"Fucking hell! Who feeds their dog raw pheasant dog food? That's a pretty niche product I'd guess? We steer well clear of Wagg (the turkey twizzler of the dog food world) and ours get a good brand but how posh do you have to be to feed Fido raw pheasant? A" My old lab used to have raw pheasant far more regularly than I would have expected... partly because he was a scavenging fecker and would dig dead ones from hedges on walks and partly because the pet mince I get from the butcher has all sorts in it... mostly just the 'not for human consumption' but sometimes he throws really random meat that isn't selling in there to bulk it out. One month the delivery had ostrich and kangaroo in there...

I know plenty of horse owners where instead of cremation their departed nags go to feed gun dogs, so yes, all manner of meat goes in food. I read the article Tom is referring to and it specifically mentions minced raw pheasant as a standalone meal. Apparently because its minced it means shot can disintegrate and blend with the meat, whereas pheasants that have been shot that people eat isn't minced. Never seen it sold as a raw feed on its own but apparently that's a thing! A

"I think you will find that lead shot is being phased out and being replaced by non toxic loads, so dogs will soon be free of lead poisoning, problem is that non toxic isn't as good as lead for a clean kill due to the density, and so a lot of the birds will not die instantly and die a lingering death " There is a proposal to phase out lead for shooting purposes, not just shot, but also rifle ammunition, within the next 4 years I think it is, but it is only a voluntary thing, at the moment anyway. As you quite rightly say, non toxic shot doesn't have the same impact power (with a few exceptions, Tungsten and Hevi Shot being two). With steel shot, it's always been advisable to go at least 2 sizes bigger to achieve the same impact power. Non toxic shot is horrendously expensive compared to lead shot, and with the stocks of lead shot cartridges already in existence, unless it becomes a compulsory ban, I can't see it happening. Going back on thread, I wouldn't feed my dogs raw game bird meat, not so much because of lead fragments but if a piece of lead shot is going to fragment, then it's because it's hit bone, so think of the fragments of bone they'd be eating! Lead would pass through them (it certainly does me), not so sure about sharp bone fragments! Plus, they have their balanced all in one food....and I like to eat the contents of my freezer!
