Following on from the closure of Comet / Jessops, did you know Amazon made £3.3bn in the UK last year and paid the total of UK Tax of £0.00

And Starbucks is just as bad

Yes was in the news before christmas. From what I gather the govt. have led an inquiry and these companies are going to pay quite a heft donation of tax.

Morally they are wrong, legally not. Just one of those loop holes.

Apple (i tunes) are in the same group. We (collectively) are responsible for the demise of the High Street by purchasing on-line and it is in fact a double whammy if your on-line purchase is from a multi national:

1) You put people in the High Street out of work and burden the Welfare system.

2) The multi national does not pay UK Corporation Tax thus depriving the country of welfare funds.

Don't hold your breath about Corporation Tax rules changing anytime soon though it will take a massive upheaval of international tax treaties and that can only go as fast as the slowest country.

They were just going on about this in the tv, HMV paid taxes so as stands to reason its products were more costly, amazon doesn't pay tax and can under cut the high street......

And guess who loses !

Us .....and were the ones using Amazon !......It's a mad mad world...

The jersey VAT loophole was closed and now play.com is closing down. It will just run as Play.com Marketplace, i.e. a shopfront for the myriad of other small traders.

Things like car parking costs, lack of parking, people living further from local high street and cost of public/private transport all link into our embracing the online shop front.

Terrible isn't it... The last company worked for had a terrible website. When asked about it they said who cares because we prefer people to shop instore x

Everybody wants everything for less.

Why would you pay £30 more for a camera from a high street store than you would if you bought it online - save for the fact that you cant hold it, feel it play with it, take it back to get advice on it etc,etc.

You want it for less, you get less with it. You cant complain when the high street store closes because it cant afford to hold stock, pay wages, rent, light, heat etc.

Soon, the high street will be nothing more than niche clothing stores, B&M Bargains and takeaways.

I can't disagree with most of that however the high-street won't die that badly as people still like to try things on. I think it will evolve but there will still be many people who want to impulse but and not bother about the cheapest price.

At the end of the day, if I earned enough money to worry about it, I'd want to minimise my tax burden. I'd do that via loopholes. Big business is no different.

Other than the fact the government went after me with IR35 quite a few years ago (when I was earning enough to worry about it), because it was way easier than going after big corporations who pay millions a year in lobbying fees !
