Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I've heard two news reports today that seem to indicate the real costs of austerity and the recession of the last few years.

The first is that the suicide rate has increased. It's up by 30% in Wales.

The other is cruelty to and abandonment of animals is also up. The London news has had a report on horse cruelty, specifically, today.

Have you seen increasing signs of despair?

Not despair but a definite widening of the gap between the rich and poor and a hardening of views on both sides which I fear will only get worse and lead to more civil unrest the likes of which we saw a couple of summers back.

Yes, the increase in food banks. The office building I work in now has a permanent box in reception for people to leave donations. A charity then collects the box once a week and leaves a new one for us to fill.

I am not yet convinced that we are not witnessing an engineering of that very level of unrest.

Leave the worms for the birds - just open the tin first.

Does holding my head in my hands and shaking it occasionally count?

Were you doing it before the recession? If you are doing it more since then yes, it counts. I do think there has been a downturn in optimism in some circles.

Merseyside

In the 70's the big bosses earned around 20 times more than the average worker. Today those big bosses earn around 80 times the average worker.

People so poor they rely on food banks to feed themselves. Some of those people are in full time minimum wage jobs.
