I swapped to Skype last year as I have always

Found it better. MSN I only used for one person and the video was a pain.

"Does this mean our hotmail accounts will be closed? "

Instead of Hotmail there is a new email service called Outlook, they were building a new email system from scratch rather than trying to fix hotmail. If you have a hotmail account you will login via the new Outlook service. Can't remember if they are getting rid of the hotmail email addresses though.

I used to use MSN in the old days when swingingheaven went down and we all switched to MSN till it came back up (you'd probably remember that Tony). I haven't fired it up in years now though, and I don't use Skype at all so it makes no difference to me.

little house on the praire

Well im not quite sure whats happened on mine, my email seems to have changed over to outlook and i do have skype installed. Ive had two conversatins on it but not sure how to type on it like msn.

I had a letter from a friend at christmas with her email addy in, i got round to messaging her yesterday and the email came up with the postfailure thing. I checked and checked id copied the right email down. Apart from her the only other emails ive sent was to people already in my list. I did reply to the one my sister sent yesterday went to send it and it said i needed to put the address in which i did. But everything is usually automatic when you reply.

So whether its beginners hiccups i dont know

I don't like skype just because I took an instant dislike to the UI

I also won't be swapping to skype just because "Microsoft's acquisition of Skype in October 2011 for £5.3bn"

I am seriously thinking of moving away from Microsoft altogether now as i'm also getting bored of Windows 7 and there is no way i'm trying windows 8 again as didn't like that either.

Linux Ubuntu here I come!

I think Hotmail and MSN are two different things, ones an email account and the other is the messenger, the email accounts are not changing i believe

Hotmail and other Microsoft sign-ons all come under the umbrella of a "Windows Live" account which you can use to log on to skype as well

As far as I know, though, hotmail is not being stopped

I scrapped MSN, Hotmail, Etc years ago.

My PC still uses XP as I don't like any of the upgrades. Have been using Outlook at work since the early 90's. I tend to use my iPhone on a daily basis for nearly everything.

As my family are spread around the world I have been using Skype for some time now with no problems.

When I first joined the computer age I was taken in with Microsoft and thought they were going to take over the planet. But that was I'm the late 80's and I have gradually phased them out over the years.

So no change for me

Lol.. I've buggered it we;;; and truly:

1. First attempt Skype required the existing hotmail email to login with... but it could not recognise the password, and the password recovery email always expires before you can reset on the Skype site (turns out its a Skype problem as there's loads of forum threads there that do the same).

2) Second attempt was easier to create a new skype id (nothing at all like the hotmail address) and (somehow) managed to get all my contacts from said hotmail.

3) Now to go back and fix the actual hotmail-migrate-to-skype-id with the buggered password: Awesome - I can now login! ... Except for the fact this now does not have my contacts migrated even though its the same skype id as my hotmail. Oh well!

... Just my experience if I had to blog about what happened some weeks back

Hotmail isn't going anywhere. But the outlook.com interface is *much* nicer than hotmail.com, I'd recommend people switch there. You keep your old address, you just get a better web site to access it with.

Now, for Skype, you can log into it with your same MSN account as before. Your old contacts will stay. The only difference, if you don't want to use Skype's phone features, is the app you use. And if you use an unofficial MSN app like Pidgin or Trillian, those will keep working until at least October, in theory.

They ought to support merging. Pretty sure when you sign in with your MSN account, it offers to let you merge the account to a Skype account.

The latest I hear from my industry contacts:

* Official MSN app will be killed off in March 2013, to move people to Skype (except in China)

* Third-party desktop apps, like Trillian or Pidgin, may cease to work in October 2013, depending on which MSN servers they connect to - the one they're meant to, or the one they're not. If they use the one they're not meant to, then see below

* Devices which embed MSN support, such as Windows Phone 7, should be fine until March 2014, when the final MSNP servers get turned off

Just a quick update!

Anyone with a Hotmail email address would have received an email from Microsoft with a link to download the new version of Skype (this has the messenger contacts migration module included).

Once you install/upgrade Skype, you log in with your actual Hotmail/Live messenger email address and follow the 2-4 clicks that automatically imports your contacts: all done in less than 1 minute!

Sweet - and I'm one of Microsoft's biggest critics

Yeah, I like camming but got tired of the cam not behaving itself on msn. Once msn has the cam I could not get it to work in Fabs chat - msn hogged it! lol.
