Do you feel sometimes that you struggle with the perception of the written word, or how it’s been perceived?

That actually it contains no emotion or feeling or that can’t always be heard in what you’re writing.

Something you mean as a joke is taken seriously or when you’re trying to sound sincere it can come across condescending.

That’s why I prefer a phone call over texting. Hear what I am saying. And in the future or when we do message you can hear my voice saying it.

What can be said in seconds on a phone may take a fair few messages.

Now I like messages, don’t get me wrong, especially ones that show you care or are thinking of someone but sometimes feel certain topics are better to be spoken than written.

This is probably more generalised than chat on here but even with friends things can be misconceived.

Of course it contains emotion, poatry, plays, books all convay emotion as well as creating emotion in the reader.

The problem lies with the words used.

As for how people precieve me, if they missread me then that is their issue not mine, I'm not too bothered if a group of strangers miss read my intentions.

The people that know me, know how I speak and the emotions and truth behind my words.

The tone you write a message will not always be read in the same tone. I.e if your mood is happy you’ll write in that tone maybe making a joke. But the recipients mood maybe pissed off so they read in that tone and will take offence to the joke.

I don't struggle with it. You can interpret what I say whichever way you like. Your interpretation is biased but who you are, your mood and what you think of me. My intention has been set but I cannot control the reception.

Phone is certainly better than text as tone is present.

There's way too much still missing though compared to spending time in person and also getting to know the person.

I find Derrida's work really helpful looking at language. Identifying the chain of metaphor and the terms used that are necessary but insufficient due to difference in perception and placing them 'under erasure'. Asking the write/speaker to elaborate on them, checking my understanding.

In reality it can only go so far and if we have got to the point we are having conversations that deep, I view it as an indication we need to meet.

After all only 7% or so our communication is expressed through language.. rest is non verbal.

Quite a lot of the time, people don’t write things properly so what are you going to do?

Writing well is hard. It is a real skill and the limited space on social media/forums doesn’t lend itself to good writing. It is not surprising people misunderstand what has been written when even the author often doesn’t really know what they want to say.

I adore the music of the written word. The way a particular touch can invert meaning, that it can be rushed but also slowed right down.

I prefer it to the cacophony of spoken language, particularly in combination with body language and other social context.
