Pulling this from what was brought up in another discussion..

How do you define what a gentleman is?

Is there a code/rulebook to follow?

what attitudes, actions and behaviours brings you to think of that person as such?

That makes you a gentleman.

Everything mentioned above with the caveat that a gentleman doesn't have to tell anyone that he is one.

In doing so he is obviously presenting a different image and as such needs to reinforce in people's minds that he is indeed a gentleman rather than allow his actions to speak for themselves.

Decent manners and treating others good. I’ve met people who look like rogues yet were absolute gentlemen and people that looked like gentlemen who were utter fucking shitbags.

La la land

A list of things a man should be doesn't make them a gentleman. I've seen my grandad covered in cow poo and god knows what else and he had manners and kindness etc. But I doubt anyone would have said he was gentleman

So to me I guess it means someone with old fashioned manners and isn't a scruff bag.

How's a gentleman different to a lady (and I don't mean appendages or chromosomes).

Surely being kind/nice/decent etc are simply positive human traits?

Yes, I am that person with XX chromosomes who doesn't want anyone (gender irrelevant) to open doors, bring my coat, pull out a chair or anything else, unless they'd equally do it for one of their male amigos.

But that's just me (and yes, I'll hold doors open for people, but any person. I don't distinguish by gender, age etc).

Good stuff. I've never seen a guy offer to pull their mate's chair out at dinner, unless it's to pull a practical joke. Nor help with coats, unless it's their elderly father or something.

Basically, I prefer to do things for myself and if I really need help, e.g. move something in a café because my wheelchair won't fit, then I'll ask someone, politely

Mayfair

A barrow boy or a rag n' bone man can be a gentleman.

Being a gentleman is a matter of choice. Politeness, civility, patience and kindness above all else.

A man will hold back his tears for the sake of bravado; a gentleman isn't afraid to cry.

Is it about being a differentiator? A man assumes he knows where the clitoris is; a gentleman isn't ashamed to ask.

A gentleman will give with no expectation of anything in return. For example: he will carefully hold back her perfectly coiffured hair as she throws up following a night of over-indulgence.

He may even instinctively drop to the floor to locate her missing earring.

There is no right or wrong answer. On this Fab fora only the women can (mostly) gauge which one of us is a Gentleman by the way we conduct ourselves on here.

Clean, smells nice and well dressed.

Presentable - beard trimmed or clean shaven depending on preference. Hair styled nicely.

Talks without swearing every other word (I talk without swearing unless around friends , was a strict upbringing)

Chivalrous- opens doors for you, pulls chair out for you etc.

The biggest one by far - treats everyone with respect and how the gentlemen would like to be treated .

There’s probably more to it but that’s what I think a gentleman is.

Please don’t shoot me for my opinion!

The only boots that a gentleman should wear are white, black or green. White for cricket, black for riding or green wellies.
