Friday Night Nocturnal - Misty Manor edition

Ghouls & Gals, Goblins & Gents.

Welcome back to Misty Manor. Tonight the candelabras are glowing a tad lower, the velvet love seats are draped in furs. The cocktails are pink & fizzy. The fire is aglow. Even the dungeon is bedecked in romance (or at least I’ve polished the iron maiden).

Tonight is a gothic romance. I have traded my black lace in this evening and will be delicately wafting around in ivory silk.

I am channeling my inner Mina, Isabella, Rebecca & Cathy. Please join me for a tempestuous passion filled evening. It’s all heaving bosoms, crashing waves of lust, hypn0tic gazes & jealous ghosts of usurped princes.

Or alternatively come in put your feet up, have a drink & a flirt.

Oh and don’t stand by the suits of armour. Those helmets are really looking quite wobbly this evening….

Mrs Misty

At last!

That longed-for, scarcely-dreamed-possible opportunity to wear my New Romantic/Goth mashup costume. Velvet jacket, frilly open-necked white shirt, black mascara, Stendhalesque hair, and an air of dangerous, louche insouciance I picked up in Oxfam for a song (Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, since you ask).

Good evening, fellow adventurers in the Courts of the Evening. My courtesans and courtiers, courtly lovers and Courtney Lovers, geishas and gallants. My people.

Oh, I had no idea! Like the Knight Bus in Harry Potter?

"You didnt say what was in the attic

Well. No-one is sure. Every time I send a staff member to check, I’m down a staff member and up a ghost…."

That makes me want to go up more haha

"I think it was Miss Scarlett in the sex dungeon with the massive dildo….

This isn’t cluedo .

And anyway Miss Scarlett hasn’t been out of the bedroom all day (and neither has the massive dildo) so it can’t be…."

Sorry. Looks like I’m not “Cluedup” on this nocturnal business…

Used to be a night owl, never been an early bird and now more of a perpetually exhausted pigeon.

My gothic choices would be Dorian Gray, the 1931 film of Frankenstein, the illustrations of Gustave Doré, Bram Stoker's Dracula (the novel, not the film), Nosferatu, Pornography by The Cure, the essay On The Nature Of The Gothic by John Ruskin and the John Rylands Library in Manchester.

I think I’ll just say yes and save myself typing.

Dracula & Frankenstein have particular places in my heart.

"Good evening everyone. I had been planning on spending the evening at the Castle of Otranto but have decided to stop off here instead.

Oh!!! You are just delicious. Welcome welcome.

Please make yourself at home. I think a tour of my libraries are in order.

Why thank you! I do love a library - especially when guided around it by someone so enchanting.

I shall start with the classic, then we can move onto the allegedly cursed. Then there’s the erotica.

The final library I’m afraid is locked. There are legends of what lies behind it. If you press your ear to the door you can hear a kind of ticking…

What about the cursed erotica - tales so orgasmic that many have risked the Curse just for the experience?

Oh but when I see such an elaborately carved door, and hear a mysterious ticking, and hear the word 'forbidden' it makes me want to break out my lock-picking kit...

Ahhh. Yes those editions are in my room…. For… (cough) safe keeping.

Many have tried. Many have walked away with 5 less digits…"

Are you sure it's a ticking sound? Sounds more like a heartbeat to me - or is that my own heart thumping, whether through fear or the proximity of H i'm not sure. Be still my beating heart! Can't you hear it?

The John Rylands Library genuinely deserves the word awesome! Another gothic-ish love of mine is Edward Gorey. I drew a family portrait for a friend inspired by his style.

"Seeing as we're in such a gothic location, what are everyone's favourite gothic novels/films?

The Picture of Dorian Gray and most things by Edgar Allan Poe . Also, if you enjoy a gothic aesthetic, check out Christine McConnell on Instagram - she is incredibly talented and also stunning

Dorian Gray is wonderful. I've seen the Poe adaptations by Roger Corman starring Vincent Price - that's the low class version I do own a hardback of The Raven and other poems with illustrations by Gustave Doré, whose work I adore.

I may need to store you in my special “library” "

To be forever part of your special archive? I could be convinced.

I think it’s best if you come and sit down a while. I’ll get you a drink of something sweet & sticky.

Every time I walk past the Rylands I look up and expect to see the silhouette of Dracula in one of the windows...
