I had one back in the early 80s and I could see where all the cross border lorry drivers parked overnight from my window so had lots of interesting conversations.

Taxi drivers used them as well.

My range was limited because my ariel was just on the window sill but my mate 2 doors down got his mechanic dad to mount a car bonnet like a canopy on his bed and attached the ariel to that which gave him greater range.

I still have the radio but haven't used it in 40 years.
