This is the answer.

Only managed to listen to pop master once since Ken moved to greatest hits and I can’t cope with ten to the top on radio 2

I know but the OP said bin it and go back to FM. Every DAB radio I’ve ever seen can be switched back to FM.

I think that they expect people to use their phones to stream radio on their car stereos, but I've found that isn't much more reliable... especially in when driving any distance.

Farnborough Hampshire

dab radio is localised not national.

so when you travel around the country you will lose stations, there connections and gain others in the locality.

you cannot get radio scotland on a dab radio if you live in aldershot etc.

the only radio which does not operate like this is an internet radio. but this requires a good connection to wifi.

with that you can scan stations all over the world and if they are permitted to broadcast outside of their locality you will be able to listen to them.

its worth noting the bbc is changing the way it broadcasts radio so internet radios soon will not obtain their stations. you will have to use a local dab or website.

Agree that DAB is rubbish.

Use Spotify instead (or similar)

This

Slowly just gave up on it as the waffling idiots and SJW's took over- just bought a 128gig memory stick which should hold several hundred hours worth of music with no idiot presenters to be found

Have my DAB wireless at home and it’s great, mainly listen to R4 and 4Extra. I got it specifically for 4Extra, brilliant broadcast.

Only if you've been on the radio.

I have a few times. Halfwit may be accurate.

West Midlands

I have very few issues at all with DAB in my current car, it is 90% tuned to 6 Music though and the BBC stations seem to be more reliable reception wise.

I spent ages trying to troubleshoot the crap DAB in my last car until I realised that it was the cheapo dashcam that was interfering with the signal.

Bluetooth + Streaming (or ripped tunes) = No ads and no repeats and no station tags or all the other annoying filler.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe

I must be a full-wit then, as I've been presenting radio shows for almost 20 years. I play very few mainstream songs, mainly new music, and up-and-coming unsigned musicians. I do try not to waffle crap, though, but do have guest musicians in the studio.

Not on DAB, though. The costs to join a local DAB multiplex are prohibitive. Made do with FM and internet streaming.

That's one of the things I hate the most. The ridiculous accents on it!

That and all the people they invite to debate topics who pronounce the word 'issue' as 'issyou'.

I like Alfie the ex-copper though.

DAB depends on the transmitter. In the south i don't get some stations that are further north because they're not on the DAB spectrum down here. Easiest is to just Bluetooth your phone to the radio if you can and stream whatever station you want.

Is it still crap?

I remember when the gov first sold the idea they got people like French and Saunders to say how "fantastic" it sounded - but in general it didn't. A lot of stations could only afford lower the bitrates (I think even the hole bandwidth was limited at the time), so most of the time it sounded a lot lot worse than analogue! And of course it would cut out. I imagine that only Radio One had the highest available bitrate at first. Maybe Classic FM?

The gov targetted a lot of older people too, which I didn't like it all. The promotion of digital reminded me of Thatcher's selling of nuclear - it really was a whole concept (or 'age') that they were flogging. In Thatcher's case the modern mobile nuclear family (over the more traditional settled and larger 'extended' one), modern power (specifically over coal but early turbines too) and a 'modernised' new epoch (of unregulated capitalism essentially). With digital they new what was predicted in terms of transmission, eg technology, the internet, media and TV.

Is this not why dab+ has been invented?

I’ve not had 1 flat spot on any channels I’ve not lost any reception in any area ever

But in defence my main travelling is on the m1 m25 corridors and south and east coasts but still never lost signal once

The one thing I do notice is channels do appear and disappear with different county’s

But then it just clicks onto best reception for channel I am listening to

for a penny

I mostly listen to 4 Extra on DAB so don’t have a problem.

Incidentally, I haven’t seen it referred to as DAB in a while. It’s usually Digital.
