I have been using winter tyres for 15yrs - was going skiing & did a 360 degree on a mountain pass and survived! Since then always had winter tyres, snow chain's and necessary back up in car! Spare pants too, just in case habe to change

good set of fairly narrow tyres with a good depth of tread and your fine

vauxhall corsa last year narrow tyres good tread take things steady never got stuck and i live in the pennines also saw plenty of 4x4s stuck in ditches through being driven to fast etc and sliding off the road

I have got a set of Avon ice contacts on my car - and then are red hot - last year in the ice and snow I was going past twats in there land rovers! Lol - they don't cost that much more than regular tyres and you can use them all year round - however ur fuel consumption will be higher x

The tyres are great the problem is if the car behind hasn't got them , you stop quicker than him or her lol, its the same with disc and drum brakes!

If you live in a place where the councils never grit I'd get a 4x4 and fit the tyres too.

We live on a bus route and don't do many miles in the car so its not really worth it for us.

Got winter tyres on my driving wheels (front). First used them about 3-4 years ago after hearing the Sunday night skiing forecast on BBC2 which said 'Snow for all parts of the UK on Thursday'. They were right and, despite the scoffing by 'Dan the Tyre Man', he put a set of nearly new ones on my Peugeot 607. Come Friday morning, I was the only taxi working around here, and took a woman to Portsmouth a back (230 mile round trip) in 8-12" of snow, with a disbelieving Womble (Highway Officer to you

) looking at me flying past him at about 60 through junction 5 on the M25

So, in short, get a spare set of wheels off ebay, by a set of winter tyres, have them fitted and keep them sitting there in readiness.

Trouble with most4x4 drivers is they think they are invulnerable, all goes tits up going downhill, they forget ALL CARS have 4 wheel braking!

As we both come from a country where is legal requirement to have winter tyres on from November to April, it's so amusing for us to see how the whole country can be brought to a stand still even with the small dusting of the white stuff

Yup winter tyres on my motorcycle

On a serious note, no winter tyre is better than 4x4. Problem is most 4x4 drivers don't know how to drive them and think they can stop just as well so tailgate when due to the extra weight they can't!

A good driver that is smooth with good throttle control should do just fine

Should be legal requirement here too, they work best in cold, wet, ice and snow. Would probably save a lot of lives.

Really? Depends on your circumstances doesn't it? My two winter tyres cost me £180. If I had a bump in my taxi I would lose my NCB (can't protect taxi NCB) and that would cost me an extra £1500-1800 next year alone.

not strictly true as once tyres have been inflated they will degrade,so storing them can have issues..

sod that. I pay about £660 a set for mine. I'm not shedding that out again for only a few weeks use.

4 wheel drive, drive carefully, know how to drive and drive only if necessary in extreme weather means I don't need them in this country

Cos £360 was pushing it a bit!! It's a FWD MPV, so all the pulling and the majority of the braking is on the front wheels, and the back tyres get hardly any wear. If the backs had been more worn, I would have put winters on there too, plus I am usually carrying both people and luggage, and the weight helps.

I have a set of winter wheels for my Alfa (Alfa owners are nerdy like that). I don't use winter tyres though. I grew up in the countryside in some pretty hilly areas and never seen the need, even when I had cosworth's and other powerful rear drive cars.

I understand some people liking or feeling they need them. But I've found that letting 5psi out of you tyres and setting off in 2nd along with having a light right foot and turning traction control OFF has seen me through just fine. Just remember to add the 5psi back when its thawed though...

I think it is VERY Important that you fit All 4 Wheels with winter tyres, it can be more dangerous only fitting 2 than fitting none... read HonestJohn website for all sorts of motoring Info

LMAO just because you drive a car pays no creed to the working knowledge of its parts. Can you remap an engine management system? No (but if you claim you can I will come back with specific questions on what how you go about it) Knowledge of tyre composite has very little to do with actually being able to drive a car. I will give you full marks for the amusement factor though.

Have been for years, it's a no brainer. Doesn't actually cost you any money apart from a second set of wheels. As you just use save the summer tyres when you're using the winter tyres.

The only annoying thing is getting called "reckless" for driving at the speed limit in "slippy conditions". Well I'm sorry mate, but I actually care about my life and decided to buy the appropriate tyres for the conditions.

I have friends who use winter tyres all year round they're not only good for snow ice and wet conditions but also if your a back road driver where it's not always a fixed road surface, nothing worse than hairing round a corner and hitting mud and shit the farmers dragged out a field over the track and the mud fills the grips and you're skating through the fence into the fields or worse through a dry stone dyke

Generally though a semi deflated tyre works just as good but for me winter tyres on a cheap set of wheels works out cheaper than my low profiles so hopefully the lads will be fitting mine tomorrow in saying that though I'm good at driving on the snow I'm the friend everyone phones to shift they're cars to somewhere safe when they've got stuck, but I drive fast and travel far to work us just bought new skis for me and the kids so ill be hitting the mountain trails at every opportunity

Defo true I'm trained to come out a spin and not oversteer track and off road but when you're on a busy road with other cars around instinct kicks in and you do ALL the wrong things hence why my last car was a total write off lucky to walk away busy motorway as well

You would be better off with Hammerite Kurust

The bodywork on most modern Alfa's is generally pretty good (unless you get a Friday car) you just have to watch the battery and airbag squibs. Thankfully Alfa make their diagnostic programs available for free.

The key to getting about in this weather is being prepared. Make sure your car is ready for winter by making sure your antifreeze is good, the battery is charged and you've got plenty of oil and fuel and your most of the way there.

Carry a spade, a small bag of grit, jump leads, a torch, water and you're sorted.

Agree totally. If you have a 4x4 learn how to drive it and snow will never be a problem again (except for the idiots who get stuck and block the road).

Oh and to the person who commented about passing "twats in their land rover". had that twice in the winter of 2010. Found one through a hedge and the other stuffed into a tree. If a 4x4 is going slow in the Ice and snow there is probably a very good reason for it and you just have not spotted it yet.

Just back from a skiing holiday in Austria and in a week, i saw maybe 3 4x4s. Where I stay, they are wall to wall and have to say, in the snow and on the ice, they are the most dangerous cars on the road. And they - the big poser bus ones, especially the BMWs- regularly get stuck on ice and snow on our road which is narrow and hilly, where my car 4x4 sails past.

As a person who's also from one of those places, I find it both amusing but also irritating when you see people driving without headlights on in a white car or a car covered in a foot of snow with a hole cleared so they can see going forward but nowhere else! Worse still people driving close enough they could get in your car instead of being in their own!!

I own a set, though not cheap, they are worth the money. With that said, it's a tough decision to purchase them when only a few areas in the UK are hit with the snow and ice conditions for long periods of the winter months.

Ok don't want to sound like a nerd but I was told by my insurance company ( direct line ) that you MUST let them know if your putting on winter tyres.........not sure if that's the same for all ins comps but gotta be worth a check.......stay safe peeps

"How many of you have them on and are ready to move around in the snow ? Surprisingly so many people have never heard they exist

Interesting as I asked that question a few weeks ago. I have always had proper winter tyres fitted round the end of Jan and they stay on until about March or even April. I know they are an additional expense and it is not illegal to drive on normal tyres in the UK but I just consider them an essential safety feature and one that always gets me home when others struggle with the slightest dusting of snow. In many European countries it is illegal NOT to have them.

Spot on mate

I have been driving since 1979 and cover many miles each year all over the country, competed in a dozen Lombard rac rallies and more national events I can remember all over wales in the middle of winter and guess what..............not once have I ever got stuck enough to warrant buying "majic" snow tyres.

Sorry, but I'm not walking 25 miles to work in weather that would make people want to put winter tyres on their cars. It aint happening.

There are those who swear that they’ve driven for 30 years in an unbalanced RWD vehicle with nothing but balding summer tires and never had a problem. They may be right, but that doesn’t mean that doing so is reasonable or that these results are typical. Just as the fact that my grandfather has smoked like a chimney for over 70 years and still doesn’t have lung cancer doesn’t prove that cigarettes are safe, anecdotal evidence from those who drive without snow tires doesn’t negate the major benefits of having suitable tires for winter weather conditions- the physics and accident statistics don’t lie. You yourself may even have made it through past winters without killing yourself or others, but that’s not much of a reason to continue to take the risk. Winter tires are an integral piece of winter safety equipment, and should be treated as such.

I have winter tyres on my Nissan X-trsil, i bought 4 on ebay for £120, baragin! Michelin to!

Shame my 'effin' wheel bearing has collapsed!!!

I have never heard of winter tyres, I do know that snow chains are only for commercial vehicles so be carefull when using them.

I used to ride a motorcycle in snow as it was my only mode of transport at the time and, it taught you a lot about how to handle power on snow. Ice was a case of get off and try and push it, I used to work nights as a security guard and the places I worked was not near any public transport.

Snow chains are not just for commercial vehicles but a very useful and necessary accessory when driving on snow. I have both, snow / winter tyres and chains for when i go abroad.
