Ah. I hated the Hobbit. They massacred the story in a welter of CGI and bits culled from the other writings of Tolkien, and added bits that they made up. It totally killed the charm of the original book.

But that's just my opinion.

I also have an old copy of the Hobbit. Well, early 70s edition, much thumbed.

I thought they made a decent job of adapting LotR. I could quibble about details and certain narrative choices, but by and large they captured the essence. The Hobbit, on the other hand, was clearly an attempt to cash in. The book is too short for 3 movies, and they went full Hollywood on it. Not good.

I read the Hobbit and LotR when I was 11, and they're my formative works of fiction. My wife was deeply into Tolkien as well. It's what got us together. We have most of the additional works and histories curated by Christopher Tolkien, too.

House of the Dragon is one of the most compelling series I've watched in years. Proper, grown up Fantasy with serious themes and bloody outstanding performances. It's riveting. Paddy Consedine deserves an emmy for his performance as Viserys.
