked to her. The main fella from pushing daisies was in it and the fella from Eureka (the one with glasses who is in charge of the company) sorry names passed me by this morning.

Eureka is /was good fun, a bit silly but light hearted and an easy watch.

Others mentioned / not mentioned:

Twin Peaks (ended)

jericho (ended)

dead like me (ended)

invasion (ended)

lost girl (funny and sexy)

Reaper (ended)

Fringe (ended)

Grimm

Once upon a time

Chuck (ended)

The Riches (Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver) (ended)

Dexter

Madmen

Mentalist

Game of Thrones

Sadly most of the US tv that I like keeps getting cancelled.

The trouble with watching The Wire and Breaking Bad is that you are in danger of turning into this guy :

I thought I was the only person who watched Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me. None of my friends watched it and I didn't spend as much time on the internet then as I do now.

Well I admire your taste in TV shows even if your friends didn't

Sadly an audience of two was one of the main reasons they were cancelled.

Just been watching the theme tune opening on youtube for wonderfalls.

Think I need to dig out the series and watch it all again.

"Summer Heights High.

Australian comedy set in a school. Hilarious. (I know, Australian + comedy = oxymoron, but it was funny)"

and the sequel, Angry Boys. Loved them.

Black Books.

Brass Eye

Green Wing.

The League of Gentlemen.

Phoenix Nights.

And right now.... My Mad Fat Diary.
