Do you believe neck/hand tattoos are job stoppers?

Recently I applied for a job somewhere, pretty high up in a firm. Pass through to the final interview stage however they felt that my neck tattoos was a bit too much.

This is the first time I’ve felt discrimination.

If it was my business neck or hand tatoos wouldn't be an issue.

I'd be more concerned about whether you could do the job or not and if your personality was a good fit.

Unfortunately yes I think it is. I don't get it but I remember working in the hospital and one nurse was absolutely amazing and so good with patients but had a lot of tattoos so was seen as 'different' so the charge nurses made things very difficult for her

Also, I really want another on my forearm going onto my hand. Where I work tattoos are meant to be covered though, I'd just wear gloves year round!

Yeah I see what you mean, I guess judging by today’s society you can see it both ways. I think the frustrating part is getting through to the final round and then hearing that.

its about how it looks, i guess, as if tattoos mean you wouldn't still be a consummate professional and highly skilled at your job.

If you were just behind a screen and never seen by the public, i don't suppose it would matter. When you’re in the public eye though, people would make different assumptions.

Unfortunately a lot of companies will look at things like tattoos that are hard to cover as a negative, especially if you're in a role that leads to liaising with clients face to face. It's one of those where you'd have to completely stand out from all other candidates to get passed it, which is wrong in my mind.

no .... ive taken on many people within the large company i run with neck and hands tattoos and other tattoo's that show ... they are great at their jobs and at the end of the day thats what they get paid for ..and alot of those jobs are front facing too not hid behind the scenes ... its 2023 people dont judge on how others look or they shouldn't our staff are and i say this proudly a very mixed up bunch indeed str8 bi gay trans fluid tatts no tatts religious non religious from all parts of the world all working together doing fantastic jobs all 403 of them

I think it depends on the job. When I was in hospital I think almost all the nurses had tattoos. It's so common place it doesn't stand out anymore. The guy that worked in my local bank had tattoos that he obviously covered up but you could just see them at the bottom of his arms. They don't bother me at all although I don't like face tattoos.

My son has hand, neck and throat tattoos and does well in his job

It very much depends on the company.

Many older people still see tattoos as a sign of a "bad" person. So, tradtional firms may view tattoos negatively.

However, there's more and more who understand that having a visible tattoo has no bearing on the ability of the person to do the job.

I have tattoos and very unnatural coloured hair, I got my job because I was the best candidate.

If a company cannot accept your tattoos, you probably wouldn't have been happy working for them anyway.

It shouldn’t be a thing but it is a thing unfortunately. I’ve kept mine under collar and cuff for that reason. I’ve been in hiring decision meetings and heard senior management talking down about tattoos when they had no idea I’ve got quite a few.

It shouldn't but clearly it does affect how people see you.

Face tattoos are a little different I think but it depends what they are.

Most people know what certain face tattoos mean and I wouldn't employ someone with them.

That's a bit of a stretch, but it's never been for anything other than fallen/wounded soldiers. On other tatts, I know many of officers with full sleeves and they aren't required to cover them up. They are also allowed silly beards and man buns..

Depends on the job. If you’re shovelling shit in the back nobody cares but if you on the shop floor dealing with customers then it’s the company’s decision on how they like to portray themselves.

Our daughter recently applied for the role of cabin crew. It was a zoom call and the first thing all candidates had to do was prove they didn't have any visible tattoos. Anyone that did the interview was terminated on the spot.

Totally will stop some jobs or recruitment into certain fields or high level positions.

It is what it is .. tattoos are becoming more accepted but some people have ridiculous stuff that maybe offensive imagery and then wonder why they don’t get job / 2nd / 3rd interview.

One of my friends was offered a job recently working with kids. She was asked in both interviews (well told advised ) she will need to cover up her arm tattoo as the imagery was very graphic and not suitable for children. She refused to do this so they cancelled the job offer. My mate was raging over this at us but we mostly said they have a fair point and how hard is it to wear a long sleeve top .

Remember it’s very easy to sack candidates off as a recruiter / manager when you have more candidates on hand. Proving discrimination is the issue over s hunch .

Aside from my face, neck and hands I am totally covered (even armpits and feet!!) but would never consider having the 'visible' area tattooed because I think when people see those areas with tattoos they immediately make a negative judgement. Whether it is right or wrong it does affect job prospects.
