Text speak.....

I can't abide 99% of text speak on a profile or message, it screams lazy to me....this is Mrs Scoobs by the way.

I don't mind lol but m8, wud, cud, 2 (and so many more words) just totally turn me off and I will not bother trying to read a profile or will not entertain someone who uses it in their messages.

I try to spell and punctuate properly, however, spelling mistakes and lack of commas etc I don't notice as much and that wouldn't put me off as it shows that someone has tried.

I know that this may sound a bit pompous, but with modern day predictive text, proper qwerty key pads on phones etc, there is no excuse for being this lazy and if they are lazy in this then what else are they not bothered about???

I'm not sure it is laziness for some. It is the way of the social group, with which they have, their most interaction.

I think text speak is appropriate when texting only. If I get mails in text or see a profile in text, it can put me off.

As with all things here, different things suit different people. Personally text speak drives me insane. Hate it,even in texts!! I understand it, just don't like it. However, there are clearly lots on here who don't seem to mind or even embrace it. Perhaps in profiles there should be a filter which says like/don't like text speak? That way people who want to send us messages would know it's not for us?

Why write slightly shortened words when it takes no longer to write the full word

Your examples...why type jst........? a split second more and you have just, need I say any more.

The art of communication is being dumbed down by text speak, rather sad in my humble opinion

Mr scoobs here

Ok why do you send messages to people on here??? to get a meet so you are trying to sell yourself and impress the person you are writing too??

Look at it another way, if you where writing an email to your boss/potential client/bank/gas-elec company etc etc would you write the email out properly or would you just do it in text speak???

First impressions count and its been said many times on here no matter who you are you have to sell your self to the peron/persons you are emailing and stand out from the crowd.

How do you know the person/persons you are writing too hate text speak??

Mrs Scoobs again.

Glad I am not alone I get it in text messages as well from one or two people and it drives me mad.

It may seem petty to some but as Hubby said you're out to impress which this just doesn't.

As for putting on your profile that you don't like text speak what's the point? Most people don't read what you've written anyway so they're not likely to stop.

You're correct it is unfounded but its first impressions isnt it.

I just turn off from someone who uses it and can't be bothered with them if they can't be bothered to type a message properly.

No I don't mean just put it on profile. I mean have it as a compulsory filter. If you like txt spk then allow people who also like it and if you don't then if blocks those people. We can do it

For males TVs etc why not text speak? It is one of the biggest discussions on here constantly. I seem to remember a

Dating site I was on a loooooong time ago allowed you to block people who put less than 100 characters in a message. So why not the same process?

Unfortunately it seems to give the impression that the sender is either lazy, a chav or simply cant spell words normally...

Its a strange thing, but I get texts from a lot of people from various backgrounds and walks of life..by some coincidence texts that come from the more educated ones are the only ones free of text speak...not wishing to put people in boxes but unfortunately, whatever our feelings on the subject, we are placed in these 'social groups and 'classes'...

So putting it bluntly..the lower end of the educational/social/class ladder someone 'appears' (and officially I guess Im down there with them)to be the more text speak arrives..

Thus reinforcing peoples perceptions of others who use it...

text speak is like the old speed writing (if you werent clever enough to manage pitmanscript ) - but you wouldnt use shorthand all the time - but saying that as i write this im also thinking if we treat it as a language in its own right - then so long as people reading it understand then no problem -

Text speak, in my opinion, is destroying the integrity of the English language. It's well documented that children are leaving school without knowing how to read and write . Text speak only adds to that. In the same way that calculators have replaced the ability to add, subtract and divide , text speak is also stopping people from learning basic spelling .

The odd word here and there is not too bad, but I've received messages were every single word has been shortened. More than anything else it can be incredibly difficult to read and can often cause confusion as to exactly what it is the person is trying to say

I can spell and write, and don't always use tex speak, well hardly ever, as i know how petty, and narrow minded some people can be on here.

I say narrow minded, as how is assuming someone who uses tex speak are illiterate, or lazy in bed, anything other than narrow minded.

yes each to there own,and personal preference of course. I find it easier when typing fast But that's just me, and when u spend hours writing messages etc just to get them not even read, or just deleted, why would some people use anything else.

Wow! times have changed since leaving the teaching profession 7 years ago!

Some people use it in social situations to text if they are extremely busy, especially with those they know well... However I find that the classic English language is sadly a dying art in social interactions..

When organising meets or dirty sexy talk emails I like to use the classic English as much as possible... D H Lawrence and Anais Nin (who wasn't even English) comes to mind.

Some people can get away with text speak due to their age... Yet it's supposed to be a fun swing site where there is something for everyone... We can't take things as text speak too seriously when it comes to sex eh?

No - sorry. You are wrong. All children leave PRIMARY school with the basics of reading and writing (at various levels). This is a common myth propagated by the ignorant in the media.

Text speak is appropriate in only ONE instance - when texting. That is why it is called TEXT speak.

I don't think that everyone who uses text speak are beneath me in terms of education or ability or anything like that.

There is no distinction between being a mastermind and someone who left school at 15 with no qualifications....if both used text speak, I would think the same....lazy.

But there are obviously loads of people out there who use, welcome and can understand it and fine if that's what they want or don't mind.

Oh and I hate it in text messages too - it takes longer sometimes to type in M8 than mate so why bother

"Dear Grandmother,

well i dont understand any of that shit i was talking about shortenig a few words as written above!

But thats exactly what you get sent through in messages and its supposed to impress??

No it's not meant to impress. It's meant to illicit a shag and to be honest I'd excuse Brad Cooper his text speak before I'd be impressed by Shane McGowan's written perfection ....

Point is ........... it's sex no more no less."

how the hell will that impress? yes it's all about sex but if someone can't string a few real words together then how are they going to get through the door?

I just got a message in text speak. I took one look at it and realised I would have to translate it to understand it. Deleted straight away. Spelling mistakes dont bother me. But translating text speak BORING.

"Unfortunately it seems to give the impression that the sender is either lazy, a chav or simply cant spell words normally...

Why is this?

"

Coz ppl r presumptuous

Um they will open their mouth and speak or do you want to have an essay supplied before you shag said person? Your logic only works if the text speak doesn't follow, that is, the sentence doesn't run together. Granny's example from her bit of stuff, Brad, (lol. Btw) shows this. Though it may be annoying trying to read it, it runs just fine and thus implies oor Brad would string a sentence together just fine should he use his voice and I suspect in real life that is what he would do
