I’d only promise to meet up if I intended to meet them. If I felt anxious, please please tell them and then they can prepare for you changing your mind. There’s nothing worse than looking forward to meeting someone, and then they don’t follow through and yet you’ve gone all the way.

loads of people do that and so it is normal. People should cancel if they get nervous. Been to 2 meets with no show and no apology from them

Why don’t you try arranging a video call first? Far less pressure to make small talk and doesn’t have to last long.
