We all do, at some point or another.

I know this has been done before but why would you lie about something, big or small?

I never lie about anything important. I engage in what I like to call 'recreational lying', but never for any personal gain.

Your right in that we do so, usually 'little white lies'..

maybe some get so tied up in deception once they start something, then they feel they cant opt out by telling the truth..

Serious response now:

Everybody Lies. Its a universal truth.

We lie to ourselves, to protect our egos, to preserve our sanity, to justify the things we do or to silence our consciences.

We lie to others, to protect them from themselves, to offer solace, to protect their ego or sense of self or to get what what we want.

Lies are subjective in their motives, their meanings and their magnitude.

Everybody lies. If you say you don't, you're simply lying to yourself.

It's the lies we tell ourselves that has me thinking of this. The clips being shown on the Lance Armstrong inter_iew looked, to me, as though he had constructed a rationalisation that he wholly believes.

Lying to cause other people problems, or to encourage people to do things they wouldn't otherwise do, is past the line. I only tell lies that won't influence anyone's behaviour.

Let me clarify. If I tell a woman I've got a 14-inch salami packed away in my boxers, there's a small chance I might dishonestly affect her decision whether to lower her own underwear. And hence it's not something I'd lie about. If on the other hand I tell someone that, say, David and Victoria Beckham have bought a house in Loughborough, they're not likely to do much beyond calling me a liar. And that's where the web begins.

I don't lie about things that matter, ever. Lying gets you found out.

By making random oriental sounds. I once convinced a bunch of work colleagues I could speak fluent Japanese….

It depends what the information is and the purpose. Protecting your privacy can be seen as fine but if you are concealing a transmittable disease was that omission any less serious than lying and saying there is no disease? It's an extreme example. The other is the thread the other week about the woman saying she was on the pill before sex and then admitting she wasn't in the morning.

Exactly. If you do it to everyone, nobody ever believes a word you say. I only do it to two or three people, and I always ultimately confess to lying. If I'm talking to someone new, stringing together an elaborate lie is a complete waste of time and effort. I like to build new friendships on complete honesty

I dont like lies and the only time I feel it is ok is when it is for the (genuine) benefit of another person.

Like so many things in life, there is a vast array of grey shades between black and white and I can think of situations (eg when giving a patient a terminal diagnosis) where lying or modifying the truth to protect the patient would be ok in my books.

I agree that there are more shades of grey than that book would suggest when it comes to truth and lies. That said, one person's grey area is clearly black/white for another. If I were your terminal patient I would want all of the information as plainly as possible.

In my opinion when you start a lie, if it is something that is for someone else's benefit such as 'no your arse is not the size of a mountain as she already has an issue with said arse' that can be ok...if it is for YOUR benefit 'of course I am single (because he will get a shag if he tells her that) then that's wrong...Generally...I know there will be exceptions...

"We all do, at some point or another.

I know this has been done before but why would you lie about something, big or small?

I never lie about anything important. I engage in what I like to call 'recreational lying', but never for any personal gain.

Where is the line?

In my opinion when you start a lie, if it is something that is for someone else's benefit such as 'no your arse is not the size of a mountain as she already has an issue with said arse' that can be ok...if it is for YOUR benefit 'of course I am single (because he will get a shag if he tells her that) then that's wrong...Generally...I know there will be exceptions..."

Spot on... the difference lies in who benefits.

Agree with Lickety that I would want to know the whole truth in case of illness but I am aware of some people including friends who are better off not knowing tall the details. Guess it needs to be weighed up carefully.

Yes, it's just so satisfying watching my neighbours becoming more and more irate at the sight of these two uber camp snowmen proudly displaying their huge vegetable appendages towards one-another….!.

Would the person with the fat arse agree with you if she felt you had lied to her and let her go out in public?

You could say that skirt or whatever don't suit you...you don't have to be offensive to be honest and truthful!!
