"Reports that this baby food is getting so expensive that some parents are stealing it just to feed their babies.. Is Britain broken or is Brexit to blame? " Baby formula has been a go to for shoplifters for years, Junkies often steal it to sell off for a fix, in the full knowledge that if they are caught they can claim to have a hungry baby at home.

This. Many outings pushing my son in his buggie 20+yrs ago would involve impromptu pitches of want nappies/milk/baby rice/washing powder- saved me a fortune!

There is no political entity entity called Britain. The UK cannot survive. I hope the Irish get to smash it first. They deserve it.

So much, if you see some taking things, no you didn’t If it’s a big company trying to rinse every penny from customers and staff alike, they can clearly afford it Not only afford it, but given the state of shrinkflation these days, they damn deserve it Imagine if we all collectively refused to pay, they couldn’t stop everyone and the prices would fall for the first time in history

So yep, on my own in London that's an impossible situation. Circumstances can change out of your control. Can't believe an adult would need this explaining to them

Wether companies like it or not It’s a situation created by the companies, they fucked around, they’re finding out We civilians are simply navigating this shit show

"Parents responsible should always manage to havw enough money for their childs milk and basic necessities. If in some harsh circumstances the system doesnt provide then its only fair for the parents to take from these billion pound industries. They won't feel it. But come on guys it might be harsh a child is your responsibility if we have made the conscious decision of having a baby then we should be able to provide his food atleast. Sorry if i have offended anyone" Do you understand the concept of circumstances changing? Such as redundancy? Or ill health stopping a parent working? Nurseries are closing down at an alarming rate, etc. One near us closed overnight. One day, parents had childcare, the next, they did not. Not the parent's fault. Etc. Get with the real world!

"Don’t have kids then if you can’t afford it. " This is a troll? Surely, no-one is this dense accidentally, right? There are no "jobs for life" anymore, this cost of living buckshot is accelerating faster than wages can or will keep up. This person may have been lucky to have ridden the storm, and well done if you did, but that makes you the exception, rather than the rule. As someone else said, you can't just move them on via a car boot sale if you find yourself not able to provide as well as you could...

Is baby food really for the less well off in society? Always thought it was overpriced crap. Think people need to go back to the days of cooking basic meals and puree /mash it. What happened to feeding your child the same meal you have? It's more economical and nutritional. " The OP seems to be conflating infant formula milk and baby food. I agree jars of baby food are unnecessary generally, but if that's what you can get from a food bank? Re: infant formula. I am a massive advocate of breastfeeding. I "failed" at breastfeeding my son, when I was a 16yo teenage parent so used formula. I didn't want to, but I didn't have the support or knowledge at the time. I started breastfeeding my daughter who is now 6. I acquired a disability during the pregnancy. At 4 days old, I was told to take a particular medication, to alleviate the excruciating pain I was in. I was told that if I took it and breastfed, my daughter would die. So I stopped and started using formula. I cried incessantly because I felt like a complete failure. Once home from hospital and having reacquired the ability to think straight, I used my biological science education to research the drug. I contacted expert pharmacists and helplines normally only used by medical professionals. I argued with health visitors and after a huge amount of detailed research and paying for a private lactation consultant, I started the (very hard) job of relactating. This basically entailed being attached to a hospital grade pump every 2-3hrs for about 30min each time, whilst trying to make a hungry baby latch on before and after. This included overnight. I was, remember, disabled. I couldn't walk on my own, pick her up myself or do anything independently. I relied on Mr KC, who had 2wk paternity leave and was working FT as a college lecturer. Four weeks of being a dairy cow resulted in getting my milk back. We ditched formula and didn't use it ever again. I went back to work, hospital grade pump in tow, when my daughter was 4 months old and pumped 3-4 times a day. She was fed expressed milk plus breastfeeding when we were together. She carried on with some amount of BF until she was 3 and I got nursing aversion. The moral of the story? It's fucking hard work and lots of people find breastfeeding too difficult. There's not enough support. The NHS was quite satisfied for me just to stop and use formula, there was no consideration of whether it would be financially viable. There was very limited NHS support to relactate and in fact, most health professionals we encountered were astonished that I was breastfeeding. So, I massively advocate breastfeeding BUT I'm well aware how hard it can be and until there is better support, lots of people will need to rely on formula. Whether we think that's good, bad or indifferent really doesn't matter. It's a fact and we can't have babies going hungry.

However, he did have to have formula as he was a prem baby born at 32 weeks and hadn't gained the sucking motion so had to be tube fed. By the time he came of the tube my milk had dried up so had to go on the bottle. I carried guilt around for 20 years because I'd been unable to breast feed him

I totally understand the need for formula milk (I couldn't BF for the same reasons). People who can't BF should never feel guilty. Do they still do healthy start vouchers until 5 years old for low income families?

Obviously breastfeeding beyond one year is normal and fine but 1yr is recommended min. What is absolutely not needed and is a total scandal, is follow-on milk. Regular stage 1 infant formula can be used for the first year, then full fat dairy milk or appropriately fortified non dairy alternatives. Absolutely zero need for follow-on, it's expensive and aggressively marketed to inflate profits at formula companies.
