Two.

One was an on the spot alternative to points, the local constabulary were having a blitz day and had courses running in a local leisure centre every hour.

They pulled you for whatever offence and then offered you a course if you could attend within two hours.

I took the course for not wearing my seatbelt.

There is a limit of 42mph in a 30, 53mph in a 40, 64mph in a 50, 75mph in a 60 and 86mph in a 70. If you exceed those, you will not be offered a speed awareness course.

Sorry, but no.

Firstly, this ignores the fact that there's often 20mph limits in high risk areas like schools. Secondly, it coukd actually increase the likelihood of speeding in built-up areas and increase the likelihood of pedestrians getting killed.

Nor do I see why driving more makes you more likely to speed. I passed my test at 17 and am almost 50 and have no points etc. I'm not saying I never speed but I do my best not to, having been a stupid teenager who stepped out in front of a car...

I don’t speed in 30 limits. Extra care in residential areas.

I have been known to boot it when presented by an open road. Not so much these days, too busy, too many idiots and cameras.

I got flashed on a DC when I ran out of patience with a goon in a BMW who seemed incapable of driving at a consistent speed. Turned out he was braking for the camera

As an experiment I suggest people follow an artic flat out on level ground, it'll be doing 56mph & look what your speedo shows. Likely 58/59mph.

Not a supermarket artic or Maritime etc as these are often governed at 50 or 52 hence the overtaking.

Truck speed limiters are very accurate compared to cars.

Yes, the car speedometer shows up to 3mph faster than you're actually going. Google maps shows you an accurate speed.

I have none. I always set the cruise control for the “speed limit” and so I know I won’t go over it. Allows me to focus on what is on the road rather than having to look at my speedo all the time.

Always fun on a motorway or dual carriage when you can see a whole bunch of cars hitting the brakes because they see a police car or speed camera and I go sailing on by knowing I am within limits

A friend of mine got a 6 month driving ban for ignoring an official speed ticket. It took ages to come through

You can easily check Nanna. Just Google 'share my licence' and go onto the .gov.uk site. Have your driving licence number to hand as well as your national insurance number and Bob's your mum's (or dad's) brother.

I've done the course once. My fault for not noticing I'd gone into a 20mph area. I've tried to change my driving since.

Your suggestion above makes me think you ignored all the stuff on your 4 courses about the increased likelihood of pedestrian deaths at only slight increases in speed (and height of bonnet).

Speed limits are not there to inconvenience drivers but to protect other road / pavement users

One guy that was on the course called to say he was on his way but might be late an not make it on time due to traffic, the bloke running said no, problem I'll report it as a no show and you'll get the points and the fine... he turned up with minutes to spare. He told us during a break that he had gone over 100mph to get there on time

One was at a race course. Horse racing but still

Doing 57 on the motorway at night on an empty road but with roadworks and a 50 limit

One was for 35 in a 30

Also had points for doing 45 in a 30 when i thought I was on a national speed limit area of 60mph but itnwas dark. Turned out the 30mph gate signs were damaged - one facing a field and the other leaning at a 40 degree angle away from the road.

Didnt challenge the last one as i was worried they would then charge me costs etc...

I've done 2.

Not convinced that the number you've done reflects your driving in any meaningful way. My partner treats local roads that she knows like her own personal race track. She always feels more comfortable driving in urban areas and is therefore far more likely to speed in these making her one of those really frustrating drivers that suit at 40 - 45mph whether in a 60 or 30 limit.

My first course was coming from a 60 into a 30 with the camera van less than 100 metres past the limit change and I had slowed too late and was still doing 36 when clocked. That one I believe was a bit underhanded (but yes, it was my fault). The second was fairly and squarely my poor driving. Wide open road but clearly a 30 limit. I was distracted after a pretty tough afternoon and was driving in auto pilot and sat at 37mph

Both courses though have left me amazed at the incredible lack of knowledge most drivers have of the highway code. Fair enough if no one remembers the stopping distances at various speeds (let's be honest they're meaningless anyway) but when shown a picture of a road and you get feed back from the group that the limit could be anywhere between 60 and 30 (road with street lighting all along it) or 30 and 70 (approach to a roundabout with massive blue road signs) you have to wonder how some people even passed their test.

I have never been on one.

I did wonder about being caught on a smart motorway a few weeks ago at 01:30 am when the road was perfectly clear and the gantry was showing 40mph. No one slowed down for it. It was only one gantry lit, the next gantry along the motorway was normal.

I havent received a fine.

It def slowed me down a bit though , not as much as losing a good friend in a car accident did though (not my accident I hasten to add) but if you don't get shaken to your core by something like that...God help you.

What I don't understand is these temporary speed limits. I always try to drive at that speed but everyone gets flying past. Do they know something I don't. Don't cameras get adjusted with the temporary speed limits?

The other one is when there is no traffic, nobody about and they stick 40mph on the screen on a managed motorway, then suddenly to 60, then back to 40 etc for absolutely no apparent reason whatsoever. This from someone who I have to say always drive within the speed limit but not too slow to annoy others either

If it's an average speed limit temp zone, you can go about 10% over and be fine.

With the motorway managed ones, not all the over the motorway signs have speed cameras in them.

Can't remember when I last saw a police car though either and I drive 100 miles an evening when working.

There's that many speedbumps , potholes, traffic lights , mini roundabouts , badly designed junctions , badly designed estates nowadays its quite hard to speed

But I still manage it

I do however think all drivers should do a motorbike test before a car one.

They teach you to be more observant and aware.

So you can drive faster

I’ve done 3. One in person and two online.

I don’t drive fast as such, I just get easily distracted and my speed goes up slightly.

My speed courses have all been for less than 35mph

I think I now make a conscious effort to stick to speed limits but it’s the other folk riding your arse that are annoying.

One. I had a call from someone who was suicidal and I believed was about to attempt suicide - so I broke the speed limit to get there. And I would do it again. No one was harmed and I got the person to A&E before they harmed themselves too badly.

Not done one yet, but that could be about to change as the 20mph maximum speed limit in built up areas in Wales is about to be ushered in by the clowns who deemed electric kettles, microwave ovens etc etc as being non essential supplies during lockdown, and created their own housing crises by their so called Rent Smart Wales policy which has turned out not to so smart after all as landlords sell up. Somebody has to fund WAG stupidity, and who better than motorists on Welsh roads

Weird how professional drivers have to do CPC courses every 5 years, ie how to drive lessons, yet a normal car driver can pass thier test at 18 and never do anything about his/her driving ever again. People then wonder why so many accidents and bad drivers in the roads

I do think there is now a case for front and rear dash cams so that we can attempt to defend ourselves

They are increasingly being used to prosecute so, in my eyes, they would also be a useful defence tool

One. I was caught on the A1 travelling at 79. At 78 I wouldn't have been summoned

Fortunately the course was online as it was covid time and as it was online it was half the time of the classroom

I was impressed with the bloke who led the course as he wasn't condescending and although I didn't agree with everything he said, he was very informative and there are a number of tips and driving advice I've implemented. A great example being how to recognise what the speed limit is

Due to being in sales, for the last 30 years I've driven 30,000+ miles a year and a number of bad habits had become the norm which I'm now very concious to avoid

Did one course about 5 years ago, just driving into a village and never saw the sign but was slowing anyway. Got caught at 37. I've been back since and still couldnt see the sign as was covered by bushes. Was reminded that lampposts mean 30. This village had old fashioned decorative style lamp posts.

6 weeks later had to drive my dad between 2 hospitals with the instructions of getting there asap as we would have had to wait 2 hrs for an ambulance to transport him. 2am empty country road, distracted by dad in pain. 39.

3 points which was a fair cop but gutted with myself.
