Yep went bust and bought our of administration. They will be hoping for a similar result with HMV but I doubt anyone will want to touch it, huge fixed cost base with rents and rates and a consumer who can by all the products online with no hassle and at cheaper cost.

If you want to identify the likely next casualties, look for something which has the same things in common with Comet, Jessops and HMV:- High St re-SELLERS who offer products which are commodities (ie. come prepackaged from the manufacturer, which can be bought anywhere else, and to which little or no 'added-value' is applied) and you've got your list of 'possibles'....

They been bouncing on the bottom for 12 months plus now. I think most big stored were banking on Christmas to get them through. Well thats out the way, gas and electric went up (ok big stores get discounts) and the tax man wants his cut as always.

Still has a huge store base, was looking for a buyer not long ago and will struggle to transition to an online play, we will see as it has large debts which I suspect it is struggling to service.

I'll go for Mothercare. The one in out high street shut down beginning of last year.

Waterstones deserves to shut down with 10 shelves of 'erotic' fiction, and only 2 shelves of classics. But that's just a bug bear of mine.

I'd personally like to see Pets At Home go, but they have the market cornered unfortunately.

To be honest, I think what we are seeing is like a 'Internet induced' correction in the retail market, taking what were traditionally specialist markets (eg. Waterstones) back to where they started.

What we need to remember is that the way a lot of our High St's went in the 1980's (ie. small specialist retailers suddenly being turned into effectively giant franchises) at that time was a 'sea change'. The internet has, to me, brought it home just how thin was the crust on which some of these businesses were built. Many just got too damned smug for their own good - if what I have heard about the statement made by the boss of HMV in 2004 that 'we don't need to worry about the internet' is true, then they have got their 'retail desserts'...

Businesses should ignore the power of technology and the ability of people to change their consumer habits at their peril.

I think 2013 will see carnage on the high st - just what do people now buy there other than coffee???

It has a good online part to its business and sells Home, Clothes and Food (to name a few).

Must have a high yield - a lot of their stock is made in factories in China (specially the bicycles) which THEY own. They must have one of the highest 'added value' %ages in the High St AND they are big on the internet too.

Argos will be gone by the end of this yr or early 2014, because HRG announced it is forming a joint venture with Haier Electronics, the Chinese home appliance manufacturer. HRG will own 49% and Haier the other 51%

The new business will opened its first Argos store in Shanghai last yr (2012) and says its long-term aim is to open other outlets across China.

This will boom in china and with the Uk market dwindling for Argos it had a 29% loss on the last quarter yearly profits. HRG and Haier could pull the plug and move all Argos operations over seas not good for British economy.

I was listening to the radio today where they were saying that the Internet is killing high street shops where people are trying on or looking at items on display and then leaving and buying the same item cheaper on the Internet.

The costs are cheaper and staff numbers are lower so profits , even at a lower price, are higher .

Do you know a company that has been around since 1516 that is actually doing quite well due to the Internet despite working in a fiercely competitive market with its hands tied behind its back where it carries the competitors mail at a loss and carries on in the knowledge that it is to be torn apart because the EU decrees it ?.

Try Royal Mail .

This was one of the busiest Christmases I have seen for years , at one point Royal Mail told Amazon to stop feeding packets into the system as we could not cope .

Don't believe the lying politicians when they tell you mail levels are declining , they are changing , that's all .

The Next group won't be going under anytime soon, they have recently posted very bouyant results...

The companies that are carrying large debt are the ones to look out for.

The Argos/Homebase/Habitat group are kept afloat by their financial services arm of the company, most if not all of their operating profit comes from there.

Edinburgh Wool and Bonmarche look very iffy and Thomas Cook are looking decidedly shakey...

Large debts and onerous leases are the killer signs, along with a product which isn't unique or differentiated. I fear for many retailers and their employees I'm afraid. Because everyone is feeling the pinch and has become much smarter buyers, the old retailers are really at risk.

Quote from todays papers "Blockbusters follow the likes of Comet, jessops and HMV into the retail graveyard"

You saw it here first folks!

Blimey, I thought Blockbusters would last a little longer.... now waiting for the closing down sales in Waterstones!

I believe the Argos catalogue is/ was the largest print run in Europe.

How they managed to afford it I'll never know.
