...that don't mean what people think they mean? For example;

'The exception that proves the rule' doesn't mean that every rule has an exception, it means that if something appears to be an exception, apply the rule to it and if it turns out not to be an exception after all then the rule has been proven.

'Masterpiece' didn't originally mean an artist's greatest piece of work. It meant a piece that showed the artist was a master of their craft and techniques, but it didn't necessarily mean it was their best work - it was more like passing a practical exam.
