domain name help

I have my own domain name that I have paid for.. and is with a company.. now because I refused to pay for their hosting after the initial period I cant seem to do anything with it.

I have logged onto their site, messaged their help people.. and they cant seem to answer me.

So what I need to know is can a company legally stop me using a domain name that I both own and have paid for????

I only want to redirect it to somewhere else currently.. but it just says status "fraud" on my account with them.. but acknowledges that I have it paid up... but only for 2 more months.. and I want to get this sorted before it is up.

Firstly, who did you register it with?

Second, go to whois.net and type in your domain name (don't worry about the www. part, just the rest of it). The results page should show your domain and you should then be able to view who is the owener of the domain, who is the administrative contact for the domain and who is the technical contact for the domain. What it should also tell you is what the DNS Servers for it are (you'll need to note this bit down).

If it is a .com domain and you are listed as the owner you simply ask the new hosting company to acquire the domain and that should be it. If it is a .co.uk domain you need the IPS Tag from your new hosting company and you tell the old hosting company to change the IPS tag to the new one. That may be the tricky part, if they're not acknowledging your emails. Do you have an online account management facility where you can make changes to your domain/s?

"It is saying its a locked domain.. ie locked to them.. "

If you own it they cannot prevent you moving it. Getting them to do it is the hard part though. PM me the domain name and I'll have a look at it, if that's ok. (I used to do this for a living many moons ago)

All my domain names are hosted elsewhere and not with the company that sells domains.

Not sure what you can do if you cannot access your domains to set up redirection etc.

However I believe you can transfer the domains out to another company.

Best thing to do is to look for help in Webhostingtalk.

Good luck.

If it is just a domain name, I would let it expire and go on 123 reg put in your old domain name it will say domain is taken, but then give you a list of closely worded alternatives domain names are cheap, but if you have a web site with these people it could be expensive to get the info of them if they have registered your domain in their name! Good luck Cali

I thought people didn't actually OWN the domain names they registed but simply had the right to use that domain for the length of time they paid for the registration.

The registrant owns it for the length of time they've registered it for purely for making changes to it in terms of where it's hosted etc.

Network Solutions, a part of InterNIC, maintains the database of all top level domain names around the world and it is Network Solutions you appeal to to retrieve a domain name that you have registered and need to reactivate (if your current hosting company are blocking you).

Think you are right on that one! if she waited till it expired then timed it right she may be able to get it back! But I haven't a clue really!

Cyberspace is full of people who register domains where the previous registration has lapsed, especially ones with a website attached. The presumption is that they have an added value to the previous registrant (is that the word?)

Ive sorted out the getting back onto it.. they had put a hold on it.. as saying it wasnt paid for. The invoice was dated two months from now.. lol

However the reason its not working to redirect to my blogger is that all the info is cleared.. I normally do this with no issues... but for some reason it wont accept the redirection.

anyone know how to link a cirtex held domain to a google blogger account????

You have to specify within google blogspot that you want to use your own domain name.

I have transferred domains without any problem. I always use 123-reg to register my domains. I use 123-reg for hosting 1 site and uk-cheapest for hosting a few others. I also host a lot of sites myself on my own server (actually a NAS)
