" I don't think it does make them think twice though; if it did, there would barely be any violent crime in the US - sadly thats not the case. Agree though, our justice system is a joke in comparison

No tv's in your cells, just a concrete room with bed, toilet and sink. 1 hour of yard time a day. We're to soft in this country

"How many people would think twice of commiting a serious crime if they knew they'd be looking at 50/100+ years or even death row" It might indeed make them think twice, but the American correctional facilities/penatentiaries are still pretty busy as far as I'm aware

Don't know if you guys watch the news, but they have serious problems with crime and life sentences and death peanalties are not solving it. What does that suggest ?

A cinema, 3* meals, £140,000 state of the art gym. Sounds more like a luxury hotel than a prison.

As I said, I dunno where the truth lies but it occurs to me the $2.5 million will be spread over maybe 40 or 50 years whilst the $5 million might be over a much shorter term..

"Spend some time in Britain's prisons, speak to people that have been in prison, then see if your opinion about how easy or nice it is changes. We have a justice system based on rehabilitation and in the majority of cases it works and needs no changes...and social care professionals work damn hard to make sure it works. I'm sure a lot of you have the same opinion of the homeless too...you wouldn't believe him many 'Professional' homeless people there are. "

I know a few lads from my past who are happy to be sent down over & over because they get a gym and tv and play stations. It doesn't faze them. I'm not saying it's the same for everyone but some are just not bothered about doing time.

Most people, when about to commit a crime, don't even consider the possibility they'll be caught.

The bill for incarceration also means jobs for prison officers etc so adding to the local economy, execution means the lawyers get most of the money.

" I don't know what the solution is but but treating offenders worse than animals isn't the solution. Abusing offenders might make some people feel better but people with that outlook tend to scare me more than the offenders." A few years back there was a show presented by Michael Portillo, which he look at the best way to execute people, which was quick and pain free.. it was found that using a nitrogen filled room the person would die quickly without pain, in fact it is deemed a euphoric death. But when they asked the lawmakers in the USA about the idea they sad they wanted the execution to be a long and painful death and they would never us a system like this as they wanted revenge...America what a lovely place!
