"Sad retro bastard here. Playing Paperboy, the "Magic Knight" series and Great Escape on a ZX Spectrum emulator. " Keep hold of it, gaming where you have a physical tangible thing which works without patchy is pretty much over, and now with needing day zero patches and many games only being downloadable or playable with online authentication is becoming the norm and the publishers can just decide a game you own will no longer work

I dig out the NES/SNES/Mega Drive emulators and my old PS1 on a regular basis here." Using my somewhat high-end PC to emulate my old Spectrum +3 is pretty sad in my opinion. The graphics card alone has far more raw processing power than the late Sir Clive's machine could ever hope to achieve. However, the games were "fun", "challenging" and had no auto-save (well, no ability to save at all for that matter). Sure, the graphics are (much) better now and using my Xbox controller as a "Kempston" joystick means I'm not having to beg for a new joystick every year because I've broken it playing a sports game that requires violent, repetitive motions... I sometimes feel it's like sitting in the middle of the road doing just under 20mph in a car capable of 120mph+ because that's what a Sinclair C5 was only capable of. That said, unlike my current car at least the C5 was electric!

"I (Bilf) enjoy the Farcry series, most recently 5 & new dawn, the latter I really enjoyed, not yet picked up 6. I've also been having a lot of fun on wreckfest, nice to just enjoy racing around without stressing about lines or driving clean, one if my guilty pleasures is being an absolute nightmare in lobbies that attempt to race clean " Loved far cry 5 was fun game couldn’t get into 6 at all and kept slogging at it but wasn’t same maybe go back in time an do again

Alan Wake 2 on the pc, in ultra is a thing to behold, not tried it on xbox/ps so dunno how much worse that looks, I do know it's not got any of the RT features though, and the lighting in it is incredible. Not fired up hogwarts yet, so looking forward to it now.

"Currently totally addicted to AC Origins on PS4. Even dreaming about it... I need to get out more!! " I missed out on Origins when it first came out. I was completely fatigued on the AC series and any AC-style game at that time. I'm currently building my PS4 collection though and planning to run through them again; I've got Ezio Collection, IV Black Flag, Rogue Remastered, Syndicate, Origins and Odyssey. So I still need to pick up III Remastered and I'm pretty much set, not sure about Unity? It's never grabbed me. I just wish they did a Remaster of the first game, as it's always been a favourite of mine. And also if they could do a Remastered Sands of Time trilogy while they're at it, that would be great, too!

This is my first AC game - I started my PS journey with the Uncharted games, and then moved onto Ghost of Tsushima and was utterly bereft when I finished that - thinking I'd never match it either for the beauty of the scenery and expansiveness of the world and or for the game play, but Origins is coming close for me right now.

Oh wow, okay. I've not played GoT yet but it's on my list of games to get (my backlog is huge and forever growing!). I came back from my AC break with Odyssey, which is the next one after Origins and that game is beautiful-looking and VERY expansive, I remember spending a good 10 hours or so (playing on hardest difficulty, mind) getting 100% completion on the first island (Ithica)... only THEN to have the title screen pop up and you realise how big the rest of the world map is!!

"Can't be doing with the modern AC games, the whole open world thing has got too much now, no real story or cohesion any more. Wish that Ubisof would gp back to the original style" Yeah it got real outta hand a while back, when every single studio and every single franchise were all jumping on the whole "every game now has to be a 100+ hours open world game." Safe to say I never completely Odyssey, not even the main story. But the time I even made it to Athens I was getting burnt out again. That, and I just don't have the time like I used to as a student to play all the games that keep coming out. However, from what I understand the latest AC, Mirage, has done exactly what you said - gone back to AC's roots and dialed it back again, no massive open world but a smaller city setting, refocus on the stealth and parkour elements, etc. However, I wont be getting that game, or a PS5 any time soon - still trying to make my way through my mahoosive PS4 backlog!

That's a shame, because you'd think that dialling back the sheer scale of the game they'd instead be able to focus on getting a more in-depth and tighter focused story, characters, city aesthtics and environments, etc.

I believe mass production has taken a more important role nowadays.

Origin, Odyssey and Valhalla were good but felt really big and a bit unsubtle and repetitive to me. Mirage goes back to concentrating on stealthily working through smaller areas (like the bazaar, the library, the palace). It penalises direct conflict a bit. My all time favourites were AC2 and Syndicate and this felt to me like a return to them G

Controversial opinion (I've recently learned), but I always preferred Super Mario Kart over Mario Kart 64. Triple mushroom boost yet the opponent is right back up your arse instantly The old Super Nintendo game was more balanced I thought.

" I had the original console back in the day & I think 60fps (or 50fps for us in PAL territory) seems way too fast from memory. The actual game itself probably ran at something more like 25/30fps - if that. Most N64 games ran kind of choppy in general....Similar to PS1. If the emulation settings recommend 60fps then just go with that. If it seems slightly faster than you remember it's probably due to the PAL/NTSC difference.

I would say something awfully illegal but you know what I’m going to say. The other option is buying a PAL supernes and try to find the original cartridge. There is actually a retro games collector in the site, let’s see if he reads this and can advise on this. For the other options, feel free to DM

Some games were 'slowed down' in Europe for 50fps if developed outside of it in a 60fps territory as was the easiest hacky way to make a 50fps version. So you may remember it slower, but in reality was meant to be faster.

"If you are revisiting super nes games, chronotrigger has always been my favourite one, is a RPG though Never played it, being PAL region we missed out on Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross back in the day. I'm a fan of the Final Fantasy series but this has always felt like a big hole in my JRPG history/life. Is there anyway to get the Chrono games now in UK? Maybe from the PSN Store? I would say something awfully illegal but you know what I’m going to say. The other option is buying a PAL supernes and try to find the original cartridge. There is actually a retro games collector in the site, let’s see if he reads this and can advise on this. For the other options, feel free to DM " I had Chrono Trigger on the DS, so there's a very good chance it's still available on the Nintendo store, possibly the PSN store as well.

"I brought the PS5 for hubby but I wanna give it a go but I’m usually the copilot to the gamer. Any recommendations for the puzzler type? (On my second helping of playing Unpacking - I know… hardcore) Bx" Depends on what you are looking for, but if you're a PS Plus subscriber, you can get Superluminal, The Talos Project, The Pedestrian and Humanity for free, all great puzzle games G

"I (Bilf) enjoy the Farcry series, most recently 5 & new dawn, the latter I really enjoyed, not yet picked up 6. I've also been having a lot of fun on wreckfest, nice to just enjoy racing around without stressing about lines or driving clean, one if my guilty pleasures is being an absolute nightmare in lobbies that attempt to race clean Loved far cry 5 was fun game couldn’t get into 6 at all and kept slogging at it but wasn’t same maybe go back in time an do again" Same for me. I love Farcry 3,4,5 and New Dawn. But 6 was a massive let down. It doesn't have the same feel at all for me. Not sure if I'll bother with 7 when it comes out.

Completely agree loved previous games but 6 wanted to be amazing but couldn’t get into it but maybe try again and hope 7 is a return to form. Just finished cod3 and playing 2 again after months on spiderman 2 but now debating if start the metal solid collection or something older like red dead or replay last of us 2 which love both

"Gaming wisdom needed. I've long since missed the train when it comes to multiple.multiple button controllers and the like. I could cope with ABC on mega drive. So I'm wondering if to go VR. They look fun... But is it Wii gimmick or really playable ?" I do not like the playability of VR, but that might be because I’m ND. Interface lefts a lot to be desired and it’s often glitchy. Game graphics quality is still great, but I will say it’s not very user friendly

"How’s the fab gaming community doing been while so thought catch up currently on last of us 2 after doing 1st again for nice chilled fun" Started a Last of Us 2 replay not too long ago because I've done first 1 a few times but haven't stuck with it same with God of war Ragnarok don't think I have it in me to play games I've played before anymore. All I'm really on is Football Manager lately

"I had put aside Horizon Forbidden West to play Assassin's Creed Origins. Am now feeling almost as distraught at finishing Origins as when I concluded Ghost of Tsushima. Having a little break from gaming while I deal with the grieving process.... " I love horizon but struggle with forbidden west to stick and focus to it as ac came out and others but will get back to it eventually as loved the story but got half way and needed a gap

" I got really close to the end of Forbidden West then found out the scene where your friend is captured and you do a jail break was just for the demo and never happens in it so I just stopped. Will get round to it soon I guess
