Making a difference

What have you done lately to make a difference?

You don’t have to express it here, (we’ll be accused of virtue signalling), it’s just a question to think about.

Do you take a stand for things even at a cost to yourself?

Does it matter to you, or as long as you and yours are okay is that what matters?

How do I make a difference, I stay clean and be of service to thise around me and to society as a while, by amending my behaviour and living a different way

"Do our jobs count?"

Sure. But within your job do you take risks in line with your moral compass or just toe the line?

Yes i feel strongly about technology taking over i go out of my way to pay by cash and to avoid people who deal in card only payment, modern cars you can't work on so buy older cars/vans built to last and at a reasonable cost cash of course

If you mean making a difference in other people's lives then yes I've done many things over the years and often at the expense of my own needs.

I have bypassed company policy on a number of occasions to simplify a meaningless and complex setup which was appreciated by everyone involved apart from the company itself.

I support my widowed dad emotionally on a daily basis and practically when needed. This takes up as much of the emotional strength and time I have because my husband and children come first.

The causes that I value i speak on. At work I speak on them and hold power to account. Sometimes they respect you more for it. Sometimes they hate you more. But making sure we’re doing right by vulnerable groups is important to me.

I run photography classes for 10 - 18 year olds. All supervised. Go on photo walks and teach about environment as well as photo composition

Also I’ve of course fallen out with family members because of their (small c) conservatism and how some views of theirs are harmful to people.

I actually don't know. I used to make a difference. I still like to think I'm a moral a decent person, but maybe these days I only act when opportunity presents itself, instead of searching for good to do.

I do take a stand, even knowing the consequences I find it hard not to. What’s the point having values if you don’t act on them ? I have more time for people who say I honestly don’t give a shot about x than people who claim to care and have no balls to do anything

Sorry I read the op incorrectly.

I don't go on marches or wave banners. I do speak up a lot of the time but I also keep quiet when a braver person might put themselves in harm's way to get their point across. I'm a regular human really

Respect to all people who "do the right thing" when nobody is watching and when they genuinely believe no-one will ever know they did the right thing...in my experience such people are the rarest of the rare...or perhaps very good at what they do!!

This makes a massive difference to so many people. Helps keeps women in work and progress careers when childcare costs are so high

*gets out virtue-signalling flags*

I found a bag at a bus stop a few months ago.

Had a quick look in it to see if there was an address or phone number. Had cash and cards in and was stuffed with all kinds of stuff.

Didn't want to keep rifling through it so walked to the opposite bus stop and got a bus to the police station.

Sat there for 45 minutes until I was seen and handed it in.

Added over an hour onto my journey home, but I hope the owner thought to ring the police station and got it back.

*puts flags away*

I didn't give my name. I was asked if I wanted to in case no one came forward and I could have the cash, but I said no.

Wish I'd said yes now, then I'd have known if it was claimed.

See I think sometimes the small things make a bigger impact than we think. Like Bad Nanna and the bag. I think that kind of thinking is passed on to others. I don't think making an impact has to be a big statement.

One tip for things that might get lost - leave a note like : if found please call xxx number....you can also have that as a screen lock message on your phone (obviously with a different number to call). Then if an honest person finds it they can reunite you with it easily.

I wonder if there was anything in it to identify the owner and if the police contacted them.

My aunt who was as absent minded as they come left her handbag in a phone box. When we went back the bag was there but the cash was gone. You balanced that injustice

I was hoping there was a phone number because she was on the bus that just left the bus stop. Couldn't see a phone in the bag so she may have had one on her and I could have got in touch. She may have realised before the next stop and got off. I waited around a little while before going to the police station.

The police woman said they don't contact banks because the banks won't do anything.

I think they keep the bags locked away until someone claims them. Don't think they actively look for owners.

I helped a couple of young guys at the gym on Sunday. Thy looked fairly new and were on the leg press and they weren't lifting much and their form looked quite shaky that could've lead to injury if they kept at it. So I went up to them and offered advice on how to perform the exercise with good form which they accepted and also told them to lower the weight if needed to get their form correct.

One of them came up to me later and thanked me and told me how they could feel it more in their legs and I like to think I made a difference in helping them out even if I'm not the biggest guy

A few years ago when I was younger and fitter I intervened when a couple of yobs were giving a young girl some grief. Gave her a lift home. When we got there her dad came out and I think was about to give her a lecture about accepting lifts from strangers until she explained the situation. Been good friends with her family ever since. Even went to her wedding.

I listen to those who want to talk to me about their issues and hopefully I ease their discomfort with words of support and encouragement. That's about all I can do.

D on the other hand is always actively helping others. From helping customers in the supermarket when doing his own shopping to holding up traffic if someone is struggling in the road. Only little random acts but these are the things that I love about him.
