I'm on the register, it's in my will and my family and friends know. Make sure your nearest and dearest know your wishes because they can refuse harvesting when you die

As an aside, when I had my hip replaced I was asked if I'd like to donate the bone as it could be used for revisions or research. As I didn't have a dog to give it to or want to keep it on the mantelpiece as a souvenir I agreed - as it turned out, it was recycled on me as bone grafts!

Sure, I often get asked why.

I would only sign up if it would be for a member of my family or a chosen relative/ friend. Just a personal choice.

As far as putting people on register automatically I feel that is a step too far. I do empathise with the need to get a supply of donor organs but then I would really think its wrong to sign people up without their explicit consent.

I've been on the register since my early teens, but being a smoker, over weight have tattoos and piercings and had blood transfusions, I doubt they could use me for anything other than medical science lol

Thats a problem as to lack of donors....how many people would be willing to donate but hadnt registered for whatever reason and their next of kin refused...hence why I think it should be automatic inclusion....i believe the people that dont want to donate would remove themselves fairly quickly

I believe so. Just make sure you carry your card all the time with your ID so in the event of an accident they will find it x

My kids feel the same way about not wishing to be donors unless they know who receives the organ ie family or close friends. So conversely we feel the same about receiving.

I find myself having a rather split opinion on this.

For myself, I haven't even stated to my nearest and dearest how they should dispose, if that's the right word, of my body, I will be gone, so it makes no difference if they cremate me or bury me, so long as there is a place where friends and family can pay their last respects, and some evidence that I existed in the form of a stone or plaque, then I don't care.

As to doctors taking bits, well, again, I'll be gone, so as long as the majority of me gets planted, then I guess I don't care.

However...

I pity the doctor who approaches me to ask if they can take bits of a child or partner of mine, just the thought of someone raiding their body fills me with feelings of anger.

And now for the really hypocritical part...

Would I accept my nearest and dearest having organ transplants to cure them or save their lives.... absolutely!

I can't help how I feel about it, I can only hope that I never have to make that call.

I understand it would be a hard decision to make regardless of the age of the person that has died.

I have had this conversation with my friends and their response was, they didn't like the idea of being cut up or not having the whole body buried etc

IMO what better gift can you give? After all its only going to rot or turned to ashes once you've passed, so I'd rather save another life, and keep another family together that bit longer.

For me, and I am aware that I am in the minority here - I am not comfortable with the idea of parts of me living on in somebody else. I am not a religious person but I am spiritual and the concept does not fit with my view of the world. Does that make any sense?

I'm getting stuffed when I die. Giving the Devil horns and in a Spiderman costume. If my organs can be used, which I doubt, then they can take what they want. Not like I'm gonna need them.

I don't carry a donor card, that doesn't mean i won't donate though, my next of kin know my exact views on this and they all share the same views as me. My reason for not carrying one is simply that i have worked in this field and things i have seen have put me off carrying a donor card, hence i don't carry one but my next of kin know my exact views on it.

Already have and family know. Recently lost a family member, his immediate family took comfort from the fact his kidneys were used by 2 people and hopefully changed their lives for the better

When I was nursing on paediatric ward one of the hardest things that anyone could have to do was ask a parent if they would consider donating their child's organs in the event of their death.

Luckily I never had to ask that question but a high percentage of parents who agreed, came back to us saying they were told that their child had saved or improved the lives of however many children and that it was of some comfort knowing this.

The most upsetting thing I have seen was a five year old girl dying because no organ was available. In an ideal world everybody would donate but it's not an ideal world and it's each individuals choice and I would respect decisions made either way.

But only if they promise to look-after whatever bits they take, and agree to wear brightly coloured over-the-knee socks in my honour at least one day a week.

I'm all for it and am on the doner register.

For me, I believe that if you are willing to receive an organ or indeed say yes to your partner, child or family member receiving one, then it would be very hypocritical to not be on the list.

So to all who say no .... Would you receive a donated organ or let them transplant one into your child or loved one etc .... What would you do if they needed one and because of choices people made to not donate, none were available?

Id just opt out... there is no way I am having my chance of survival put at risk because I am on the donor register.

I have heard friends that are paramedics refer to fellow bikers as walking donors..

I have signed up to donate my body to a university. I never really thought about it until I spoke to a doctor who started off on an annatomy degree course. She said you become attached to your body, she even attended the cremation service for the person when they had finished with the body.
