I'm absolutely gutted!

Was also gutted when Amy Winehouse died.

Robin Williams, he made me laugh so much but then picturing him putting a noose around his neck

Bill hicks was one of my favourites, i met and chatted with him 3 months before he passed and I miss his humour and what he would have thought of the world today

Philip Lynott I was a massive Thin Lizzy fan and actually liked his solo stuff as well.

David Bowie and Prince, their deaths really affected me.

Burt Bacharach, you knew it was going to happen soon but it’s still gutting when he passed.

None. Some I am surprised by but the mild shock or sadness is so fleeting it barely registers.

I realise the loss to the world and my life when one or two of them are gone but it's kept in perspective with me.

I don't know them. Never met them. They never heard of me and I know that everyone dies.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Barry Humphries... thought how talented he was - had a smile remembering him and the world kept turning.

The two that stick in my throat are Victoria Wood and, more recently, Paul O'Grady

I don't have any great connection to Hollywood icons and music / sports stars

There was just something very familiar about them two, a warmth and a feeling that they were special

There have been some that I think “damn” but I don’t think there have been any that have been shocking because I learnt that death is just a part of life…..

Saying that there are certain celebrities or events if you want to call them that I can absolutely remember where I was when it or they happened….

As someone said earlier I can tell you exactly where I was when I heard princess Diana died…

That being said I'll be sad when David Attenborough dies. He's old obviously so wouldn't be a shock in that sense. It'll be a sad day for environmentalism.

Princess Diana. I was woken by a call from friend. I sat all day in front of the tv in shock.

From my youth, the rock guitarist Randy Rhoads who was with the Ozzy Osbourne band. He was only 25 and destined for great things before being tragically killed in a flying accident.

Diana has come up here.. reason why I remember that is that I was at uni at the time and worked part time at weekends for carphone warehouse, and because I was trusted I had the shop keys in case of emergency.. so the alarm had gone off Saturday night but that was okay because I was out! Wake up 8am Sunday morning .. somber music on radio … get to shop at 10.30 for 11am open and then think “oh god are there protocols for this?” And actually had to call head office which sounds odd now… anyway the other reason why I remember it is I worked in one of the bigger stores in the country.. am we had a whole 3 customers in all day!!

Don't know if you could call him a celebrity.

I still haven't got over losing Dale Earnhardt.

I still remember him like it was yesterday. Wrangler jeans, baseball hat, stand behind the wall son he shouted.

Next thing the quiet racetrack became a furious noise as a car went on to the track.

Suddenly at over 200mph, he came into view, car almost sideways,his head cranked over against the window net. Blasted into turn one flat out .

He wasnt just another race car driver, you could look up to him and wish you could drive like that. The man. Respected, hated but stock cars greatest in my opinion.

Chester Bennington and Robin Williamw as others have mentioned.

Two others who are probably not celebrities but known in their field. Kevin Conroy, long time voice of Batman and Jason David Frank from the original Power Rangers.

Major childhood memories and both died within a fortnight of each other.

The late great Robin Williams.

When he died I actually cried for a week. He was my comedy inspiration and weirdly, I never realized how much I loved him until the day he died.

Also George Micheal. When he dies I felt like I had lost a cousin, he was part of my life growing up, coming of age and his songs where a major part of my teenage years

Leonard Rossiter as a kid - I was absolutely fascinated by him and still remember being so shocked when he died.

And more recently, Carrie Fisher hit hard, because I suddenly realised what she represented to me as a 7 to maybe 14 year old kid.

Death can strike the child inside, like that first realisation of mortality again.

Aside from those two, most of my lifelong heroes are gone now, and the few left are all in their 80's and 90's. pt

The demise of the Apollo 11 astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins was a shock; Neil was the first human to step onto the Moon's surface, and Collins was the human being who was most distant from any other human, when he remained behind, when the other two astronauts went down onto the Moon in July 1969.

Neil Armstrong is probably the only human whose name will still be remembered in hundreds of thousands of years time.

For me it had to be John Lennon, I was never a Beatles fan but I love Lennon's music and lyrics, the night he died I was lying in bed age 16 listening to my radio cassette and recording music when a news flash came on saying he'd been shot then a short while later that he'd died, I had the recording for years, I don't know why I'd kept it but I did.

Another one for Gary Speed.

I went into a pub in Cardiff where Cymru/Wales fans would watch games at lunchtime on the day. Lots of people crying and a big place virtually silent.

I don’t normally get too upset over celebrities, but I just had to be around people who understood.

Although he was definitely not everyone's cup of tea, the death of Gay Byrne (whose simple understated grave I have visited in Sutton cemetery) did hit me hard; although he had been unwell for several years. His final photo shocked me!

He had a natural grasp of social changes taking place in Irish society.

I liked his challenging style of broadcasting, especially on his radio programme, but many people loathed his attitudes.

--Ripped the heart out of the UK imo, despite him being in NYC. Killed my an American with mental health issues and of course a gun. His music was getting right back there too imo (ie to Imagine/Plastic Ono level).

I think there was actually something of a degree of nationwide censorship over it at the time, at least where kids are concerned. Maybe due to his life with drugs (though he mainly just drank at the time apparently).

I was 10 years old but have never had any memory of it at all. Despite the Beatles always being so big back then. I remember a Junior school teacher in 1977 going on about Thatcher being an example for women (despite living in South Wales.) I remember my last Junior school teacher in 1982 talking about the Falklands War (and not in a particularly critical way either). But John Lennon in 1980? Not a thing. Not in the playground, and obviously not even at home (though I had that funny kind of home where everyone did their own thing).

Diana - huge shock due to the nature of how it happened and she was so young, but also I had met her a few times and she seemed genuinely lovely

George Michael - was a huge fan from the age of 12 and it was somewhat unexpected although he’d had lung issues for years

Robin Williams - as he struck a chord with me on the Mh side of things

Sue Grafton - because I loved her books for many years and she engaged with me and other fans in such a lovely way on social media. The alphabet ends at Y

Paul O’Grady - someone upthread said no sign of problems? He’d had heart problems for many years he spoke very openly about.

There are some Celebs it’s not a surprise, or I’m not a fan of but I get why it’s hard for their fans.

Frankly I find those that say “why I didn’t know them personally” a bit disingenuous. We don’t need to know someone personally for them to touch our lives and hearts.
