Crackling's Thursday Rant!!!!

The following article has made my blood boil this morning!

Many of you know I have a severely autistic teen-aged daughter. I have had to fight tooth and nail from the day she was diagnosed to get her to a point where she and I get an acceptable level of support, and she goes to a school which fully caters for her needs and potential development.

Today, I feel like all that effort is about to be thrown down the pan thanks to a piece of, what appears, less-than-sound 'research' which is being reported as if it applies to all children (and adults) with autism/aspergers.

Makes me feel like taking my daughter on a plane, going to the other side of the Atlantic to find the people behind this 'research' and asking if they ever had a child with autism like mine in their minds when then published this??????

Next thing, we'll have Creationists and Homophobes jumping on the bandwagon at that thought there is another group who might 'grow out of' something they were born with, and will have to live with for the rest of their lives!!

Had to get that off my chest.

Your so right to rant!! One of my best friends has a son who is also severely Austistic and she's had to do the same.

Agreed with your rant.

When a friend gave birth to a boy some years ago, she said that at the time she sensed that something was wrong with him. The doctors at the time said it was too early to tell. Over the next couple of years he was eventually diagnosed autistic - one idiot apparently had him as a Downe's Syndrome!!! Anyway, over time the lad grew up to be a handsome chap and quite tall - around 6'1" but cannot communicate at all well. His Mum got him a place at a special school in Yorkshire near Doncaster (their home is in London), where he's done very well and has a part time job in a store.He's been given a place to live and with others he's holding his own.

Sorry for the digression but I thought it is a nice example of what can be done with care, love and special attention for people with such handicap.

agree with you typical yank science

my now 20year old son was diagnosed with adhd aspergas ocd & tuerets aged 9 after a long long fight with his local L,E,A, luckily we moved to a different area where with the help of his senco we managed to get him into mainstream school where with a lot of help and guidance some problems 9 mainly bullying and one teacher who isisted adhd didnt exist )he left with 13 gcse passes he now finds himself struggling to fit in tho luckily he has found job voulenteering at the YMCA

realy hate this type of sensationalist headlines but not at all suprised at which paper it is in

Please, don't believe everything you read in the Daily Fail.

Much of it is editoralised to scare the pensioners in the Kentish countryside from never going outside again, you know!

So, apart from the awful editoralising by the Daily Fail, I do think there is, somewhere buried in the article, a positive note.

It seems that the article is very poorly put together (no surprise) but that, what the scientists are saying is that with intensive therapy and help that some children can learn strategies and ways to overcome some of the barriers that they face within this condition and that with further study, there may be ways to help more children find ways to cope, adapt and overcome.

That's what I took from it - not the cheap sensationalist crap the Fail wipes over everything.

If new therapies and treatments can come from this study which improve the lives of all then it could be a good thing.
