Explain the logic of asking if you can ask a question…

I don’t get it.

Surly you’d just ask…

Or at least give more detail on the topic you want ask about.

Thursday conundrums.

It's a bit like saying "with all due respect" before calling someone a cunt

The direct approach is infinitely better, everyone knows where they stand then.

If you have to qualify your question with a question before you even ask it maybe you shouldn’t be asking it

1. It's a way of trying to get a conversation started

2. Trying to be polite and courteous without wishing to offend anyone

3. Also trying to ensure the recipient has time and wants to engage

In daily life, I do normally use it to ask someone I am unfamiliar with to see if there was scope for a further conversation.

I.e. Would you mind if I asked you a question please?

Sure

What kind of hobbies and interests do you have, apart from fab?

Does not usually work with fabs messaging system though very well.

This one is my pet hate

So irritating. The reason for their message is usually nothing to do with the question they want to ask, they’re just trying their luck to get any sort of response. Same as when they say ‘We spoke a while back how are you?’ (Never spoken to them before in my life), or deliberately call you by a different name as they think you’ll respond and correct them

Ha... So true lol. I don't mind that so much though.

It's 'If I tell you something will you promise not to get upset?'.

How can I promise you that without knowing what it is?

Asking if you can ask a question is asking a question.

To get a response, to engage you.

Also and I'm taking this from a thread way back it's this....

'this Is a socially accepted way to ease into something that might be a personally awkward question. By asking a non question, the asker is being passively defensive. They are defending themselves from potentially negative reactions to the real question by posing an easy lead in, if the answer is ‘no’ they’re not the one being impolite, after all asking if you can ask has to be polite?!

By getting a ‘yes’ to this polite lead in question, you are already predisposed to positively answer the following question because you’ve have already partially agreed to it.’

On here, yes. If you agree to the question, it's usually something hideous and disgusting, like "can I shit in your mouth while playing the bagpipes"

Exactly. The bagpipe playing is of much greater concern to me, in that scenario

If someone says can I ask a question I sometimes say yes, but I may not answer it, and if it's sexual I'll ignore it.

Let me guess, it’s always single guys you’ve never met?!

I imagine it’s a way of appearing non-confrontational, inoffensive - ‘I’m in your hands’ kinda thing. Giving you the option of responding or not, especially before they take time to write out a long, thoughtful and sincere question about whether you’d let them come round for 3.5 minutes because they’re bored and horny in their hotel room.

I guess it usually means they’re building up to a leading question that isn’t just ‘what’s your favourite colour’ and they want to prep the ground.

Naive tactic and I’d be tempted to answer with a question and see how long you can string it out.

In my inbox, if I ever feel like living dangerously and saying go right ahead and ask, the questions are always totally bizarre

One involved eyelids. And dongs. And… rubbing…

Sunniest Exeter...

I get that it is a polite move and and attempt to get a conversation started, but ultimately pointless. As someone stated above, it can simply be answered "no"

Anyway chances are neither this message nor "the actual question" will get answered, so it's an exercise in futility.

Better to send one message (if you are still messaging people) and get ignored, but it least you took your shot.
