"Get off me, your fat.

I think that is missing the idiomatic subtleties I would expect.

I wouldn't say your ugly but the tide wouldn't take you out. Although I'm having a good time tonight thanks! I can be a bit heavy handed with the compliments at times.

My ex hubby misses my mushroom risotto more than he misses me, and I take that as a compliment about my cooking.

"is this like a back handed compliment?"

sort of, it's when someone seems to give you a compliment that turns out to be anything but.

"is this like a back handed compliment?

like 'you dont sweat much for a fat lass'

or....'you've got quite skinny hips from this angle'

or....'you'd be quite pretty if you were skinny'

It's the comments you might make when you are trying to be polite: "I can verify that this man is indeed human."

I love backhanded compliments- or whatever they can be called. They make me laugh. My bloke understands too which is brilliant. He might say something like "you're the best shag I've had this afternoon."

My boss once put on my performance review 'she is not intimidated by the customers and likes to speak her mind', which I suspect meant 'is a bolshy bird'.

One of my favourites, still, is John Gielgud playing the valet in 'Arthur' when Dudley Moore introduces him to his latest 'dumb blonde' describing her in glowing terms way above her apparent IQ level.

Gielgud's response is....

"Indeed Sir, I await her next syllable with interest....."

I'd forgotten that one.

I had someone tell me that I would be a better shag if I were less intelligent.

Had that one.

You look like a fat not as pretty Nessa (frim gavin n stacey, when my hair was black)

If you were thin you'd make a good WAG (they were from my sisters)

A recent one was, you look big n strong, not wobbly

The first comment I might be annoyed at.

But the second comment about the other woman being high maintenance but being able to chill with you... I think that's a compliment. He's saying you're not stuck up, you're down to earth, maybe one of the boys, someone he'd want to chill out with. I'd be happy with that.

I guess I must think like men then because I don't know why anyone would be annoyed by that...?
