"Just re negotiated the virgin package, saving £5 a month, had to drop down from 60meg to 30meg, as was getting about 35-40meg tops, anyone else been dissapointed with their broadband and downgraded speeds?" No, you won't... if the street box / mux is oversubscribed (eg 80% capacity) then bandwidth falls off a cliff... I live in a uni/student area, during holidays 30mbit service pegged at 30 mbit, during term time you're lucky to sustain 2 mbit. Virgin will upgrade the street box the same week BT come along to install fibre. | |||

"virgin all the way for me . never really had an issue with bb .rare time i have it was the due to equipment just giving up the ghost and was replaced no issues ! helps that bunk knows his way about with bb and can sort wireless connection on hubb and we know we can change wireless channel if need be . also virgin is umlimited useage ,only restrict your speeds if excessive down load or streaming at peak periods(higher the speeds the higher your limit ) .where as sky charge you extra for unlimited BB as friend of ours found .they were forced by sky to up grade to the monthly fee for bb .they are now a virgin customer and very happy with the change ." I do know that I have unlimited usage with Plusnet and the speed isn't restricted, which I didn't have with Virgin... ...and I'm paying less! | |||

"You need to look at the contention ratio. It's usually about 50:1. I think it's safe to say that Virgin offer the fastest broadband experience. Rather than relying on wireless connections its better to install a wired Ethernet system. Just make sure you install the correct cable for a gigabit Ethernet connection." not necessarily so, that is the ADVERTISED number the fact is the cabinets are built to take up to 288 individual connections. 6,000,000,000 / 288 = 20833333 so 20 meg assuming the cab gets the full 6 x 1 gig lines in... This would be 288 / 6 = 48:1 contention in densely populated areas the cab may only get 1 line in, so contention is 288:1 and theoretical max is 3.4 mbit, but by that time router loads are so high you will be lucky to see half of that, which is the reality where I am for example. | |||

"Im a virgin salesman haha Issues with speed tend to be from national customers (ie virgin BB over copper wire not cable) which hits the same problems as any other user, bad wireless connections or they are riddled with spyware and malware eating into their connection because they do stupid things like use internet explorer. If you are having problems with fibre optic broadband and your not wireless then install and run basic things like malwarebytes anti malware, microsoft security essentials and spybot search and destroy, also switch to using google chrome or firefox. Most of the time that will give you the speed virgin is famous for :D" Hiya, using Explorer: do we have a choice with that? If using Chrome or Firefox I find neither Fab nor Sky ever work properly with those browsers. Both sites seem to be optimised to work only with IE. I use Firefox for just about everything else tho. | |||

Sounds daft but I was told by a Virgin engineer that if you have the wrong one it will affect speed and you'll suffer drop outs. I was having a new TiVo box installed when he noticed mine was wrong. Since changing it my service has been flawless, zero drop outs and my wireless speed increased. If you adapter has a white label on it, near the end that plugs into your superhub, its the wrong one and could be part of your problem... | |||
