as a saints fan , i thought adkins has done a great job at saints and feelthe chairman is a twofaced snidy git . only the fans truly know the value of a great manager .

what were they thinking at southampton .they were allways going to struggle in the top flight but had a decent chance to stay up.absolute madness to sack the manager but its how clubs are run today

I reckon the surge of form from QPR may well be a pointer here. They were pretty much seen as certs so the Saints had to fight o clear the other two spots.

Sad day again for modern football.

He did a great job in difficult circumstances to start with and has given them every chance of staying up playing attacking football which the fans i presume love.

Football, be it playing or running a club is all about decision making and i feel the southampton chairman has just made the equivalant of a blind backpass that goes straight to mr messi....

When you have a huge pile of cash invested in a club and know the intricacies of the day to day running of it then maybe you'll have earned the right to pick the best options to protect your investment. Being a fan does not give you a behind the scenes close up of the true picture so instead of moaning about the outgoing manager why not get behind the new one. If you are a true fan.

I think its a shame, he has done a great job at the club. There's obviously alot more to it behind the scenes. Hope he gets a new position soon.

I understand what you are saying but near enough 0% of chairmen know anything about the actual football side of things...see blackburn, chelsea for examples.....

I think sacking Adkins now for a foreign manager with no experience in England mid-season is a big risk.

Surely Adkins earned the right to finish the season for the two promotions he achieved with Southampton?

It's the worse decision I've seen at the club in all the time I've been following them (and that includes everything Rupert Lowe did). Nige had the team playing attractive football, we had turned a corner in terms of results, and were tightening up the defence. I've been a big fan of Cortese thus far, but this totally shakes that, and even my support of the Saints, which I thought would never happen.

Whichever club Nigel goes to next will have bagged themselves a great manager, and I will follow his career with great respect and interest.

They are businessmen though. They know how a company shouldn't be run and in the case of a football team they have to protect the future performance of the team by not sacrificing it's best players if they can avoid it and indeed buying new ones to give the team fresh impetus, but, changes have to be made and if the manager isn't getting the players working together as a team then the manager has to be changed. Southampton are in dire trouble along with QPR, Reading, Villa and Newcastle. I think I can predict who's going down out of those five clubs.

I was starting to warm to Nigel Adkins (after the 2010-11 season when Brighton were champions of League One and Saints runners-up) and thought he was doing a great job after a shaky start in the Premiership. It is a huge risk to start an unknown at this stage of the season especially when the results have been very positive. He has no experience in England and I just heard an interview on the radio where he had an interpreter. I did wonder prior to hearing that if he could communicate in English. Still there's always Gaston Ramirez. Watch this space.

Whos to say he wasnt getting best out of his players...

Many of them have played champioship or league 1 football do to have tjem competing pretty well in the greedy league is a fair achivement if you ask me...

And the decision to do it half way through january means the chairman will have to spend over the odds on new players to appease the new manager or its a waist of time sacking adkins if they dont buy anyone.....

Thought he was doing a good job, but no loyalty in Football. We got your last manager after one of ours (Huyton) was also sacked after bringing us back from the Championship. Very controvertial at the time but Pardew won the fans over and once all our injuries clear up we will be fine.

you're talking crap , saints unbeaten in five games and to come back from 2-0 down to get a draw away from home at the current euro champions, like every true fan , iwill get behinnd the TEAM NOT THE CHAIRMAN , i will support the team like a true fan . and as for your predictions , go ahead and put your money where your mouth is!! i think thees more teams going to be sucked in to the relagation fight than those five

Shocking decision. Chairman was clearly looking to get rid so they could bring someone new in for January and give them some cash.

Form really turned around and the window of opportunity was lost so they sacked him anyway.

Southampton fans were singing 'you're getting sacked in the morning' at Chelsea on Weds.

Unbeaten in 5 games maybe (apart from the 5-1 mauling by Chelsea in the cup) but 4 of those league games were draws. 40 points total for the season will ensure Premiership football next season. They'll need 21pts out of a possible 48 available to hit that mark. I'm not convinced they can do it.

They have 22 points currently - so 18 points to earn by your reckoning.
