Well I'm not sure what to call them. What I would like is a flood light type of light. A light which will light up the whole area when someone walks past.

Some of then look brilliant online and way to good to be true.

I did it mainly for my nephew, think I got slightly carried away but looks amazing I normally see the local cats sitting on the shed roof watching the lights at night and the birds seem to like them through the day

Solar is no good unless you have a good battery and a good charger,

They work well in summer when enough sun is out get near winter or overcast clouds and then you start charging them up just to keep the light going.

If you do go down leds lights consider having both solar and a 240v unit for overcast days and dark months.

The one I saw powers up with the sun and gives a good light when someone walks past it. I guess it doesn't work in the winter.

Yes all are, some colourful string lights edge of fence some hanging some wrapped around shrubs then candle lights

Yeah I can't afford to pay for any more electricity "

Me either plus all the wiring drilling holes just to add further cost only downside come winter cold snow can damage them when they start either leaking or going rusty so would recommend taking them down before winter then obviously place them differently given the yard a new look

I bought a cheap solar powered one, think it was a fiver from the pound shop. Just so I can find the cats in the dark. Works a treat! They set it off, so doesn't even need a big object moving.

Fiver from the pound shop that's cost of living for you these days. I bought one from machine mart and I think it would work well but my dogs keep setting it off and running the charge down.

Solar ones are pretty naff but you can get a decent 240v/20w led one online for a few quid which is equivalent to a traditional 200w halogen flood but far more efficient

The cheap ones don't last very long, I think you get what you pay for. The better ones have a box attached to the solar panel with rechargeable batteries in. If you swap them out for some good quality ones your light will last longer at night. Also, the ones with a separate wired-in solar panel are better - you can put the light where you need it and the panel in the best place for all day sunlight.

I love stargazing too, but I only really appreciate it on a cold frosty night when I can see more. I will settle in a quite dark corner for that when my lights are off.

Yeah I've had one with the batteries but it just come on for a short while and goes off.

Keep them pointing low, so that you don't disturb others, waste light coverage as well as add to light pollution in the sky.

As they're not on non-stop for hours, merely when activated by motion, you won't need many hours worth of light. I've used them in winter and had good results. But I'd evaluate and test before purchasing. A larger solar panel should aid in collection of sufficient light to charge the battery. Consider replacing the included batteries, which are often low quality.

Positioning is key, to allow collection of maximum light intensity and duration.
