Friends mates and acquaintances? Do you separate the people you know into these categories?

What is a mate to you and where does the relationship cross to being a friend? A true friend.

Yes for sure

I have 1 friend

Dozens of mates

And a few acquaintances

The friend line is someone who is there thick and thin, no matter what, that's why there is only one for me

Hey, OP

Yes, I do. I have two best friends who I know would drop anything to help me out (and vice versa).

Then I have a couple of circles of friends who I’ve known for years and whose company I enjoy. I try to see them whenever I can and we always have a laugh. I like having them in my life.

I also have a few people on the periphery, with whom I chat occasionally - either in person or by text. Whilst I like them and will happily chat, my life is not empty without them. They usually migrate up from the acquaintance pool.

Acquaintances are two-a-penny. Mainly work-based and ok for the occasional catch up if I bump into them.

And then there’s family…..

How do you begin categorising family

Yes I do. There is a delineation for me when it comes to acquaintances and friends. I treat both equally when it comes to courtesy but my friends will know more about me, with a deeper connection, empathy, and (some) would be entrusted with my personal details or secrets.

I still value and respect my acquaintances, however.

There's no real line to cross it's a spectrum.

But as I spend most of my time I. Australia, everyone is mate.

Probably best I don’t go into detail or I’ll lose my cuddly ‘good guy’ image

I do in some ways and I don't in others.

I care about people, I'm passionate about kindness and always cheering people on so regardless of how well I know someone I'm there for them.

However those people who get really into my circle are really special. Knowing always there for each other. Shared memories, shared moment's of happy and sad and the ability to be completely authenticly just us.

Yes, I do separate people into categories.

Acquaintances are those who only know me superficially. They are also quite likely to mispronounce my name repeatedly.

I suppose mates are the ones who know something of my personality and humour. They know a little more beyond the "surface me" but know very little about my personal life or my past. I enjoy hanging out with them but I don't share much with them.

My friends are the ones who truly know me as much as anyone can. They're the people who matter the most to me and they're there for me as I am for them. They're also the ones I'm most vulnerable to and having made mistakes about friends in the past, well, I'm more cautious about whom I call a friend now.

Over time you realise you only ever have a handful of true mates. The rest are just acquaintances who float through your life without any real purpose.

To avoid confusion, please define friends and mates.

I think it’s more of a spectrum than fixed categories.

At one end there’s a total stranger. At the other is my wife. Everybody else I’ve ever met slots in somewhere along that line. Some are closer to one end, some are closer to the other.

And my relationships with people can change over time - they can move left or right on that line. Friendships aren’t static things.

That's what I'm asking you to do
