"It wont be the event his mother had Even in death she still upstages him" Because the Age of Deference is over. The only practical political reason why there's still a British royal family and sovereign is because he or she is the head of the British government, a role that is only hereditary in nature. Imagine changing King Charles III for President Rishi Sunak or Keir Starmer (or god forbid, Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn in past years). Anti-monarchists in the UK really should be careful what they wish for.

"Queen Diana? I hate to break the news but…… Princess Diana might be dead for a while now, but memory of her still runs deep both within the UK and internationally. Many still blame Charles for his infidelity with Camilla that resulted in his divorce from Diana, and by extension the Royal Family's "othering" of Diana within the family because she didn't fit into their image of what the wife of a future king or even current prince should be like. When Elizabeth II died last year, one of the first things my mum said was "oh my god, now that ghastly woman Camilla is going to become Queen." Bear in mind my family isn't royalist in the slightest, and we're not even from the UK (though we used to be a British colony), but my mum was one of the tail-end Boomers (born in 1958), and her adult years' impression of the British Royal Family was of the Queen and Princess Diana first and foremost. I wouldn't find it surprising one bit that the late Diana's appeal across the generations remains just as strong in death as it was in life, and that many in the UK and internationally still hold her to be the true successor Queen Consort, not Camilla (for all the whitewashing that has been done). " An interesting and insightful submission. Would be fun if the route became lined with spectators bearing placards bearing Diana's image but I imagine the authorities will have thought ahead on that possibility. Or they will after reading my post!

"I’ve always been a monarchist but I’m seeing things differently these days. Somehow they don’t feel…. relevant anymore. I know people say they bring lots of tourism, but those people would still visit Windsor castle, Buck House etc. I know people say they’re great ambassadors for the UK. But are they? Really? And in this age of diversity and global society, who says one family should rule them all? I was going sit and watch the coronalisationalism but my friend has asked me to go out for the day with his kids. That actually sounds like a fun day out so I’m happy to do that instead. I’ll watch the highlights from when Insulate Britain throw icing sugar all over the state carriage."

"I'm looking forward to it. The Royal family are pretty much the only thing that England has these days in terms of identity. We are not allowed to be patriotic anymore, even though the Welsh and Scottish are allowed to be fiercely independent and patriotic. As a country we seem to have been trying to be so American in stead of European that are we now the 51st state? This is an ancient and historic country with a very rich not always pleasant history and just dismissing the royal family as being unimportant and unnecessary is ignoring a few thousand years of history. I like having a King or Queen I love all the pomp and ceremony it's just who we are, without them we are just well I'm not sure as the government is fucking embarrassing and doesn't give a shit. I’d say how grateful I am that we are “allowed” to be “fiercely independent and patriotic” (though I don’t feel I’m either, myself). However, the amount of vile and ill-formed comments this week about a Welsh organisation wanting to call a Welsh landscape by its original Welsh name, I think you’ll find it’s actually pretty f****** hard work being “fiercely independent”

Anyone who hates the royals but is more than happy to take a paid Bank holiday why not give up your day helping out at a local charity." Wow... the presumption here. Yeah, I'll be working that whole day, and I don't mind at all. The only bank holidays I'll take off will be one in May and another in August - aside from that, I can take as much paid holiday as I like whenever I please. Also, just because people increasingly recognise the monarchy for the publicly funded hegemony of privilege it is, doesn't mean they 'hate'. The label of hate is what you've ascribed to something closer to 'disaproval' and a perfectly reasonable unwillingness to be forced to pay into it when there are far more deserving needs. I might disapprove of the kind of low-brow jingoists who perpetuate it, but that doesn't mean I hate them. If people who are in favour of a monarchy want to retain it then good luck to them. Perhaps, instead of scrounging off the rest of us who can see better uses for our hard earned taxes, they shouldn't mind paying for it themselves by voluntary donation if they want it so much. After all, if the monarchy is so popular then enough of them will and the monarchy can carry on no problem, and allow the rest of us to be more secure in the knowledge that we're better funding public services.

"I'm ignoring it zero respect for the obvious reason What obvious reason? That you're a republican? Or maybe just a democrat... as in democracy? " Sure. I was genuinely curious. I don't have an especially strong view. We do we live in a democracy already (even if it's slightly flawed); the monarchy has no real role in government, beyond ceremony. If we removed it (and there are strong arguments that it's an outdated institution), we'd become a republic!

"I'm ignoring it zero respect for the obvious reason What obvious reason? That you're a republican? Or maybe just a democrat... as in democracy? Sure. I was genuinely curious. I don't have an especially strong view. We do we live in a democracy already (even if it's slightly flawed); the monarchy has no real role in government, beyond ceremony. If we removed it (and there are strong arguments that it's an outdated institution), we'd become a republic!" There are some convincing studies that indicate the UK is now an oligarchy rather than a democracy, maybe we have not quite reached that point but we on the road. We are told repeatedly that the monarch has no role but the reality seems at odds with that. The Queen had over 1000 bills altered to suit her. The PM meets regularly with the monarch in secret, so we have no idea how much influence is exerted beyond what we see in the tax advantaged duchies.

" My view - and it's a personal one, obviously - is that any influence is marginal. And certainly on the biggest policy issues, but I agree influence is greater than nil overall. There are definitely pros and cons for an alternative system, but on balance I'd stick with what we have, given the choice. Lord knows who "the people" would elect as Head of State!

"Nope i think the queen was the last royal for me, Charlie boy doesn't cut it We should've taken the opportunity to abolish the monarchy when she died - it's well overdue time to break the cycle. Hopefully, that'll happen when Charles dies." Doubt it, because William and Catherine are quite popular.

Perhaps William might decide to abolish monarchy off his own bat in favour of a quiet life - I doubt it though, so probably best to wean them off the public tit sooner rather than later.

"Obviously being Irish I have zero interest in the event or the people involved." I’d love to be in Dublin with a pint (or maybe 2) of Guinness and ignore it all.

"Not my king." For those of us with Channel Islands' allegiance the late Queen was always known as 'La Reine, notre Duc'(of Normandy and, oddly, taking the male title). Charles will become 'Le Roi, notre Duc'. Camilla will presumably become 'Duchess Consort (of Normandy)' to the tradition loving islanders.
