Pussy Dilemma .....

Have a major dilemma here regarding my pussy .......................

ok perverts back from whence u came the four legged variety with fur .........

said pussy is poorly, had a thyroid op a while ago that hasnt worked unfortunately so he is still hyperthyroidic and losing weight he now cant afford to............. cant have the other thyroid gland removed cos that could prove to be fatal because of another tiny gland that can be compromised.

He can be treated by diet - prescription one that does not contain iodine (iodine encourages the thyroid gland to make its hormone thereby too much in system) but this is exceptionally expensive and the insurance company will only pay until next October. A bag of biscuits is £17 and tins are £1.50 - one tin lasts one day and biscuits last about a week .... if that long.

The alternative is to have my pussy nuked ............... he would have to go to London to the Veterinary Hospital (Royal College) for four weeks and have radioactive treatment - he will practically glow and have to be treated and handled with gloves - wont be allowed home for at least four weeks, this hopefully will kill off the bad part of his thyroid gland and leave the remaining good part working .......... this treatment is very very expensive ...... again the insurance would cover it ......... but am not sure wot to do ........

would anyone care to give there two pennyworth ....... all answers welcome

Well I know I'm not a pussy but I AM hypothyroidal from birth and there are certain foods I have to stay away from for my thyroid to work at maximum efficiency.

I actually live off fruit now mostly because most vegs I used to like block iodine production. You're looking for a chemical compound in foods otherwise known as 'Goitrogens.'

If this helps poor kitty, I know pets will have some veg mixed in with their meat and gravy etc so spinach is one of those foods and so is corn, cabbage, sprouts and the likes of all leafy greens and broccoli. These will slow down iodine intake!

I was also wondring how old your cat was. A few years ago my cat had the same operation which as you say is very expensive. He was 12 and only lasted another 18 months but they weere good quality months. If you cat is younger than mine was and otherwise in good health, go for it if he means a lot to you

Surely whenever we take responsibility of caring for any animal, we must do so with the animals best interest at heart, regardless of the any financial or emotional implications it places upon ourselves....

Nope he's not in pain but if the problem is not controlled it will create other problems, like, racing heart, upper end of high blood pressure, he also has a heart murmur (which hasnt affected him before), the main worry is the amount of weight he has lost ....... oh forgot to add ...... this problem is normally controlled by tablets ....... sadly my cat is allergic to both types that are on the market ........

Awww poor kitty.

You pay the insurance premiums......make the most use out of them. I'd explore the surgical option if its covered on the insurance. Hope he gets sorted soon. I have 2 myself, both geezers and would hate it if they were poorly.

My cat had a problem with the thyroid gland op, she was pretty old though when she had it so I make do with special food and an occasional trip to the vet, she seems fine, I wouldn't nuke yours!

I am .............. I dont know which way to go ......... if he is on the diet he cannot have any treats at all of any description which also includes things outside he could catch !!!! as this will give him iodine - just dont know how successful zapping him will be .......

Like I said a few comments up, he might only need iodine blocking foods added to his existing diet

Most of the stuff in tins is crap. Brands like Science Plan or Euknuba have special types of dry food that's tailored to the cats needs.

I used to work in a pet store years ago and I think some things are still rattling around in my organic hard drive

Perhaps the way to look at is through role reversal…

If you were in the cat’s position, what decision would you feel was most loving and kind for your owner to take on your behalf….

Awww no way so basically he has burned the candle at both ends? If I were you, I'd still google cat hyperthyroidism and goitrogens. You may be surprised by how difficult vets make things for you so you end up having to pay them more than you should. Research is the least you can do for your froggy pussy lol xx

Is he allergic to drugs like tyroxine etc? I know when I worked in pharmacy the vet used to write prescriptions for animals. Think they were a bit dearer as they had to do them as private prescriptions.

its the opposite of thyroxine he needs and yeah he's allergic to both that are used ...... he throws up so therefore doesnt get the goodness from them and loses more weight ....... he has lost over 3.1 kgs since November and is all skin and bone he is weighed weekly now and a +/- 100 grams is a big thing

With the treatment and aftercare what quality of life will your pussy have in the long term?

I dont think nuking your pussy is a good idea either.

With a cat that age maybe diet is best, my cat was at the same vetinary hospital for 2 weeks after an accident. They were fantastic and let us visit him as often as we wanted but he did pine for us a lot and i can imagine your cat would pine even more if he has never been away from you for any length of time

My cat had kidney failure and had lost a huge amount of weight.

The vets started him on steroid injections and also a low protein, prescription only diet. This means I can only get it from the vet.

He has now got back to his pre-illness weight and the vet has stopped the injections.

The prescription food is expensive but very concentrate. Both of mine have to eat it because I travel too often for them to always get fed separately ( they get a big bowl and eat when they like).

It hasn't actually turned out to be much more expensive than their old food.

Just make sure you order the biggest bag - 1.5k is around £17, 5k is £36.

Current plan of action - get him weighed in two weeks ........... two weeks after he goes in for the day to have a blood test and his blood pressure done ......... then we see how things are ......... in a four weeks he will probably get weighed again as well and the vets havent charged me for the food yet cos they believe the insurance company will pay for a year but have to make the decision about nuking him before then as the insurance will only pay for a year and up to £4000.00

Exactly my dilemma as well as we have two cats ........ but I have to make sure the other one has 1 teaspoon a day of normal food to keep her iodine levels up

My tuppenyworth,,which also happens to illustrate ones standpoint on said felines, is something I heard Sandi Toksvig relate (who shares my furry pussy sentiments) a while back, regarding a bumper sticker she saw whilst on holiday in our late colonies in the Americas. It read...

"So many cats...

I thank you.... meeeeeeeow!

12 years is a good age.

Is it worth to put it through all of that and not be sure of the outcome.

Is the vets suggestion putting them to sleep. The treatment is aggressive and the cat is allergic to the medicine.

No I don't hate cats

whilst i am an animal owner (2 cats) i am fairly level headed when it comes to their health.

i dont think it is nice to prolong their lives with endless medication. at the end of the day who are we prolonging their lives for? us.

having said that mines hav never had more than an abcess to deal with, i'll probably be a wreck if they really git ill and look like a right hypocryte

no we explored that avenue and were told categorically No ... cos thats what we thought - we are hoping he will start putting on weight and then hopefully the other issues will settle down ........ but he is going to have regular monitoring at the moment to see how we progress
