Hi does anyone know if I can legally put a padlock or another type of lock on my electricity meter box?

It's outside & I want to make it more secure.

Thanks in advance.

Is it actually your meter box or is it your meter box that also has your fuseboard as well ?

It's just the meter. The fuse box is indoors.

I've had a couple of instances where I've found it open. Not sure if it's due to bad weather or people fiddling.

I often have the same problem of people fiddling with my box without me looking, mainly on fab meets but it’s still an issue…

It might spark their curiosity.

They have the power to force entry.

Probably just use volt cutters.

It’s not uncommon for meter boxes to blow open so it might not be anyone fiddling with it.

You can buy replacement locks readily but you could ask your supplier to replace it (at their cost).

Remember, the supplier must have access to the meter so you shouldn’t fit a padlock.

I would think the emergency services would require access to it in the event of an issue.

The meter is owned by the electricity company so they will want access to it.

Keep mine locked as the main fuse is inside it.

If its the plastic cover type, you could always cut a small viewing slot in it and secure some clear perspex so the meter can still be seen, but not easily accessed

It's a very good question. The meter box isn't purchased or installed by the meter company so you can actually do with whatever you fancy, however the contents of said enclosure you don't own...and no the electric company do not have authority to access it without your permission if locked.

Look at it this way. If your meter is in your house the electric board can't break in to read meter...same applies

Paint it yellow. Write the words "Fab Woman's InBox".

From what I've learned on the fora...

...it will never get opened, let alone tampered with.

You beat me too it.

My meter is in the house, which is locked, the energy provider can only get access if I unlock and let them access it.

Aye, but it seems that the energy companies are allowed to force access to fit pre payment meters if a customer is in arrears or to investigate suspected meter tampering etc......

They can apply for an order from a court to enter premises, as can various other bodies, if they force entry without it they are themselves committing an offence.

I think it’s been in the news recently that these orders have been handed out with little questioning

Have a search for a "cabinet lock'.

You should be able to find something to replace your current lock for only a few pounds.

.

Except that it isn’t correct.

they have Rights of Entry under law and can apply for a warrant. Once they have the warrant they can force entry.

I’m astonished that people will encourage you to get into difficulties with your energy supplier based on the way they think things ought to be instead of the way they are.

The supplier has a right of access to your meter and will enforce that right if you deny them access by locking your meter box.

End Of.

Are you suggesting that I have to leave my house unlocked at all times, I should hope not.

By locking the meter box the OP would not be denying them access.

He would only be denying them access if he refused to unlock it when they asked to access the meter.

Exactly the same as the meter inside my house, when they require access to the meter they get in touch and arrangement is made to let them in.

couple, us we him her.

If you buy a fire brigade padlock, emergency services can open it and supplier should carry those keys also.

I'd definitely contact them first.

Is it a private property or council/housing association?

If the latter you should definitely get in contact it may just require a new door if lock is faulty.

The safest way, as with all things, is to contact the authority concerned and ask them the question instead of relying on well-meaning but ill-informed people on a sex hook-up site

( which might include me, though unlikely).
