In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

Ever have one of those days when everything has seemed to be going well, someone has (or some people have) made you smile, and then out of nowhere the brain goblins wake up and start doing the "you're not good enough and he/she/they don't actually mean what they say" dance through your brain?

Yeah. So that.

Gimme some anti self doubt tips please fabbers. Because I'm pretty certain those brain goblins are right and I don't want them to be.

Um.

I'm pretty bad for the brain goblins.

If ever a day is going really well for me you can bet they're there in the background with a looming sense of dread that I'm just kidding myself and it's all going to explode in my stupid face sooner rather than later.

I don't think I have a fix for it. I just do my best to ignore them and embrace those moments that prove them wrong with all of my heart

I know how you feel Iv been there many times and will be many more.

It takes a lot nowadays for people to actually give you positive and kind words so take on board what they said.

The reason you care about what they have said is because you’re obviously a passionate person who cares what people think.

Embrace the good comments and never be embarrassed about receiving a well earned compliment.

Brain goblins don't like you interacting with others as it takes away their power.

Just engage with someone you know, whther by phone, app, or even just with someone on here and they'll go back to sleep because you're not paying them any attention.

They get bored easily and if you're focussed on someone being positive and happy they'll shut up.

It's so hard but one thing I used to tell people to try was to physically say stop to the the thoughts and then ask the thoughts 'says who?' it might sound really silly but with practice it can help.

I was never into mindfulness but after trying it I realised its pretty powerful.

Sometimes those brain goblins need to be told to shut the f**k up because they are lying to you.

Hugs lovely. X

One of my guru's quotes

“One of the ego’s favorite paths of resistance is to fill you with doubt.” Ram Dass.

question your doubt and try and seperate yourself from it then look at it as a wintness.

You are great and worthy, ego is affraid of your greatness and sows the seeds of doubt, you are more then the doubt. You have proved that already.

I’m a blunt communicator so apologies if this comes off a bit rude.

There’s likely a trigger for the self doubt and crazy brain so I would try figure that out.

Focus on the things that have been said, not what you think they mean, and give the person the benefit of trusting what they say is true.

If you know this person well enough maybe just open up to them and ask for a little reassurance? We all need it from time to time.

Lastly don’t be so hard on yourself, you got this!

I like blunt. And I appreciate the pre-apology, although it wasn't needed as I didn't see rudeness, only wiseness and caring.

It's hard to trust sometimes. Safer to hear the negative... at least it is consistent in it's hurtfulness.

I don't know if they ever leave completely. I'm only a year out of the worst source of them, and it took me to the end of 2022 to finally cut loose the people that made me feel like I wasn't enough.

But they get quieter. When there's a few things dragging you down they'll probably still try and pile on for a while yet.

But you're awesome. You are enough. You deserve the happiness you feel in those moments before and after the goblins

"No their right "

You know what?

I and many others can be told good things, helpful things by 20 or more people, and they can be shouting as loud as they can manage.

One person comes in and whispers something negative, something nasty, something that echoes the negative in our heads, and suddenly that whisper becomes a scream, an echo, repeated over and over and drowning out the majority.

So thanks.

"I know how you feel Iv been there many times and will be many more.

It takes a lot nowadays for people to actually give you positive and kind words so take on board what they said.

The reason you care about what they have said is because you’re obviously a passionate person who cares what people think.

Embrace the good comments and never be embarrassed about receiving a well earned compliment.

That's the thing. I can do that... until those darned goblins come along and stomp on the embracing."

Try making a note of the positives and why you’re getting them.

Sometimes I just take a moment to step back and take stock of things when it’s getting a bit much.

It helps me to clear my head and put things in perspective

Evict the brain goblins. They don't serve you well, and they only hinder. Their sole role is to make people miserable and doubt themselves. All they do is sabotage people and make them unhappy. Ditch those suckers, and tell them to go and find someone else to bother. Life is so much easier without the brain goblins. Wishing you peace

Our minds can be horrendous things and no matter how much reassurance or praise or boosting that people on our side can provide, the mind will inevitably seek the doubt, the negative words and the slide/slump that it brings.

There’s many people out there that seem confident and glide through every day as they don’t have that little voice doubting themselves.

The thing is that they actually do, everyone does and it’s the finding ways to overcome that voice, to believe what people are genuinely saying and to accept praise when it’s genuinely meant.

For me, it’s maybe a case of making mistakes in front of others in my teens and being verbally slaughtered for it and thereafter being over cautious and defensive.

Still so difficult to accept praise and can only keep trying to keep doing things the way I do and allow myself to take that feedback when it’s genuinely meant.

It’s hard to say enough on here to be useful but there are a lot of talking therapies that suggest acknowledging that the voices are there and then looking at them as a separate thing. Let them sit and talk amongst themselves. Force your mind onto something else. When they come back, do the same again. Eventually their power will lessen and you’ll notice them being around less and less

That’s a tough one. I’m guessing brain goblins are your conscience? It’s ok to feel bad if we’ve messed up, not feeling bad when we have is a much more serious problem, so you’re ok! Each day we get chance to try and be the best version of ourselves again .

I can only say imagine this were your mate and what you'd say to them if they were feeling this way .. Now replace your mate with yourself and say exactly the same things. Look at yourself in the mirror as you say positive things.

.

I really can't be arsed to read the entire thread, apologies if it's been mentioned already.

Is there something that's triggering it? It might be something small, some words that appeared inconsequential, minor inconsistent behaviour etc. I realised that I do have triggers that almost feed them. Take this past weekend. Zero self doubt. Zilch. And I've realised, it's because there's nothing making me doubt myself, even if really small.

More practical solutions? Talk to loved ones. People who remind you of your worth. I heard a lovely story recently of a friend who was having a wobble and she received a long voice note reminding her of her good points. Don't reach out to people who'll tell you you're being x, y and z bad qualities. Fuck that.

Yoga can help still the mind. Or going for a long walk in a forest. Phone off, listening to what's around you. Sometimes you can wank it out. Or sleep it out. Kitchen dance parties. Bake something you love. Give it to someone you care about.

And as daft as it sounds, talk to yourself as you would to a loved one. Write it down. We can be incredibly harsh critics sometimes and seeing on paper how unfair we're being does make you realise how self critical we are.

Hope they bugger off soon for you, x

Yep. Not self indulgent at all.

The one thing that's been constant in all my time on Fab is that when people feel the need to vent there will be some good advice and support given amongst the humorous responses and the occasional comment that should have been typed in invisible Internet ink.

It's often much easier to vent and rant to virtual friends and strangers than those we know as there'll be less preconceived notions about any motivation or details than if you talk to close friends and family.

And there are always going to be others experiencing the same feelings, emotions and issues. We're all unique but we will all most likely experience many of the same issues in our lives so can help others from out own past experiences.

Hope things seem better this morning!
