It’s how they pronounce “compost”. Just gets to me.

Worked with a few in my time. I do enjoy their nuances on words dependant on where they’re from though. Like our dialects.

Also Americans.......

Why are there so many spelling mistakes in the Merriam-Webster dictionary?

Given that it's 'America's most trusted online dictionary for English word definitions, meanings and pronunciation'......shouldn't everything be spelt correctly?

I watch a lot of US crime and investigations on Youtube and the one thing that irritates immensely is the southern states where they say the word 'vehicle'. They actually say "vee-hee-cle.

"Sir, you were driving this vee-hee-cle at 65 MPH on the highway in a 40 zone".

Yes. Most Brits hate it here too. That's why we voted to make it much harder to go somewhere else on the same continent, to live and work. We're nothing if not logical.

We're also really good at saying everything is fine, when it really isn't.

Hardly any jobs here come with health insurance (mainly very well paid ones)

And, they exclude any pre existing conditions or conditions that Joe the barely trained form filler thinks might be connected. Like, if you have a mental health issue, they'll exclude anything relating to a heart attack or something.

Anyway.

I do get irritated by how cheerful American colleagues are ALL OF THE TIME! Even when we KNOW they are not feeling cheerful, they sound cheerful. This is difficult to stomach

Blimey, this got ugly!! Unless I’ve missed the sarcasm - not entirely impossible

Americans do pronounce some words oddly, I agree. But then so do we. I mean, just listen to scousers….. And it may be called English but we all know it’s a melting pot of numerous ancient languages such as Latin, Saxon, Norman, Nordic etc.

Language is evolving at an alarming rate - look at how we used to speak in Shakespeare’s time (400 years ago?), then 100 years ago. Now watch a programme on’t’telleh wiv summ yoof and try to understand a word they’re saying!

With different countries further dividing into regional accents, it’s inevitable.

It’s probably the same on Chinese Fab - “ugh, you lot in Hong Kong don’t half talk funny…”

And in the spirit of equality, Brits take the piss out of other Brit's English too. How many claim not to be able to understand a Glaswegian? How many decry Estuary English?

"Blimey, this got ugly!!

But the title of the thread is American English. If someone wants to start a moan about Scouse/Geordie/Cockney/insert dialect here, then I'm sure we'll all have a good go

Terribly sorry, Mrs KC, I didn't quite get that.

*Shouts very loudly, and slowly*

"Yup we all are redneck, hillbilly, gangsta Americans. Sorry we don't speak proper crown English to be acceptable. Then again 1776 was one of those reasons.

Erm, if that was aimed at me then I haven’t made my point very well. I was going for woah there, we all have differences and the English don’t actually own their own language! No. The ignorant pricks stayed here when the Mayflower et.al set sail. There were strict "no prick" criteria for early immigration to the USA. The descendants of the pricks are today's BMW and Mercedes drivers

Where is your so called tolerance of you fellow Americans when they don't conform to what is an out-dated concept of what it means to be American. Take the worrying rise of Anti-drag laws being created, I think its a real step backwards.

And to say that Brits have a hive-mind mentality is just laughable. It shows how little knowledge or understsnding you have of our nation, as well, apparently, as your own.

And to say that Brits have a hive-mind mentality is just laughable. It shows how little knowledge or understsnding you have of our nation, as well, apparently, as your own. It's state rights isnt,it ? We are more vast. One size doesn't fit all now does it. Clearly you haven't been updated .

One size does fit all when it came to North versus South, back in the day, thankfully.

Bigger isn't an excuse for being bigoted or arrogant.

Clearly I am more up to date than you! No you are not. My family ancestors are from Massachusetts cape cod Wareham and Boston.Guess who was north you silly dickhead. Try another excuse for your ignorance. "

You said one size didnt fit all. In relation to sl avery it did.

A very long time ago, you split and then UNITED!

State rights do differ, yes, and as I said, a lot of the central and southern states have regressed in their attitude towards human rights.

For a very rich country, the chasm between the rich and the poor has never been greater, the healthcare system is dire and the Republicans are living in cloud cuckoo land, still supporting a man who is guilty of sexual offences against women, impeached more than any other in history... I could go on, but since you have resorted to personal insults instead of a rational discussion, I think I will leave you to reflect on your behaviour.

"So in conclusion. I prefer tolerance over people. Compared to the UK ignorance over pronunciation. Just ask. Bill has different pronunciations than me on certain things. Don't be dicks. Now you can see how I am more tolerant. Clearly. We are more diverse .

Some* Americans are more diverse, but as a nation your education and knowledge of anywhere other than the US, is not great. The population nearer the East and West Coast seem to be more open minded. So basically you are calling the everyone in the middle dumb? The difference is we tolerate their differences. Think of each state as thier own country. Their own culture . Their own dialect. Their own values. You can't say we are all the same. I can honestly say the UK is. It's a hive mentality. We are not. What applies in my state doesn't applies in others according to the people's wishes. Do they not?

Not dumb, thats your word, not mine, I would use the word regressive, particularly in relation to womens rights to choose whether to become a parent or not.

any other historical references you want to play? I can say sl@very is a direct result of European crowns wanting to make profits. Yet they are not held accountable. Yet we are the bad guys. Odd how you ignore that factual evidence.

When I first started reading this thread, it was ,I thought a light hearted jibe about the way we said things, as it progressed it seemed to turn anti-american,to go as far as get out of this side of fab, people being people are allowed their opinions, all people, not some, not those people but all, even those we don't agree with,

Now you know how the majority think how terrible us Americans are. Clearly explained in this thread. We are dumb stupid illiterates. In typical UK fashion. Now you know why I wish and pray to cut the umbilical cord with European influence. Clearly we are unworthy.

So did I.

Even my first reply was supposed to just reference a difference in our language.

I love America, and the country its self and the idea of the land of the free always draws me to it.

And I u defat and why they pronounce things differently. They might be English speaking, but want it unique for them, not very strange why then is it? American English, makes sense really.

Let’s have a sense of humour about it! …. Via a video.

Poor pronunciation and limited understanding of the language, its history and coloqual dialects. Thus leading to so many movies and TV programs showing Americans sarcastically questioning English people if they speak English

Good burn, at least I won't have to live with a lifetime of debt to treat it though I don't either it's how you plan. I make more 4 times more than someone doing the same profession there. There is this thing called insurances I don't know if you aware of that.

You lot voted for Trump!

Argument won!

and if you can't stand us. go to USA Fab and stay outta here!

simples You are tolerant you are exactly the reason I hated the UK.Enjoy "

I think the main reason you hated the UK was your failure to grasp British humour. Some rather unfortunate comments on an otherwise light hearted thread.

I lived in Connecticut for 4 years… I was ready for Aluminum, tires, pavement, right wing Christian fundamentalists..

Day one.. WTF is ‘Cilantro’

Then I heard a colleague say they ‘could care less’ .. then I kept hearing it everywhere, in movies..

Sorry, but I need to get something off my chest that's been upsetting me for a while and I can't keep it in any longer. It's ‘I COULDN'T CARE LESS’. Not ‘I COULD CARE LESS’. If you COULD care less there is less you can care! If you couldn't care less there is no less you can care.

Jeez! come on people, this is a legitimate reason to use your damn guns..

I like some bits of the good ol' USA, and as I have family living there I get to hear a fair bit about daily life.

My main concern is that it seems to be slowly turning into a theocrasy, daily life, law, politics, morals and ethics, all seem to be moving more towards being dictated by religion.

That, and the fact that common sense seems to take a backseat sometimes, schools are banned from teaching the theory of evolution, Darwin etc, and they ban certain books because they may "harm" their children....yet they are ok with guns?

Essex.

The spelling differences, is mainly due to changes made after the war of independence, in an effort to distance the USA from GB.

Regarding aluminium/aluminum, the man who discovered it used both spellings.

Finally, it is believed that (from memory) the Boston accent is the closest to the British accent from the 1700s.

At least 13 states mandate that teachers teach creationism in schools. Thats 26%. A quarter of your children are being taught that the Earth is only 6000 years old, yet science proves that the existence of lead proves the world is older than that by more a factor of 1000 lol.
