Is the rest of Europe laughing at us?

Gas,electric, water, food, banks screwing us on every chance they get, trains that are so expensive its cheaper to fly , and a government that just keeps adding to our problems .

Most of the world seems to limit what interest rates card companies apply, whilst our government does nothing!

Just had a visa application fall on my door mat , APR 39.9%, lol .....filed that in the bin!

Have you seen prices across Europe? Some are far higher and the tax in France is incredible. If it was that good there they wouldn't come to the UK to live.

Agreed that many aspects are, or seem, to be a rip-off.

But, since gas, electric, rail and most transportation is now privatized, together with VAT makes for very high prices. But as everything is privatized, there's a profit to be made to shareholders.

However, when it comes to Bank Accounts, I'm amazed that we still get free banking in this country.

You mean nobody actually forced you to sign it and return it? Shock, horror, probe! What is the world coming to!

'Most of the world' ... hmmm... does most of the world have the infrastructure we have over here that makes life a luxury compared to what 'most of the world' has?

I seem to remember non-smokers saying that if pubs were smoke free they'd use them. They don't.

I wonder how many people would use trains more if they were cheaper. Not many more, I bet. My car gets me where I need to be when I need to be there, in comfort, and in private. Many people use their cars for much the same reason. Tax on fuel needs addressing and this fuel price stabiliser has been a red herring so yes, the govt have that to answer to.

Gordon Brown said in 2010 that he should have regulated the banks but he didn't. He admitted it on national TV during the election, so it's hardly the current govt's fault for the things the banks did prior to 2010. They can'd do it again though because, guess what, they've been regulated. By the current govt.

An APR 39.9% is a nice return on anyone's investment but most offer half of a third off that rate.

I would happily use the train far more if it were cheaper.

But £130 for two people to do a return journey to London - on a Sunday? If the trains are even running?

John Bird, the founder of the Big Issue was talking about the public taking the power of democracy from the 'political classes' and doing good for the country with it just the other day on the telly.

Free banking will always be available to people who have savings of £50k or more and are high earners. These people provide the bank with revenue to invest.

The less well off don't provide the bank with a suitable amount to invest so they will charge.

Unfair I know but is sound business sense

It will be the less well off that will have to pay for the privilege of a bank account!

That doesn't surprise me. The banks need to recover the cost of everyone's PPI claims and I honestly believe that the cartel of the major banks will do it by leveraging a charge for everyone to have a bank account.

Plus they will want to re-coup the cost of the infrastructure for running accounts for 60 million people!

Tax, --- How can they put VAT on after the duty, that means you are paying a tax on the tax. VAT stands for value added tax, taxing duty is not taxing the value of the product

All banks run as a business most people forget that.

Yes I know they have a bad rep more so with the credit crash.

Banks don't care about the average person that's why they get screwed.

But if you have money they will bend over backwards ! I will always have free banking, but only because I have money and am in a position to negotiate or move my funds abroad.

I think you'll find that the banks have been ordered to separate their investment operations from their retail operations. They cannot gamble with money intended for use in the High St, thus they can no longer rely on Joe Taxpayer to bail them out if they fuck up with their investment strategies.

German train travel can be done very very cheaply, if you know how. But that is the same as here in Britain. Their ICE trains, however, are quite expensive. Don't know how they compare to here, but I would not be surprised if it was similar.

Thatcher started the deregulation, the rest of them just continued it as it suited the economy..

something like 24% of gdp was through 'financial services' in 2008 before it went pear shaped..

just like the tories were fully behind Blairs illegal war and would have done the same had they been in power, they would have gone down the same path as Brown did..

ok he fecked it on the gold reserve sell off, but Gideon fecked it with Northern Rock..

As for splitting the casino element from 'traditional banking', when did it happen.. just more smoking mirrors..

this lot have bottled it by not being strong enough with the banks loaning out funds from BOE to SME etc..

they're all complete cocks whatever colour they 'represent'..
