"Elton John- attention seeking old drama queen " Yes he is, but still he’s fundamentally a terrific musician. One of the few pop artists who’s enjoyed the benefit of gaining a solid classical piano technique at conservatoire level. It has served him well and instantly puts him head and shoulders above most others, including those, like Mika, who bailed out of conservatoire early and never properly finished their training.

"On the Adele question, here’s a great example. Listen to her singing live on Ellen. A nice, simple, well-played piano accompaniment but Adele’s frequently out of tune and often with strange choices of vowel sound which many other singers would avoid. Her closing up on a very tight ‘oo’ sound on ‘You’ is just one example. https://youtu.be/G5pBU4UhgFk Now, hear that same downbeat song, which frankly I find dull and boring, reimagined live by Bruno Mars and his team of phenomenal musicians. Damn, what a difference! It’s not just the extra instruments that make a difference, it’s what they do - the richness of the harmonies, Mars’s perfectly judged melodic decoration, the flawless ensemble and the richness of musical imagination which transforms this from a dull, average song relying on basic root position chords into an engaging song full of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic diversity and energy. https://youtu.be/oCtYekG1qBc" -You do realise that you've just explained how good one of her songs actually is? pt

"Kim Wyld , very attractive young woman ( in the early eighties) but couldn’t sing for shit. Live or on record? Because “Kids in America” is a classic! Both really. I bought Kids in America, as a spotty teen, but only cause I fancied the pants off her, vocally it was quite weak. Good tune but her vocal , on reflection, wasn’t that great. " Shame that - she’s touring again I hear.
