I'd go so far to say that EVERYONE who helps to keep a hospital up and running, from the Cleaners right up to the Consultants, deserves our respect.

Having worked for some time in a large London Hospital Pharmacy, I was constantly amazed at the hard work that goes into the everyday working of a hospital.

I know it makes me sound a bit 'Al Murray'....but it really does make me proud to be British when I see our Health Service.

To be fair, it's a job and a chosen profession, that people are paid to do.

I work very hard, under huge pressure and have a large amount of responsibility, but no posts saying well done etc!! I wouldn't want to be thanked and praised, I choose my profession, and I get paid for it.

As I said, its a reasonably well paid CHOOSEN profession. No need for thanks, nurses are only doing what they are paid to do, and that us look after and nurse the ill.

Just saying.

What a bizarre _iew. If a professional footballer scored a 40 yard volley, would you say well done? or nothing because that is what he is paid for?

Yes they empty bed pans, and perform brain surgery. But my point is they get PAID for it, and have chosen that profession.

My point is that everyone goes on about the angels and stars that work for the NHS, its a job they get paid for, and I think we are all to quick to assume that every nurse is worth their weight in gold.

They moan and bitch about pay and conditions all they time. They are well paid, have pretty secure jobs. There are far worse professions out there.

Those that do the above on a voluntary basis however deserve the credit and admiration. The Red Cross are a truly inspiring organisation.

Just saying

As a nurse I'm not interested in the chosen profession, paid for arguement because could go on for ever. But I'm sure anyone who made that career descision over 10 yrs ago no longer recognises it as a caring profession. The NHS is now run as a business, with targets to meet, budgets to reduce and legislation to meet.

And no longer provides job security. Saying that I still get some job satisfaction and it partly pays the bills X

there are good and not so good in all professions

the issues are 'do the good get the recognition they deserve' and are the 'not so good, helped &coached to improve performance and then if not at the level, the appropriate actions taken to release them'..

not always the case..

Clearly, as you can't answer any of the straight questions I have posed to you in this thread. It is you who doesn't understand.

Although you seem fairly capable of loading bullets.

The OP is thanking the nursing profession for the work they do. Regardless of whether they are employed to do it or not. I refer you to the football analogy further up the thread again. Would you say well done to a professional footballer for a brilliant goal? After all he is paid (considerably) to do so.

What about the care assistant who was fishing for a compliment?!

Don't recall being knocked back by a nurse, but who knows.

Absolutely nothing against nurses, I just think its unfair that they always receive recognition when many other, just as deserving professions don't.

I have indeed answered your direct questions.

In terms of the football analogy, i might say good goal, but not well done? Bit like an actor that plays a good part in a film, I would say good film or role.

My point again, as you clearly don't get it. I am not saying nurses don't do a good job, I am merely pointing out that lots of nurses moan about pay and conditions. It is their choice to enter the profession. Same as a footballer or a actor. All professions are paid to do the job they are employed to do.

Anyway, have a nice night love xx

the thread was started by someone praising 'nurses', not seen many of the nurses fishing for compliments at all..

been married to a nurse of 30+ years for 28 yrs, i would not do their job as many of them are of a much more caring disposition than i..

you seem incapable of just accepting that others feel gratefull and have said so..

the thread was not about pay and conditions and 'its just a job' till you started bleating and dragging it down imho..

your attitude is strangely at odds with your profile..

yes they can choose another job but they do it because they care, think theres a bit of a difference between a taxi driver and a nurse, they dont nurse someone and have them die in their arms, they didnt ask for the praise, someone just gave it.

South Devon

Medical professionals will always be regarded favourably because they have the power to effect the most precious thing we all have..our health.

The problem comes when we differentiate between perceiving them as purely altruistic, or as being paid for what they have trained and get paid for.

Do we think that consultants who work in both private and public health _iew their patients differently.

"To be fair, it's a job and a chosen profession, that people are paid to do.

Just saying. it goes well beyond on getting paid for what they do, yes its a chosen profession but they dont choose to be abused and taken for granted, and as for the pay its far from enough. just saying

Well... They could always get a job that pays better or less chance of abuse. As I said earlier, lots of professions in the same boat. Not many taxi drivers or bus drivers on here moaning about it though is there? yes they can choose another job but they do it because they care, think theres a bit of a difference between a taxi driver and a nurse, they dont nurse someone and have them die in their arms, they didnt ask for the praise, someone just gave it. "

Yes difference between a nurse and taxi driver is a fair point. However when a nurse enters the profession they must know that at somepoint someone will pass away in their care. The profession is an informed choice.

On that basis it is wrong to compare a taxi driver and a nurse.

"yes, I get paid...... £4.00 for a half hour call, makes you wonder whether going out in those condition is worth it, I had 8 calls to do, would usually get them done in the 4 hrs allocated but took 6 hrs yesterday, when I was trawlling through the heavy snow and getting to calls to find out nobody had been out to do the lunch calls when the weather wasn't as bad, made me wonder who the idiot was!"

same job as me - out for 10 hours a day most days for maybe 6 or 7 hours pay at best - not much above minimum wage but i love it - im doing this for experience whilst i qualify and hopefully get into a hospital position - heaps of job satisfaction here

Don't forget the 3 years and a BSc before you can earn 1p as a nurse

I for one would be lost without anyone from the medical profession, its a profession I have to deal with on an almost daily basis & yes I've encountered terrible staff as well as really good ones, but on a whole its a huge thank you from me.

My daughter is currently at Uni studying to be a nurse, she found it hard at first and struggled.

I chatted to some wonderful people on here who gave me some great advice to help her along and it worked.

little house on the praire

My dad was in the hospital for 10 days before he died. Those ten days went on for ever. He was in the intensive care unit. I cannot put into words what the staff where like. He had a nurse 24 hrs a day sitting with just him. So 24 hours aday over 10 days soon mounts up.

Every one was wonderful, from the cleaner upwards. The head consultant came in specially on new years day to tell us the news. His professionizem and compassion was second to none.

My dad had every latest technology as far as someone in his state could possibly have.

It was alll over christmas and new year, the staff where bloody fantastic considering they where working all christmas and new year.

Yes i thank all the emergency services, but over the last few weeks ive realized how wonderful they are and not for a split second did i doubt that they where just there for the money, they where all compassionate and dignified. Even he priest who was at home and travelled over an hour to give my dad his last rites.

Think its £280 that we recieved via donatins for glenfield icu

Blimey you lot, that's some heaving reading!!! Lol

I'm in social work and feel this is often a profession that gets a lot of grief! I love my job and wouldn't change it for anything, well I would the red tape and rules that stop us doing the job in a much more proactive way! Health and social care are a million miles apart sometimes in our approach but I'm sure the majority of professionals work towards the same goal.

So 3 cheers to all jobs and people that do things everyday that others wouldn't alway choose, from bin men to bus drivers and all in between!...

"hear hear! I chose to enter nursing but every single day I witness people staying on late and working through breaks..all unpaid and with no bosses who ever recognise anyones individual contributions.

Welcome to the real world. Most people I know work longer, harder and receive no bonus or credit. That's the real world for you!

To Many people aboard the Nhs Gravy train. "

You are an idiot, I will guarantee that 'most' people you know DO NOT work 13-14 hour days often with no breaks, how do you know how hard the average nurse works?

The 'NHS gravy train' as you call it was ended years ago around the time efficiency savings were put in place. I'm not a nurse but do know a lot about their jobs!

Just saying

You have that same _iew about soldiers too then? There's is a paid for profession

Not all soldiers, just the ones who moan about going to war. What the hell did they sign up for?!

The same can be said for all professions. The vast majority get on with the job in hand. It's the ones who moan about it that need to take a reality check "

I agree with you about folk who moan about doing a job they chose to do.

But think the op was more saluting those who do the job and don't moan. Although think us working nation moan about our jobs all the time x
