Love this series. I bought the first five books over 30 years ago, in a junk shop. Collected the rest soon after.

Discovered the first book in a bookshop in Japan just after I started as cabin crew. They had very few books in English and it looked my sort of book. Absolutely loved it and read all of them.

I'm currently rereading the Mallorean as we speak

Good evening OP!

My sisters, my friends and I read all the books whilst at school. As my older sisters bought all the books, I didn't have to - but I did it anyway. I wanted my own dog eared copies and still have them today. Mostly bought new as I lacked patience with finding second hand copies in shops back then.

We all loved the Belgariad and the Mallorean. Although the Belgariad was the better of the two.

My school friends started calling me Silk as, according to them, I had the same sarcastic sense of humour. I also have the right colour hair. They still call me Silk even now but I don't think I'm such a sarky so and so.

They also claimed I looked like a cross between a rat and a weasel.

I liked the Sparhawk books - The Elenium and The Tamuli

But I didn't really like The Dreamers. Too complicated but also predictable.

Hey everyone has their own taste. You might like them. But I'd go for Elenium + Tamuli 1st if you've not read them.

Steer towards the Sparhawk ones, steer away from the Dreamers (think the book titles are The Elder Gods and The Younger Gods)

I never read the Dreamers. After reading the Elenium and Tamuli, whilst I enjoyed them, I felt disappointed with how many characters seemed to echo ones in the Belgariad and Mallorean and I didn't want to keep reading variations of the same characters. I might try reading the Dreamers one day.

Eddings did seem to recycle his own work a lot. Especially over time.

So have readers found other series or stories with the same sort of likeable ensemble cast? There's an unfinished series I can't bring myself to recommend much as I love it (not Game of Thrones)

Quite a few years back, I became a big fan of the Heralds of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey.

I currently very much enjoy the Bewitched & Bewildered series by Alanea Alder although there's a lot more romance in that series. However, there's several books left to be written/published in that series.

I like Mercedes Lackey. And I like romance so that's not a deal breaker in any way.

The books are The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. They are among my favourite books ever which is why I'm so reluctant to recommend as everyone I've told has also loved them and is in the same desperate boat waiting for the final book. It has been years!

Ilona Andrews and Shannon Mayer are good but more on the sci-fi and shifter side of fantasy. Also Sarah J Maas.

I've read everything by Patricia Briggs - the Alpha and Omega series is linked to the Mercy Thompson books. So I'll definitely check out the Jacky Leon books

Oh yes, I forgot about the Alpha and Omega books - I have read them too. They're good, I do enjoy them and have re-read but I prefer Mercy Thompson.

I think you'll also like books by Anne Bishop - the Black Jewels series (which has a sequel that I can't recall the name of), the Courtyard of the Others series and World of the Others.

Possibly also Brogan Thomas' books. I loved (and cried through) the first two books of her Creatures of the Otherworld series. The 3rd and 4th books were ok. She's started a sequel series which so far I love.
