I have a phobia of the dentist. Goes back to when I was nowt but a lad when one hurt my mouth. I have to be knocked out when I go.

Do you fear the buzz of the drill? Those god damn mini hoovers in your mouth? The pick things they use to get to your tiny bits of toast you left behind? Please tell me I'm not alone

I’ve never had a filling or anything other than a scale and polish so I don’t fear them. I don’t think I’d be too fond of them if I ever needed a tooth pulled

I am terrified.

I had a very traumatic experience as a young boy with a very elderly dentist in the 1970s who shouldn't have been practicing dentistry anymore.

Left me traumatised.

Fast forward to tail end of last year had to have an extraction that left me bruised and battered and ended up with a dry socket.

My experiences are not improving.

I had a major phobia for years, so much so did not go for ten years. Found a local one who could deal with nervous patients but when time came for next check up I bottled it.

Couple of years later went back and not missed an appointment since but still dread them.

Worry about the appointment for couple of weeks before it and at times wonder why I put myself through it. Esp with my mh, why I care about the state of my teeth but it's one of my little victories.

Up My Own Arse Apparently

Used to be terrified after a negative experience as a kid.

However after developing an abcess when I was pregnant, I could have kissed the dentist when he drilled into my tooth and the pain was instantly relieved. I just go and get on with it now.

If you grew up in the 70s, they got paid per filling or extraction. I got some teeth extracted when I was about 4. Terribly ill and so sore afterwards. That traumatic, I remember it like it was yesterday

My phobia is different - Needles. I get panic attack minutes after I get an injection. Just like you are scared of dentists, I am scared of doctors. It's just something we have to live with, I guess.

In your case, you could do one visit to knock of all the teeth and replace them with gold teeth. Then you are done for your life

I cant stand them. I look after my teeth very well, to avoid going to a dentist. My problem is the full legal amount of anaesthetic wont numb me. I discovered this while having mercury fillings removed last time. The pain, noise, drilling was unbearable.

More seriously / helpfully, I hate the dentist too. A couple of tips.

Headphones and loud music works for me. Still not fun but bearable

I know someone who gets a little something from their GP to help. If your fear is that significant, try this.

Haha I'm the exact opposite. That's probably just because I'm a transhumanist though. The thought of being operated on fills me with joy. I remember when I was young I loved being under local anaesthetic because it meant I could see the doctors working on me. Dentists are even better because that feeling of the drills vibrating is amazing!

I levitate off the chair, shaking with fear.. I have to keep reassuring my dentist to do whatever he is doing. My mum used to stand at the end of the chair when I was a kid and flinch and draw her breath

we talked about it one day and she had no idea.. She was also terrified of the dentist and wanted me to see there was nothing to worry about

I terrified a waiting room full of people one day by stumbling in with blood and drool oozing down my chin after having ailk tooth pulled out for some reason and then fainting in front of them

I have a phobia of them caused by a bad dentist as a child. I remember my mouth being clamped open and it hurt like a git when he pulled them.

theres been an odd one thats been great listened to what ive said to them, the best was a lady listened tested reinjected then pulled.

i saw stars tooth shatered its inside the gum still to be pulled, she pulled another one and had no problem getting it.

Ive been asaulted by a dentist though he rammed that spike right up inside of the tooth infront of my children, ive got a brave face on just for them.

It didnt stop me going up the chair, im strong so pushed out of the chair.

Refused to have it done asked for the dentist name at reception, written on a piece of paper made it clear id been assaulted.

made an official complaint with the dentist hotline number

The lady dentist pulled the same tooth out.

I was more worried about the children as i really didnt want to scare them for there dentist trips.

Seeing there parent go up the chair in sever pain caused by the dentist is not the best sight to see.

Me too, my childhood dentist was a butcher. Later when I was an adult, he was arrested from defrauding the government by pulling teeth or doing fillings to nhs patients that didn’t need it.

I am now almost complete with having 3 implants to replace 5 teeth.

I was fine until I needed work on teeth in my bottom jaw. The anaesthetic just doesn’t seem to work as well so there is an element of having to put up with pain. Makes me reticent to go

Makes me so sad to hear all of your stories. I work in the dental profession (without totally outing myself on here).

I have to agree that there are so dentists who do not have the best chairside manner. Working in the NHS is highly time managed and therefore they do not have the time to put in the care that is needed with nervous patients.

The cost is high, but if you find a private dentist they will have all the time in the world to try and make you feel at ease. Just be honest with them about how nervous you are.

Despite what people think, we do not want to hurt you, we derive no pleasure from that at all!

The best thing is to go regularly so that problems are found soon when they are small and easy to fix, rather than leaving it til it is a massive problem and having to be fitted in as an emergency.

Had a phobia of the dentist since childhood, back in the day dentistry was shockingly bad. Always had to have sedation.

An abscess followed by a visit to the emergency dentist cured my of that as I was in soooooo much pain I couldn’t have cared less how they stopped it hurting, and believe me it was brutal but nothing compared to the abscess…..!!

Not a fan of the Dentist...only had 2 teeth removed as an adult, 1 wisdom tooth at the Hospital totally asleep for it. The second at my Dentist with just the numbing injection...Never again...the injection in the roof of my mouth was horrendous...then the pulling and hearing the cracking sound of the tooth...EEEWWW...traumatized me for weeks...

My dentist has a note that I'm a 'gag patient' he takes account of that, is as quick as possible and removed his fingers and instruments from my mouth as soon as he sees me gag, waits and then continues. Knowing that he'll do this puts me at ease and removes some of the stress. Speak to your dentist and the dental nurse

Dentist phobic for years- since one sadist ripped a wisdom tooth out despite me saying it wasn't numb (he was a proper bastard) - and that was after he'd spent 3.5 years telling me it was period pain!!!!

Didn't go to a dentist from 19 til I was 30.

Had sedation 3 times - 1st time fine, 2nd time sick as a dog - 3rd time they brought me back round untreated as I was threatening to lamp the condescending bitch (I have zero memory of this but do remember thinking I wish I could get away with violence as they were putting me under

That said, I'm now a mum and the last thing I want is my Small being afraid - SO I Don my big girl pants and go first everytime and she's watched me have a filling and a tooth out

I went private, paid a fortune and was sedated but it was totally worth every penny. One second they was putting the needle in my hand, next thing I was done.. amazing stuff sedation!

I agree if you can afford private dentistry it's preferable but it is very expensive. We had no choice, NHS dentists round here aren't taking on new patients

I used to enjoy going to the dentist when I was younger but now I'm older I hate it.

I think I just don't like people being so close to my face and the fear of my jaw locking or something falling down my throat.

I had wisdom teeth removed a few months ago and was sedated for that..
